To be fair, their main problem wasn't being QB-less - so much as the Glazer family's lack of sporting knowledge and acumen to monitor the direction in which the franchise was headed. I mean yes, GMs make the moves, but you gotta observe how they're performing instead of giving them the carte blanche to do whatever the hell they want - that right should only be reserved for personnel managers who have proven themselves to be successful at their job. They thought trading 2 First Round Picks and 2 Second Round picks for Gruden was a good idea, I mean fair enough - in the short term, they won a SuperBowl, but that handicapped him once the defense declined. Then, they didn't put quality GMs + scouts or coaches in place. Passing on Rodgers (worked him out with Jerry Rice) for Cadillac Williams, drafting for needs - Gaines Adams in a class with Peterson, Revis, Willis, Lynch; appointing their DB coach as the HC, appointing a coach from Rutgers as the HC, appointing a rubbish GM in Dominik, bringing in players with character issues and not monitoring them properly, then proceeding to let players walk just because the GM was more stringent with character issues - ref. Bennett, Blount, Talib; restricting free agent spending in the mid to late 2000s, blackouts due to fan disenchantment. The troubles ran very, very deep - and a lot of it was down to poor leadership/ perception on their part. A hands off approach works best only when you put the proper infrastructure in - something they failed to do for about a decade - and you're kind of seeing shades of that with United too.
