I don't know how anyone would be confident we will get 4th looking at United over the last month or so. I'm not saying we won't. But it's hard to be confident.

I thought it was a shoe in before today.

I think we could cope with how we were playing and get there, but add in the usual Christmas time injury crisis, and I'm not so sure now

I don't buy in to the Giggs love in as manager. Plus he is seemingly off to Swansea.

If Giggs had any balls he'd march up to Ed's office and say "feck this BS and give me a chance for the next 6 months and you can get Pep this". Seriously worried we not even gonna get 4th.

The only option to replace him should be Carlo. In terms of immediate I mean.

Not Giggs. No way.

Every managerial appointment is a risk. We could wait till the summer, get Pep and he might fail as well.

I dont think most in here didnt expect this when LVG was appointed. But here we are. At this point, him staying on would do more damage to the squad.

The season is still salvageable.
The only alternative for the rest of the season is Giggs. People saying bring in Ancelotti have to realise that can't happen until the summer when we'd be better off targeting Guardiola anyway. Which leaves Giggs till the end of the season, I'm not saying Giggs is a car crash waiting to happen and Van Gaal would do better I just think we need to realise the alternative is a gamble.

29 points after 16 games would have had us in 6th place during Moyes' season.

Can anything be extrapolated from that? Probably not.

I do feel we're on course for that kind of season, though.

Giggs can go to Swansea. I don't want him managing the club at any price. The amount of flak being thrown at Van Gaal by ex-players and the media is incredible. Someone at United is doing some serious shit-stirring behind the scenes.

I'm only interested in the results. And he has failed us. His handling of players..in and out. Substitutions...crazy.

the current players are obviously talking to their former mates.

Just calling it like I see it. Would likely have been top today if not for extreme injury issues. Te board, as rational beings, likely understand that.

Will need to address this thin squad sooner rather than later. Can't get away with it in this league, hopefully he is learning this after the second season of madness

But again, the injuries yes are a massive problem but who's fault is it to shed the squad so much?

Wouldn't fire him now. I'd stick with him, get 4th at worst, and replace him in the summer with Pep.

That's the sensible long term option. I hope we're putting out feelers now.
It'd be madness to keep him on for the last year unless something amazing happens second half of the season. But we have to be a bit cleverer than we were when Fergie went!

Won't be as easy as that by the looks of things, City and Arsenal are nailed on top 4, Chelsea are obviously gone but Spurs and Liverpool could easily give us a hard time of it, expect Leicester to fade away though still so not including them.

The stress of getting top 4 last season almost finished me off so not going there again this season, if we fall out of it then so be it.

Unless the club are bluffing then Pep seems a bit of pipe dream, would be quite happy with Carlo though, reckon he's made for the club.
All that stress and we got knocked out in the group stages haha

29 points after 16 games would have had us in 6th place during Moyes' season.

We're pretty fortunate to have the other top teams stumble quite a bit. How we're only 3 points off the top I have no idea.

Moyes had 25 points at this point in 2013/14 too.

There are mitigating circumstances (mainly the defensive injuries) but this is starting to feel like the beginning of the end. I now half expect us to lose or at best scrape a draw, just like with Moyes after Christmas in 13-14. Relative to our resources, this is woeful underachievement. He stabilised us but is starting to seem desperately limited compared to some of the younger managers out there. I originally voted to wait and see until the end of the season but now couldn't care if he is sacked next week. In fact I do not think we can get top 4 if he stays in charge - it is incredibly hard to reverse momentum once things start to go wrong.

Mark my words. Despite the shit on a stick football and his weird subs he'll probably squeeze enough points to get top 4. Surely Leicester will fade away while Chelsea has too big of a gap to catch up. That leaves Spurs and Liverpool as genuine top 4 contenders as Arsenal and City have it wrapped up anyway. I cannot see both Liverpool and Spurs taking over United in top 4.

Wouldn't fire him now. I'd stick with him, get 4th at worst, and replace him in the summer with Pep.

I was of that opinion too but honestly I'm struggling to see how he will get us top four like this... He is lucky there isn't a Klopp waiting to be hired. It's a tough one for the board IF we have two options i.e. getting Ancelotti now or Pep in the summer.. Ofcourse its possible Pep isn't coming in the summer and wants City.

However I personally would just get Carlo if he wants to come. He can be around for a decade and more importantly, can get us top 4 this season and have a platform to build with. It's going to be tough if we are out of top four because you better believe the other teams will be strengthening significantly. I also feel the EPL teams will start dominating CL (atleast 3-4 teams reaching quarters with maybe 2 in the Semis) and if we lose out on top 4 this year, that could hold us back by 2-3 years

Does anyone think SAF would be willing to come back as an interim manager until the end of the season?

Of course he could. He has no managerial experience. It's not like 4th or 5th is the worst we can be. We could end up 7th or 8th. I just have no faith in Giggs. I'd rather go with the guy who has lead big teams and won big things.

There's no real difference in 5th or 7th/8th. LVG has lead big teams and won big things a while ago. He's not inspiring any confidence in me. I'll give you that anyway. Giggs could bring us to 7th or 8th. But looking at the way we're playing now, so could LVG. It's so hard to watch us. His decisions are baffling at times. I think Giggs would try simplify things. And that's what we need right now. Give players a job and let thm go do it and stick to it. I could be wrong of course, but it looks to be that the players have no idea what is being asked of them.

Really? What fecking logic did Moyes have? he was a lucky manager that kept a mid table club, mid table- the we hired him, Can you explain what exactly his logic was?
Never seen such pointless substitutions ever. We are losing and in the injury time we replace a centre back with a centre back. Zero ambition. Zero ability to have any influence on game once it starts, pointless substitutions and no touchline instructions. LVG has not shown anything that suggests we have hired a much better manager after Moyes. He makes too many excuses for himself and it's always something else that is too blame.

It may be too harsh on him, but I am sure he will have a better night's sleep today than thousands of fans all over the world. He just doesn't seem to care that much about us. Its just a cushy job before retirement.

Sorry, my post seems to have confused a few. What I meant was that he has to achieve 4 at worst not that we can't finish below.

Ancelotti would be okay. I'm not particularly enthusiastic about him to be honest. Pep is a different matter. I think he's the type of change this club desperately need.

Fair enough, I do reckon top 4 is going to be ridiculously tight this year, as is winning the title, sad really because if we just had a little bit more about us we could win the prem and fairly easily as well.

Just not sure Pep is on the agenda, the denials from us and silence from City seem to point to a deal been close with them imo.

Carlo would bring that instant respect, he would also be huge a attraction to new signings, there wouldn't be any of this prickly nonsense that you get from LvG, also he seems very likeable and the players would probably actually be happy which would give the place a whole new feel, and finally he would play decent football, just ticks all the boxes.

so wait do we need emergency buys or is the squad fine and its all LVG's fault?

No one can deny we need a couple of players in January. At least an attacker or two. We also need a new manager. There's always multiple factors that go into a failure, our squad right now is weak and thin. LvG also isn't getting good enough performances out of those we do have.

He only got the job by default anyway. He wasn't even considered when Fergie retired.

We sacked Moyes, and there was no one else of note that was free.

There's no real difference in 5th or 7th/8th. LVG has lead big teams and won big things a while ago. He's not inspiring any confidence in me. I'll give you that anyway. There is between 4th and 7th. I have faith in LVG to make the former happen. I have none in Giggs.

I'd take Giggs just to see us trying something different, if LVG has lost the dressing room there's little point keeping him on, we're just prolonging the inevitable. I could care less about top 4 right now because we'll invariably do feck all with CL football. The club needs to show some ambition and get Ancelotti sooner or later, either an agreement to take over next summer or bring him in before January, if he can be convinced that is. This is all under the assumption that the club can see Van Gaal needs to go, something I'm just confident in. We saw them sticking on with Moyes until April ffs, about 5 months too long.
