He's been in the press today, saying he's in danger if he doesn't make top four. Still seems completely convinced that top 4 is the only target he has to worry about.

My thoughts haven't changed, top four and he's finishing his contract here. A near miss and it'll be touch and go if there are other options still.
Didn't he say something like "as a Manchester United manager you have to win a trophie/trophie's"?

So those of us who want a change find themselves in the horrible position of a) wanting van Gaal/United to fail, and b) even then, hoping that he can't talk his way out of being fired. Ridiculous.

Yep. A ridiculous situation. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Finish outside the top 4 and we get rid of him but have no CL football next season.

Finish in the top 4 and keep this fraud, but probably get eliminated from the CL at the first hurdle again.

Even if he wins the FA cup and finishes top 4 he will be gone since Mourinho is lined up i'm sure of that.

Y'all can relax and support the team.

It's plausible that the board have told him to get top four to keep his motivation going, but behind closed doors know he is gone regardless. It's the same approach we are taking with the players. Pointless lowering targets even if he is going.

Do people really think he'll be here next season if we get CL football?

Not only he will stay, but he will be extended if he does well in preseason and during the first months of the season.

He definitely will be

Yes, despite all the widespread Mourinho talk.

Based on what? Gut feeling? Fear?

I've seen nothing from the club to suggest that this season has been considered acceptable, nor that Top 4 is considered an important enough target to save him.

Last season it was the aim, sure, but after that he was expected to build on it and he simply has not.

He's a dead man walking. I'm not even sure there's a question as to who is replacing him anymore. Mourinho will be our manager next season.

We won't get top 4 though. Beat City just to slip on some shit team in a match or two, been his speciality so yeah. 4th or not the clown should be out.

I've bored people all season long with my pet theory about United: we're a PR-first club now, but the PR is dedicated to commercial interests & not so much the 'Public' part. As such, the fans' opinions matter little, so I can well imagine Louis convincing Ed that it really is a process & so keep his job...even if we win nothing and come 5th.

If he does both, he'll get an extension
We are not suddenly going to cut ties with Mourinho after months of negotiations which i think we can safely say have happened between United and Jose/Mendes. Not only we would be very unprofessional but also stupid for actually not changing LvG for Mourinho. The board will not forget all those pathetic months this season just because we possibly rob a pisspoor City for 4th position.

Exactly. Van Gaal is putting fans in a horrible position here. Most want him gone, so if he dangles the idea of him staying if we finish in the top four, it pushes people into turning against the team. He should just keep fecking quiet.

Hope you're right mate. That Dutch fecker seems awfully confident though.

I just don't think theres anything about Van Gaal that can save him though. Even if that was true, then Van Gaal is such a disaster from a PR point of view that they won't keep him on.

Assuming that you're correct then logically they'd cart him out for Giggs and peddle the romantic notion that the club is different, or appoint someone that won't play shit on a stick football.

There's no benefit from keeping Van Gaal, even from a PR point of view. Especially when our biggest sponsor has complained about the football this season.

LvG said himself that the United board would review the season and LvG performance. Its safe to say that this season has not been up to our standards. But to announce Mourinho now would not play out good for anyone but the fans. We need our players to have focus and not thinking about next season under José Mourinho.

Just logic

The two candidates to take over are both ready to take over now and have been for about 6 months.

If LvG couldn't save his season, he'd have gone months ago. He wouldn't be here now if he had no way of keeping his job. The fact he is still here shows he still has time to save his job.

Well unless you know something I don't, I don't think anything is done with Mourinho.

Regardless of how we did it, getting 4th and CL keeps sponsors etc happy. LvG would then stay imo

I think he's gone personally, but until it's official there will always be that niggling feeling that he'll stay. The end of the season can't come soon enough for me.

I dont think anything is lined up with him , I think it is all paper talk.
Sticking my neck out and saying no matter how the season ends, LVG will be the manager next season and see out his contract.

I think he can 'save' the season, without saving his job.

Rightly or wrongly this club believes that stability breeds success, and that theres no reason to assume that changing managers mid-season necessarily would save the season.

More importantly, and the decisive factor imo why we didn't change, is appointing a new manager post-season gives them a clean break from this one. If they came in mid-season and were unable to save it, they'd be tarred with that failure before they even really started. Appointing in the summer gives us the chance for a clean break and a chance for a new manager to start with a clean slate.

At least, I think that is a far more logical conclusion to draw than the idea that the club think whats happened this season has been acceptable. Because it has not been, and we all know that.

Anyway, we know what'll happen even if Mangle buggers off and José comes here - two seasons in after winning the title, he'll be lobbing his medal at the crowd & saying that 'my heart belongs to Madrid' before he f*cks off to Real with Martial tucked under his coat.

4th is not a goal of united's it's a goal of LVG. that in itself should be grounds for dismissal. lack of cohesion and vision.

I think Jose is a certainty too

But as some may know I am dead against him

If for some reason he doesn't it will be such a great moment mainly because I can't stand him, but secondly the fallout on here will be spectacular

Yea it will be even more glorious to watch our club fade into obscurity as well. Can't wait.

I'm convinced he's leaving at the end of this Season regardless of what happens and where we finish.

The club won't be that stupid surely

4th or not, he will be gone.

It's easy enough to say that but there is a chance he will stay if he gets top 4, United are a money making machine where profit comes first, if top 4 is achieved then the CL money rolls in, sponsors are in the main happy (or clauses will have been met), there would also be the need to pay LvG off, which there likely wouldn't be if we miss top 4, and there is no need to throw loads of money at a manager like Mourinho, so the bottom line is the Glazer's are happy.

I'm only expressing my opinion but finishing top 4 might well save him.

SAF may definitely save him but everyone has a breaking point.

Didn't he say something like "as a Manchester United manager you have to win a trophie/trophie's"?

A few months ago, he stated that we need to lower our standards/expectations. So now, I guess 4th place is good enough for MUFC.
He also previously said that he can see us winning the EL. (Remember that?) That went out of the window.

He basically sets himself a target.
Fails.
Then resets a new/lower target.
And fails.

After a few weeks, no doubt, the new target will be top 7 and if he achieves that, he will state that he has done a fantastic job.

EDIT: For those fans who are now believing that we can finish in 4th - I am not sure if you have been watching our matches. I'll summarise our current form: in our last 5 games, we have won 1 game. We are currently in 6th. We were in 1st a few months back. Let that sink in, before you start believing LVG's delusion.

SAF won't be saving him.
Even in a senile state, 6th place is something SAF cannot possibly say is acceptable.
When SAF was manager, if he finished in 6th, he'd probably sack himself!

Feckin hell, mate... when we ended season on 2nd, on the same point level with City in 2012 Fergie gave warning to everyone and was ready to dump players.

I'm perplexed what we've done with such power and legacy now. It's like giving a nuclear briefcase to a 10 year old, you just know disaster awaits around the corner.

Hope you're right mate. That Dutch fecker seems awfully confident though.

He was confident of making it past the group stages of CL.
He was confident of fighting for the title.
He was confident of winning the EL.
He is now confident of top 4.
Failing each target and then revising a new/lower one.

He is a proven charlatan and if he had any dignity, he'd have resigned in January, after one of the worst month (December) of football, in the club's recent history.
He'll be gone in the Summer. I am 99.5% sure of this.

It was more in response to the guy claiming he'll stay if top 4 is secured. I don't think he will and that decision has been made.
It's like some are trying hard to convince themselves he'll be here regardless so they wont get disappointed.
Oh and agree on your last point; we wont get top 4 simple as that.
