Van gaal said that the goal was always first not fourth.

Then he says something like hows the kids are a level below arsenal.

I saw from the start that this is not a title winning team but more a squad building team. As shit as we played, we were there aslong as we didn't take injuries. Now that we have injuries people wanted him gone due to the previous expectations.

LVG still thought we could still challenge for the league before the Chelsea game. I think he knows the expectations.

"Play the youth in an extreme injury crisis" isn't a target unfortunately.

I'm giddy because I am a united fan and more than one who supports over trophie spells. Your ungiddy because what's predominantly you been saying for a season has been not shown tonight and what I have said has been shown.

Just like Arsenal beaten by little kids - it's quite a big deal winning when your consistently told your wrong.

Whatever.

You're funny I'll give you that., and I'm not 'ungiddy' in the slightest, far from it.

keep up the good work you are one of my favourite posters.

Look, what you or I see as expectations isn't what LVG, the club and most fans expect, you are projecting your views into United's and you are wrong. The club and LVG expected a lot more than that, iirc the club projected a top 3 finish.

I still want him gone. Unless there's some remarkable turn around in form from now to end of the season, we won't be making the Champions League next year (either by top 4 or winning the Europa League) which is not good enough. Considering the money spent I feel like van Gaal did the minimum to keep his job last year and we've gone backwards this season.

You got kids beating arsenal and we have gone backwards. Anyway, just glad he didn't go in December when every tome dick and Harry wanted him gone. Some positives can definitely be seen.

Why in Gods name do people still argue with KinderBueno the lunatic

It passes the time, he's becoming a legend.

I wonder what ever happened to that other poster from last year that had his name changed to Solidshite, he was a bit of fun too.

Nothing's changed, hopefully we can finish strongly and sneak a top 4 spot to hand the reins over to Mourinho in the best possible way in June, then win the FA Cup as it's been too long and LvG can leave on a high note.

Unless we get qualify for Champions League football by May we will have gone backwards and van Gaal would deserve to be sacked. You think that next season if Arsenal are in the premier European competition and we're flying off to Azerbaijan or wherever to play some no marks in the Europa League they'll care about today?

Look, no one's saying that a result like today isn't fantastic and I'm as happy as you are that players like Rashford have stepped up and delivered on the big stage, but over the course of the season we've had a lot of poor results. We were beaten at home by 'Boro in the League Cup and crashed out of a favourable Champions League group. Top 4 is still very much an outside chance in the league when we should have kicked on and made a title challenge. We'll see about the FA Cup and Europa because so far we've played lower league/poor opposition and there's much tougher tests to come.

Won't matter a bit to Beano and his ilk. If we lose horribly to Liverpool in the Europa, this is to be expected, because kids are by their very nature not reliable. And that is a valid excuse - nay, it's not even an excuse, it's a proper explanation.

As a full blown Gaalist you really can't lose - it's a much safer occupation than the one currently held by their idol.

You are right. As I say I expect United to be wonderfully successful after Van Gail's time is up. The only way the likes of me will fail is if United fail.

If Jose comes in, is it likely that our youth players wont be getting a sniff again? Hopefully if the club do bring Jose in, they tell him that they expect the youth to be given their chances. We cant be having him come in and put the brakes on THIS! What do you all think will happen in terms of youth if he arrives? Sorry if this has already been asked here recently.

Why are you even contemplating us losing to Liverpool? By all accounts our injury problems are starting to wain, a couple of players have had needed rests. Based on what we have seen over the last few weeks, the kids may even be a better option than the experienced players. I am pretty confident of beating Liverpool in Europa, and WHU in the FA Cup.

I for one do not understand why the posters who constantly bash LVG always look for a negative. At least those of us who have been Rooney bashers can acknowledge when he turns it on and give credit, but it seems the LVG bashers can't even enjoy wins.

I think the club will have briefed him about the youth tradition. I feel sure players like Rashford and CBJ will be part of the squad.
We must be careful not to burn out these lads btw.

I think you'll beat us too. Van Gaal's record against us and the fact that you have better players than us makes me think Van Gaal will get another one over on us.

He does deserve credit for today. The easy option for a game like that against Arsenal would be to shift Depay over to striker and play someone like Januzaj on the wing but he has belief in those young players and that belief has paid off in the last two games. I've got a lot of appreciation for what he's doing for English football. He's showing other clubs that there are good players in our youth set ups and they need to be given the chance to prove they have what it takes.

How do I like your post btw? I can't believe I have heard it from a Liverpool supporter over a united one. He does bring alot of change with him and this is going to sound so wrong to alot of people but he has made the english clubs think more intelligently. It might not work but I have seen things in the last 2 seasons that i hadn't seen alot before. The utilising of youth, the use of different formations like 352, the way he incooperates different ideas and so on. He isn't perfect by any means but he is different and for a top club to be different & successful can be dangerous. People still trying to figure out ways to beat the different clubs like Barcelona & Bayern whilst teams like Real & Arsenal get easier every year.

I think he will influence alot of our youth and the league and English football will eventually reap it's benefits hopefully on the international stage.

I don't know if he's right for United beyond this season but like you say, he's done a lot of good as far as the youth set up goes. Someone like Rashford could go on to be a future international for England and score a tonne of goals at club level, and he's come from United's academy. I see Liverpool throw so much money at over rated £20-£30 million players and it gets us no where. I'd love us to bring through a couple of players to come in and do it in a big game like Rashford did today. I don't think there's a better feeling seeing a player score than when it's one of your own.

Even if United's season ends in disappointment, he deserves credit for showing this country that the future isn't all doom and gloom as far as our young talent goes. There's a lot of potential out there and it doesn't have to include a £40 million price tag.

We have Watford and WBA next right? Those are the games that have been a problem. (losing points to the likes Bournemouth, Newcastle, Norwich, Sunderland). Its a whole case of what ifs.

We should be getting 6 points but it wouldnt surprise me if we dont.

Maybe I should start doubting the "senior" players instead of Van Gaal. Are youngsters more suited to LVG "philosophy" like the Ajax team?

*Sigh*

Context. It's like location to a real estate agent.

I was commenting on a specific point raised. I personally don't actually think we'll lose against Liverpool. But IF we lose against Liverpool, LVG's supporters will not recognize this as a valid criticism of LVG and his methods - because the narrative has already been written: If we lose or struggle or appear disjointed, that's because we're rebuilding - because we have an inexperienced team who are bound to be unpredictable, etc. If we win or look impressive, this is because LVG's philosophy is bearing fruit. The bets are nicely hedged.

If you think I'm constantly bashing LVG, you're barking up the wrong tree. I'm constantly bashing a set of zealots - not LVG himself. There's a difference.

Good! You're being upfront about it - that's good.

There will be plenty of debates about this, I'm sure, if we hire someone else after the season, and jump up a level or two in terms of performances and/or results.

The problem is, people have been saying this since january 1st. 'no credit for this, x team is awful'.

Mid week is was 'yes we hammered both but shrews and midy are shit, lets see how he does against arsenal' and now that we were brilliant against arsenal it's 'arsenal are shit lets see if he can win every game for the rest of the season'

I find it sad how people want to be right more than they want to see us play well

You are right. The damage has been done in December and January, there is no denying this. But LVG deserves credit for dealing with injuries and getting results in the last 3 games.

After every good result I have new hope that we finally start playing well and win our games. Only to be dissappointed after the next game

This is exactly how I feel. Results like yesterday should be the spring board to a run of wins to give us a real lift ending the season. However I just can't help but feel Watford will come and turn us over. It's an incredibly frustrating inconsistency. Having said that, there's no one in football I despise more than Wenger so today LvG is my biggest hero.

Absolutely fantastic! Not another manager would be so capable of turning this around!! So I'm so glad I have Mr. Wenger in charge.

Hopefully the mistakes are minor and the positives are just as spread across. Positives ans negatives should be spread apart as to there being no mistakes inbetween.

Let inbetweeners go.. & judge the ones from yesterday as the highest problem to the public..

He needs to see out the season and then we can evaluate.

Performances have for the most part been significantly better this year, Sunderland and Midtjylland away aside. We're playing with a quicker tempo, taking more risks and it just feels like watching Manchester United again. The players are clearly on board if you look at how hard they have been working in recent matches. Mata and Herrera practically ran themselves into the ground yesterday chasing down every ball and putting in tackles.

To me, this feels more like the start of something better rather than a false dawn.

I personally don't think we've been playing the "Philosophy" over the last few games. It's been a different brand of football to what we have witnessed over the last 18 Months. Maybe LvG has finally realised (wishful thinking) his previous methods were not working.

The young players have been the highlight of the last two years. I posted on the Memphis Depay/ Player Thread that I had a feeling we would do ok against Arsenal, and I'm pleased we turned them over. It's great to see some young players getting critical experience, young players going Euro 2016 etc. This is all great.

But I wouldn't hesitate to move LVG on. He's taken us backward and he has introduced absolutely NO consistency to our play, or our transfer dealings. Yesterday was fun as we didn't have anything to lose, BUT that isn't how you manage a big, competitive club who are looking to win things. We shouldn't be approaching games without a clue to how we may perform. The youngsters are just having a 'go and that will be great to see the season out. But they are kids.

Arsenal were woeful, absolutely toothless and I haven't a clue what is going on there.

I agree. That was the argument i was having here yesterday. Some posters say that recent performance are exactly what philosophy is. :wenger:

Whether it's due to him or the players, if we carry on our form and translate it into good performances against decent opposition (Arsenal were anything but yesterday) then he should stay for the sake of momentum.

Come the summer though he should be gone. His past methods haven't worked and how anyone can have confidence in him is beyond me. A few good games against poor opposition and a forced selection of players shouldn't change that.

Must be bittersweet emotions for you that LVG inspired the feel good atmosphere to return to Old Trafford this week! :p

Im really happy about the win yesterday, especially the fact that it was served up by kids, which gives us plenty of reason to be optimistic in the longer term. But I dont want to get ahead of myself as far as how much momentum we will build up from here goes. There have been enough false dawns in the last 2 seasons for me to have the feeling this is not the sun rising, this is someone messing about with the light switch.

I'm definitely not taking this win for granted but it was a very nice performance indeed. For LVG, he and his players needs to prove a longer term of consistency, perhaps a longer period of win streak or at least playing the type of football we performed yesterday, in order to stay here for a third season. We've experienced over and over again how we had our hopes up when we string together 2-3 wins but falling back on earth for the next 4-5 with his dull approach. Yesterday's win was, for me, rather unexpected but it does show a glimpse of LVG's philosophy having an effect not only in the first team, but also with the younger players.
