My biggest gripe with this so called possession team is how we fail to keep possession when under any kind of pressure. This game kind of reminded of the Wolfsburg game, and actually many others, where we failed to keep the ball and blunt the opposition when we needed it the most. West Ham were able to pressure us into losing possession and attack us almost at will, while we failed to get into their box.
We had a good thing going for a month last season when we were maintaining dominant possession, transitioning from defense to attack in lightning quick speed, players making runs off the ball and actually looked good enough to be sitting out a world class player like Di Maria. I had a ton of positive expectations from seeing LvG's philosophy actually translating into something good on the pitch.
It still beats me why we completely shunned that personnel and formation and started this season with two holding midfielders, Blind in defense and that utter nonce Memphis on the wing. Like he worked all season cycling through formations until he struck gold and abandoned it as soon as he faced the first sign of trouble instead of buying and building upon it and we haven't been the same since.
