England will do well to finish 3rd
Yeah, it's all very formulaic by now. The same sequence of headlines leading up to every new signing. With the occasional crushing disappointment at the end of it all. I know I sound like an old codger but I really did prefer the days when the first time I knew we'd signed someone was when there was a photo of him in the tabloids holding a United shirt in the air.
I was on a bus when I saw Andy Cole had signed, over someone's shoulder in a newspaper. Not a sniff of a rumour first.

I don't remember any speculation before the day we signed Anderson and Nani.
Mind you, that didn't turn out quite as well as we all hoped.

You'll go to any lengths to pretend you don't read The Sun, won't you?I was on a bus when I saw Andy Cole had signed, over someone's shoulder in a newspaper. Not a sniff of a rumour first.

There was plenty of speculation about Nani. Anderson came out of nowhere though.I don't remember any speculation before the day we signed Anderson and Nani.

I think that the problem today is the selling club. Its always convenient to the selling club to leak the news to try and trigger an auction between two or more big clubs. In the past that wasn't really needed since no one could outbid United (unless of course it was a foreign club).
Sincher produced an excellent example with Ando/Nani. In these particular deals there was a minimum fee clause which removed any chance of auctioning. Hence why they were pretty straightforward.

Yeah, that's true with actual transfers, most of what is printed is based on nothing, which is suppose is most of the 'noise'.
It was teletext where I used to find out who we had bought when I was a kiddo.I was on a bus when I saw Andy Cole had signed, over someone's shoulder in a newspaper. Not a sniff of a rumour first.

I was watching games on Teletext only as far back as 8 years ago. What kind of backwater do I live in?I used to watch games on teletext.
After walking home from school through 15 miles of snow. Barefoot.
I really did watch games on teletext though. I sometimes remind myself of that when I'm getting worked up about a bad stream.

Loved teletext. I watched the 6:2 over Arsenal on that because my radio died. I remember loving the transfer news on there but that was complete twaddle most of the time as well. I remember telling everyone at school we had signed Batistuta, I bet one kid a tenner, never paid him though. Didn't have a tenner.
90 pages and the transfer window hasn't even opened yet. This has the potential to become a record breaking thread should it stretch beyond the world cup with no sort of announcement. I hope this deal is completed as soon as possible after this recent trend of reporters being so certain of this transfer happening.
I loved all those phone in numbers to find out the latest gossip and transfer rumours teletext used to advertise.
First I knew of teddy signing was via teletext aka the shit internet of the past

Did you ring them? What did they say?
Check this new Teletext thing, it sounds exciting. So, is there any new information other than the rumours his parents are looking for a house in Chesire?
I watched that at Highbury, I still bear the mental scars.Loved teletext. I watched the 6:2 over Arsenal on that because my radio died.
My dad was obsessed with it. He used to use it for every sports related news he could find. He'd spend hours on it.Check this new Teletext thing, it sounds exciting.
i doubt he would have any inside infoLou macari thinks that this deal is done and dusted
It did? I thought it opens on the 1st of July. The transfer window opened the day after the last game of the season.

He'd look at the rugby, football, hockey(Irish club league), and other bits and pieces. At times I'd be watching TV and he'd come in and ask for the remote. He'd spend a good 10 minutes looking at it before we eventually got it back off him. How? It only had about 10, very short, sports pages at any given time!
never. Got bollocked as a kid for phoning a weekly news line thing and ran up a £400 quid bill at me nans. The hiding I got from me dad meant i never dared againDid you ring them? What did they say?
