I want LVG out as much as the next person but to be angry at him because we only beat Shrewsbury is ridiculous. He couldn't ask for Barcelona to be drafted in as last-minute replacement opponent.

Well LvG has surely earned a 4 yr extension to his contract. The style in in which his side slayed the mighty Shrews was unbelievable!

Get it sorted Woody, before Arsenal come to town!

The only think we have to look forward to is the end of LVG time as manager. He will eventually leave. If not this season, definitely by next season. I'm passed getting angry at this point because Ed has shown he will not sack LVG despite our poor results since December. Hopefully Giggs is not appointed manager. I fear if he is, were going to be forced to stick with a few years of mediocrity due to our history and how Fergie turned it around.

Oh VG is gone at the end of the season no question, no way will he survive the summer, he is too old and just another dinosaur in football management that cannot be kept on. The question is? who would want to even consider renewing their season ticket? with this clown in charge if he is here next season. Because yes support your team through thick and thin, but when the club is doing a bad job running this business and they can see this clown is just so bad, but they keep him on because A - they are too tight to sack him because they fecked up the contract and giving him millions if he is sacked, and B - the money keeps falling off their magic tree so they can afford to make bad decisions, that for me is bad management, and why would any supporter want to even want to help keep finance this club? who keep making bad decisions, but the money bails them out.

Its time the supporters stop this club's arrogant mentality and give them a wake up call, they are saying if they keep VG, we can keep a bad manager on and he can do a bad job, because the money keeps rolling in. This board needs to be held accountable for our situation, and if that means supporters stopped buying season tickets its a start of showing guys like woodward keep this up, the money stops rolling in. Corporations that are well run, do not allow failure of the product they are supposed to be selling. Saying that Microsoft kept making money off the red ring of death on the Xbox 360, seems we have our own the red ring of death in woodward who keeps appointing bad managers and keeping them on. It is up to everyone else what they want to do, I would not give a penny to this regime until we see change in this club's behavior to how they handle these situations

That sandbagging from Carrick pre match looks awful stupid now. We're Manchester United, we should never be calling Shrewsbury Town a really tough away game, no matter what clown we have managing us. Can't stand that lowering of our expectations by players like that

On here?! We could have every player sit down on the pitch and refuse to play and someone would find an excuse to blame Van Gaal for it.

My guess is that you're implying that the "LvG out" proponents are blaming him for things out of his control, I have a slightly different take on it. If the players sit down on the pitch and refuse to play, it's still something that is in the manager's control. His remit includes motivating the squad, selecting the right players (the ones who are mentally as well as physically fit) and then getting them playing in the right system etc. So yes, if they sat down and refused to play, you could question why the heck they're on the pitch in the first place...

Extreme? Yep. Taking an analogy to a ridiculous extreme? Yep. But the fact is that in all jobs (including management consulting), the manager is the one that is ultimately accountable for outcomes. Fail to achieve and the manager must take the blame... Here, it's his team, he selected, bought and picked the matchday squad as well as the starting 11 and the subs. Surely he then has to take the blame for how things pan out?

In this game, I belong to the "only Shrewsbury" camp. I said after the win against Stoke that it meant nothing and so it transpired. Similar here. Crap opposition, so the result really is just papering over the very large cracks...

We should expect our players to blow them away at any given day. Everything else would be a joke. We won 3-0 but I didnt give a good rating. We didnt play that well considering the opponent

He will not be sacked before the end of the season. Get used to it.

I am more worried about how the board are planning for the future. Its not looking good behind the scenes is it?

I can honestly see him staying in charge next season, and the thought of that makes me feel sick.

They played as well as they had to. In the process picking up maybe three more injuries, Now they have three games in a week. Midgetland, Arsenal and Watford next week. Eventually some people are going to have to take the injuries into account. No team can deal with that without something suffering.

I haven't watched our last three matches, despite having enough time to spare. Our whole situation is so bloody dispiriting that I can't summon any enthusiasm, and I can't be alone in this.

I can't shake the feeling that LvG will still be here next season if he gets a few decent results.

While it's ridiculous to suggest you'd want United to lose, when he wins I can't find my smile so much. Knowing that it adds to the possibility that LvG will stay. It's dire. Even if he won every game until May, I'd fully expect him to do rubbish again next season.

actually thought we played quite well last night. most teams would have looked similar to us against a lower league side intent on sitting back

I think people expected us to blitz them and score tons of goals. That rarely happens in these games. They did what they had to, had the game completely under control. It wasn't that we didn't have chances, more to do with bad finishing. We had 26 chances,. What people should be asking is why we only got 6 on target. This was the right game to pass, pass, because it did wear them out. Just a pity there are even more injuries. We might get through on Thursday, but Sunday might be too much, the players will try their best, but these injuries will take their toll eventually. Are the injuries bad luck, bad training methods, bad warming up, bad management of playing time or are they just a bunch of crocks? Who knows.

Also we played the last 15 minutes with 10 men.

Yeah, just looking at the match in isolation it wasn't bad at all: Standard cup fare against a lowly opponent.

Trouble is, of course, that it's very hard to regard anything in isolation at the moment.

I am not asking him to be sacked because we played Shrewsbury.
I am asking that he be sacked because our league form is akin to a team in the relegation zone.
That we got knocked out easily, from an easy CL group.
That we got knocked out of the League Cup.
That we seem to be getting beaten by Midgetland.
That we lost to Middlesborough, Norwich, Bournemouth, Sunderland (and some other minnows).
That we struggle to score goals unless the opposition is really really bad.
That our target is now to aspire to finish in 4th pace. 5th place is now acceptable (so it seems). I realise that some of you feel that 5th place is perfectly acceptable. But IMO, it isn't.
That our results have been similar to Swansea (and Swansea sacked their manager, as a result, yet we keep hold of our manager).

As the season wears on, I'm sure, he'll get worse.

We're becoming Arsenal, not Liverpool. I admire Wenger but he's done this for years: been under intense pressure with calls for his sacking; pulls out a win to briefly halt the criticism; then (like LVG) gets an unexpectedly fine result against a good team and the board lets him carry on and on, being happy with the revenues...

At the exception that they play good football, they qualify for the CL and they manage to go past the group stage of the CL. In reality we are now the new Manchester Utd, boring and nonperforming.

You've ruined my theory now, JP.

We becoming the old United just after busby retired, a huge club underachieving, waisting a bucket load of cash, with board members making terrible decisions influenced by their need to be different from everyone else

So we're becoming the new old new old United? :D

I can't disagree with you on this point, but I don't think it is fair of some to criticise him for only beating Shrewsbury. That was the team we were playing. There are plenty of things to be critical of. People have got to the stage where they are criticising for the sake of it and it is a nasty habit to get into. If the so called star names they want brought in don't live up to their expectations it will be the same next season. Some think all our players are rubbish. They aren't. Lacking confidence, confused at times, overplayed due to a lengthening injury list, inexperienced maybe. Rubbish no they aren't. Do I want LvG out, of course I do. I will criticise when it is due, not when it isn't. The ones who deserve the most criticism are the board for letting it get to this situation.

To me it's simpler than that, in Football you don't always play beautifully, even on form we could have performed the same way. And in general I don't criticize or praise a manager for a game, I prefer to look at patterns and lengthy periods of form.

If he won every single game, until May, I'd be ecstatic.
We may even have a shot of at the title and winning all the trophies available.
I'll take that.

Minus the relegation

Yeah, and there's a point of sorts, if we're talking grand historical lines and parallels: Back then, in the mid 70s, it was possible for a club like United to – actually – get back on track, back to winning ways, by taking the long detour via relegation: The year spent in the old second division was in many ways invigorating for the club and its fanbase.

Today, none of that is possible. The constant pressure of having to qualify for CL football has completely changed the dynamics of the whole thing. And missing out on 4th (as it stands now – could become even worse) isn't the modern-day equivalent of getting relegated either: It cannot serve that same reinvigoration purpose.

You're missing out on some great entertainment, Steve. I'll admit I have missed a few games this season, but I still watch whenever I can, surprised you're skipping games.

I don't look forward to the games and it doesn't bring my much joy when we win, and most of the time, it doesn't upset me that much when we lose.

It's slightly different for me, mate, as I believe that massive changes are needed (particularly in the first team); so our recent games are inevitably frustrating from my POV. I'm often wrong/naive about football matters though.

I agree with this. I don't think we have any real intention of sacking him at this point. He's tight with Woodward and we seem to have switched focus to 'contending for top 4', which, even if he fails, we have contended for at least. I think he'd have to lose a consistent string of games in a row in order to force their hand, and he generally scrapes a win or draw every now and then to save himself.

I think that we'll write off this season, give him funds to spend (nowhere near what we've spent before though) and let him see out his contract with the misguided idea that Giggs will be 'ready' by the time he's finished. Woodward seem to see LVG's future as being tied directly to his own, so he's extremely reluctant to change and I don't think they want Mourinho here at all.

Of course, this is all doom and gloom and I'll admit, I'm something of a pessimist, but there's been no real rumblings from the club at all, like we're completely satisfied with what is happening and I've not seen anything to suggest otherwise. Van Gaal seems unconcerned about ever being fired too. He's clearly being regularly reassured.

That't not being naive, I want LvG gone but there are deeper issues. FWIW, it frustrates me too but I can't help not watch. I'm hopeful that things will change next season, new manager and new players. Makes things easier.

If he wins the Europa he probably stays because they'll say "he achieved our target of champions league football" as that is the ambition at board level now. If he adds the F.A. cup as well he definately stays as "This is a cup United haven't won in 12 years. The Europa is a cup United have never lifted. I came to the club to win titles and now I have made history. This is a process and we are on course. Next season we shall make an assault on the title etc etc."

Don't worry, there is more chance of Liverpool winning the Premier league than us winning the Europa League
