Oh yes. Martial. The signing that Van Gaal "made for his successor."

I do remember him saying that.
LVG was so sure that Rooney was the guy who would score the most goals and Martial was a project which would bear fruit in a few years (for his successor).

Disappointing news about the director of football. I really think we need one.
Doesn't mean we won't have one. A day before the Cup Final the question may as well have been put to United: 'Is Van Gaal going to be manager next season and do you plan to look like twats if you lose the final?'.

For me the best part of this is club sources have denied the director of football rumour, yet no club sources have denied Van Gaal is going. There hasn't been a single word of support from the club despite all the stories. That gives me hope that after the weekend we'll finally be rid of Van Garbles.

Because it's what classy civilised people do?!

As mentioned above, given that the club has to pay his last year's contract, may as well get some value out of it. Just because his efforts did not work out does not mean he has nothing more to offer the club. Many have been asking for more footballing people 'upstairs' at the club - am sure LVG has plenty more to offer, especially on club organisation and youth development.
Like how the club did with Moyes! Or are you saying we have just turned civil this season?

Interesting that the club have been quick to come out and deny rumours about appointing a director of football yet have kept quite on anything involving Jose Mourinho.

Perhaps but if he's well thought of within our club then that must mean behind the scenes he's better than we thought and we know that he gets on with Mounrinho. If he stays within his boundarys that's the sort of DOF we need.
That's the thing though, we can't be sure that he will. By all accounts, he had a good relationship with Koemann before he undermined him at Ajax.

Shame that we aren't getting a director. I think we need one enormously.

However, it's a very valid point that the club has not denied van gaal/mourinho rumours.

Wow, it's amazing how sure everyone seems, that LVG is going anywhere.wish I could have some of that optimism!

We clearly need someone with clout and respect who can run a modern transfers operation. It's not LvG though. Nor is Jose very good at working with a DoF as he blames them for the wrong players as soon as things go wrong.

Director of Football !!
Just what does one do ?

"Director of football" is a term describing a senior management figure at a football club, most commonly used in Europe. The exact nature of the role is often unclear and extremely variable and causes much debate in the sports media.

Typically, they pick the players to sign and sometimes sell. The idea is that the manager focus entirely on the team itself and make the best with what he's given (by the DOF). I'm not a fan myself. I believe a manager should have the say on which player he wants to work with but then few managers are like SAF who thrived in the DOF-less environment and I may just be spoilt by SAF.

I don't mind hiring a director of football for now, but after we have cleansed ourselves of LvG, then I would like someone to be appointed.

United have said no DoF job, but again fail to confirm he will manage United next season.

Maybe we need a transfer committee comprising of members from the Redcafe?
Pretty sure they already do. Every recent player signed has had a thread on Redcafe, apart from Rojo. We didn't agree on that 1, poor form.

Wasn't there talk of United getting the bloke in from Alt Madrid to be the DoF to work alongside Jose? Or was that twitter trash talk?
