Pretty much agree.LvG has bought the wrong players. Our squad doesn't have the technical ability to play tiki taka football in tight spaces. You can moan about a lack of movement if you like, but I think it comes down to our players not trusting their teammates to find them with the right pass in congested areas of the pitch. That's why they dawdle around in non-threatening positions of space instead. Out of all of our squad, only Mata has the reliable accuracy that's required. It's the reason he's been a mainstay in the side up until recently, when we shifted away from possession football.
Van Gaal has dulled our football, wasted our money, cost us in the league and all for little return in terms of squad recomposition. I see hardly any long term positive from his reign.
It's 'England National team syndrome' - players who don't trust their ability to pass or receive under any sort of pressure and without space to make three touches to control. and often the receiver controls with a touch taking them away from goal and back into a non-threatening area.
So passes keep being made to the guy in space, and 55-70% still ends up in crossing as the main creator of chances.
As for Mata: I wouldn't say he's much more suited to it than the rest. Yes he''s accurate (more than pretty much anyone else) but it's usually a non-threatening accurate. He still doesn't have the ability to do much with the ball when under pressure. He still gets forced away from goal too easily, drops into non-threatening areas, can't turn his man, or dribble his man very often.
Worlds away from the likes of Costa, Robben, Iniesta, silva, Muller, Ozil...
He'd still be too limited for Guardiola to build around. That ability to side-step challenges just isn't there.
