Jesus Christ, with the amount of money RM splurged, you would think he had a decent squad.
He had a good squad, nobody claimed otherwise. You disagreed with the idea that Guardiola had a superior squad which is what I (and other posters too, it seems) disagreed with. Don't try to change the argument.

Even for the sake of argument, I think Jose would still lose to Barca with a "better squad".
Perhaps. There is no evidence that this would be the case, however, as every time they have faced each other, Guardiola has had the better team. As of right now, there is nothing to back up this opinion of yours. Maybe in the future that will change and Mourinho will have the better team for once.

Pep and Barca were on a different level during that time.
Yes, they were, and that is down to his excellent management as well as him having the best players in the world at his disposal, including those who played a big part in Spain winning trophies before and during his time at the helm.

He still best not be hear next season. But whilst he is.. he best get us top 4.

That wasn't an LVG brand performance at all. Unless I'm mistaken this is the first match this season in which we haven't had the ball more than the opponent. So, the philosophers don't have anything to crow about, really.

If we had been delivering performances like this more regularly there wouldn't have been an "LVG out" thread to begin with.

The question now is how he, himself, evaluates the match and the way we played.

He's not going until the end of the season anyway, so the stubborn fart can at least try and get us into 4th and go out with some dignity.

Abandoned his philosophy tonight and we got back to playing the United way. This is what he's deprived us of for the last 18 months.

If we'd have played properly for much of the season then we'd be closer the top. I think Shaws injury hurt us a lot but our attitude for much of the season has been negative. Now we're seeing a proper performance and that will lead to good things. We're not a poor team. We just need a manager who has faith in his players - to attack teams and force mistakes.

if he can't get credit when we play well then he is going to struggle. We have played counter attacking under him before. His entire AZ title winning team was built around counter attacking. The credit should really be his even if we have had high possession in previous games this season

still want him gone, he's either too thick or too stubborn not to admit/realize the way the game played today was the only way to get us somewhere in this league. Not the stupid way played and lost/drew to Norwich and Southampton, Bournemouth, Newcastle home and away.

He isn't the way forwards.

Of course he deserves credit, I never said he didn't.

But it becomes a slightly different story if what he deserves credit for is ditching the philosophy, as we've seen it on display for most of this season. What happened tonight wasn't that we finally clicked, playing the same cautious and possession based football he seemingly wants us to play: We played a different tune.

Which is great. But it doesn't vindicate his insistence on playing a different brand of football for most of his tenure. If anything it begs the question why he hasn't changed the tune before now.

One performance does not a season make.

Basically. I'm very happy with the performance tonight, but let's see us actually string several decent performances together and look like we have a good chance of making top four (which is the bare minimum we should be doing, lest we forget) before people come into the thread with the predictable 'roll eye' smiley.

He's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't. Give him credit where it's due and tonight hes due credit.

I don't care if we make top 4 or not, he still has to go when the season ends at the very latest, one swallow does not make a summer.

I was just making the point that the philosophy is kinda mysterious and he has played counter attacking in the past with good success. He would say himself that his 'philosophy' is very flexible and not just based on possession. Hopefully he gets the message that this brand of philosophy is what we want. The 9-10 times we have played more freely under him in the last 18 months it has been not just okay but really great to watch imo

He's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't.

Not really. Not for me, anyway. If we start playing like we did tonight on a regular basis, he isn't damned. But it's impossible to ignore the change in the way we went about our business tonight: We didn't dominate the possession, we didn't dally on the ball looking for the safe option, we attacked freely - and damn near recklessly compared to our standard mode this season.

If that's pure coincidence and his instructions were precisely what they've been before, then I'd be a bit surprised. So, if he's decided to change his approach - brilliant, nothing better. But if this is the case, it's not a triumph of stubborness and philosophy - it's him doing what people have been waiting for, but finding it unlikely that he would actually do, viz. to try something other than the usual brand of possession football we've been seeing for 18 months now.

He would say himself that his 'philosophy' is very flexible and not just based on possession.

I'm sure he would. But we haven't seen much beyond cautious and possession based football under him at United. If he can start to trust the team to play on different strings, I'll be delighted.

We'll see how he sets up next match.

Nothing has changed regarding him, we only had a properly fit Carrick and two full backs proving width upfront and contributing to attack to look like a proper team again. Some of the judgement on him was a tad harsh considering how terrible our defensive injury crisis had been.

the way Rooney, Mata and Martial were on the same wavelength was enlightening, freely interchanging and playing off each other. You just wonder if LVG deep down actually endorses it

Nope. If he hadn't spent 18 months trying to get us away from football like this we wouldn't be in this mess. This is the natural way for these players to play. All LVG has done is stifle it.

I can't imagine that he has anything against that.

But for me the most significant difference was both the overall aggression (not just the nominal attackers) and the, well, formation: We had Carrick as the one DM, with Fellaini playing a genuine CM role - bombing about almost dangerously - and Mata as an actual orchestrator in a central position.

That is very different from what we've seen per default. Obviously, everything will look better with players on song, but for my money it was structurally different as well, compared to what we've seen far too often.

He's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't. Give him credit where it's due and tonight hes due credit.

Is this how he wants to play though? Much less possession, passing forward, direct play, basically what we all have been asking for.

If this is what he wants why hasn't he done it sooner, or has he only done it becasue it was basically his last throw of the dice, if so I'm not sure he deserves any credit really, just yet anyway.

He has put is through so much footballing pain this season, and I'm still very much looking forward to seeing the back of him.

A HAPPY COACH
"Yes, I am a happy coach. When you see how we created the goals, with fantastic play building up from the back and finishing - that’s what I like. In the second half we controlled the game and did not give any chances to Stoke City which is unbelievable because Stoke have made it very difficult for a lot of teams."

EARLY GOAL WAS KEY
"Michael Carrick said to me what a difference a first-half goal makes because you play with much more confidence and you can do much more. I believe that was the difference. We scored two goals in the first half and it was an easier game than I expected."

SUPERB TEAM GOAL
"I always like team goals and the second one was a team goal, building up from the back and then switching the play to the other side and then a finish like that, it was fantastic. I also liked the first goal because it was also a team goal – a cross from [Cameron] Borthwick-Jackson on his birthday, an assist and then Jesse [Lingard] coming in from the other side. I am very happy."

ROONEY CLOSER TO SIR BOBBY CHARLTON'S GOAL TALLY
"I hope he gets the record because when he scores we win."

TURNING POINT FOR SCORING GOALS?
"It could be a turning point but you never know. It’s better to score goals like this and better for the manager on the bench because I could change players to give others some minutes."

GOOD START TO A BUSY FEBRUARY
"It’s fantastic. I think 2016 is a year we have started very well."

Good performance today. Won't get carried away. All we had last season were 'those three games'.

Will be interesting to see if we carry on playing like this.

Interesting to see what would happen if we did end the season well

I want him to win every match but at the same time I don't think he is the answer going ahead

The fact we're all pleasantly surprised at comfortably beating Stoke at home has shown how far our expectations have dropped.

Let's not be fickle, he shouldn't be our manager next season or ideally earlier, not when Mourinho is available.

Performances like tonight have been the exceptions, rather than the rule under LvG. It'll be extremely interesting to see if he can get the team into a good bit of consistency, which he's never really managed during his tenure. You've got to think if Rooney continues this purple patch of his we'll probably keep winning.

Yeah, so far we always follow up a promising performance with an absolute garbage one. Let's see if we can get a run going.
