He really has gone to war with them.

I wonder if Fergie has had a word and said we are too open with the press and we should go back to being difficult with them? I know LVG has never been afraid of annoying the journos but it seems to have escalated lately.

Who thinks we'll be in a better place at the end of this season than we were at the end of last? We're going nowhere with LVG.

We have messed up really badly. We let go of so many important players either because of LVG being stubborn or because of taking a principled position of telling the players exactly where they stood and that they were free to leave if they wished to. This approach works only in the long run when the authority of the manager is fully established. But after weakening the team so much, we have come to a situation where we may sack him leaving everything that happened before completely worthless and wasted.

I dont think the season will have been a waste, depending on what comes next. At the very least the new players will have had a season to settle in and can reasonably be expected to perform better next season, with the group being more comfortable playing together. I dont think another cull and complete revamp of the squad is necessary, though if that is the road we go down then yes, we'll end up back at square one. If we keep the nucleus of the squad intact and make a few additions to strengthen in key places we'll build on this season, even if it is under a new manager playing a different style of football. And even if we end up mid table this season, with no improvement on what we have seen in the last few months.

Others wont necessarily agree with this diagnosis but if like me you believe that a big part of our problem was the scale and speed of the changes we have gone through, then having got a season under our belt will be an asset in itself. Its probably clutching at straws a little but in that sense at least, this season wont have been a complete waste. Also, something Ive said a few times before but is worth reiterating IMO, even if we dont continue with Van Gaal's style of football or principles, I dont think it will have done the players any harm to have experienced it. Not going down the "he is what made Barca and Bayern great" road, but playing under different managers and different, OK ill use the word, philosophies, can never be a bad thing in the long run. OK it doesnt help us in our quest for silverware this season, but it will have developed the players in new ways, some of which they may find useful and keep, others they wont and they can discard. Its all experience.

Very sensible post

I was all for him when we signed him but literally just seeing his face winds me up now, he's so full of sh1t it's unbelievable, we very luckily beat the scum and now he thinks we can go for the title :wenger:, and as for the philosophy bullshit, where has that gone now?

It's ridiculous that people don't want mourinho for his antics but are quite happy for this cretin to run our club into the ground while making us the laughing stock of European football having spent around £300 million and making us worse than when the prat arrived!

Now that lifting the EPL trophy is out of the question -- and it is -- I'm happy to see LVG finish out the season with a fourth place finish. It's far from a forgone conclusion that we'll get there but I'm pretty confident that we will.

But come this summer, it's time for the club to thank LVG and move on.

Fourth place wasnt really the target this season though. It was a year to push on and maybe have a proper title challenge and do well in Europe(we need the points, next year might see us in pot C)

I still dont think Van Gaal will walk if we make top 4. He'll be content to get another season. And I dont want to put my faith in the board acting, that's just begging for disapointment.

Agreed. The board should be prepared to walk the man out the door this summer unless we've somehow made a legitimate run by season's end for the league trophy. Season #2 has been a serious disappointment and there's no denying that LVG is responsible for the disappointing play we've seen all season.

We are adjusting targets as we go. It's disappointing that we could possibly be happy with top 4 in a season where 80 points will likely suffice to win the title with the league being in such poor state.

Reports surfacing today that he plans to resign at the end of the season.

But if that is indeed his thinking, who do you replace him with. It would be too late to woo Pep. Only Mou available or Ryan.
United need to go A list. If Guardiola is out of the question, go for Mourinho. I'd tell Giggs to go and start his managerial career at another club too.

Blanc would be a good shout too. But if United DO win some trophy this season, it could certainly change his thinking on the resignation.

I have a strong suspicion he's jumping before being pushed. I think he's realised the clubs failure to back him this transfer window probably means they would rather save the money for the next manager to spend in the summer.

I really doubt that. One of his biggest supporter has been Woodward and he has done reasonably well in the Transfer Window. He is known to be a man of Integrity and clearly he feels he is not good enough to manage United or it is indeed having an affect on his family's life.

If Blanc takes PSG to a Champions League semi final or final, I'd agree about Blanc. If United don't win the league, I can see van Gaal leaving united by "mutual consent"

Based on nothing really. Some papers are putting it down to his family being worried about his health.Which he'll probably dismiss at his next less conference.

It's more that United tell him that they will want someone else for next season than and give him a nice, face saving exit. Fine by me

He would miss out on £6m by resigning. Not going to happen unless agree to compensate.

If it's true that Ed persuaded him to stay after the Stoke game, then oath parties probably know this will be their last season together.
His remit is season was a genuine title challenge and it looks like he's going to fail miserably at that.
I think it will be his last season and the club already knows.
I am calling bullshit on the clubs stance they aren't interested in Guardiola.
The club probably don't want to turn him into a lame duck and heap pressure on him like there is on Pellegrini.
Pellegrini gets asked questions about Guardiola virtually every conference and it's disrespectful.

I actually don't think he cares about money. He's said it many times that if he thinks he's lost the players, he would resign and I believe him.
He's done it before.

It would make sense. I don't think the club want to sack him. I think though, he's done a decent job but would need 2-3 years perhaps to create his own team. With a year left in the summer, it makes sense to let him retire and bring someone else in. How many players won't want to sign because LVG only has a year left? I can't see us giving him a new contract. I also can't see us letting him have another year, because it hinders planning for the future.

Thing is we really still don't know how this season will pan out - we could go on a run and be in with a shout of the title and possibly also win a cup and LVG is vindicated. Equally, it could just end with a whimper rather than a bang, in which case it really would be time to consider parting company.

I don't think anyone (not even LVG) is doing this. Top 4 is always minimum target for United but this year it was surely top 3, which means both a realistic effort at the title along with the bonus of avoiding CL qualifying round uncertainty. I am in no doubt that if this does not materialise the board and LVG will both consider that he has underperformed...

Other than the two wins against Pool, its been a largely forgettable season.

We seem to slowly creeping into the territory where we are average, yet it doesnt bother many. Almost becoming content with it.

Lets hope the board show some ambition. Proper ambition, like getting back amongst the top 3/4 clubs in Europe.

The league is in a very poor state indeed.

But we are fairly big contributors to that in the sense that we set such a high bar that winning the league usually meant 87 plus points. We havent gotten close to 80 since Sir Alex left, and we probably wont this season either.
