So did I. And it wasn't even that long ago. I remember the last game I watched on teletext was the 4-2 win at Highbury, which was about ten years ago. Champions League nights were basically listening to the radio + watching teletext oscillate between page 1 and page 2 of page 316.

Think all he said was he wasn't going to allow people to leave camp to go complete deals - so medicals I am assuming. He can't stop a deal from taking place with only thing pending being a medical.
Yes the transfer window opens after the last game of the season between clubs in the same association.
Players however can not be registered till whatever the date is 1st of June etc.

Players won't be leaving the camp to talk to agents/have medicals and agents won't be coming in to talk to players. Anything that can be done over the phone, he acknowledges he can't stop. But in principle it's obvious that he'd like all transfer stuff to be put on ice until after the tournament, and it's entirely possible the players will respect that.
The same fecker who said he can stop United with a pub team. He can well and truly feck off. Just for that we need to announce this deal before the WC. feck off Woy!

Hodgson trying to bar any deals being completed could be counterproductive. Surely, it'd be better to allow club reps to visit the England training camp and complete formalities, thus putting the matter to bed and giving the player a spring in his step prior to the WC...

Hodgson's clearly doing the right thing for England. You can't have players worrying over their futures when they should be focussing on the tournament.
Would it not be more off putting knowing Utd have bid for you, but you have to wait 5 weeks to finish it off.
I think this deal could get done pre the world cup, if it doesnt I think it may be because he's hoping Chelsea come in for him (which potentially they will)
I bet some players it would cause issues, "got that medical coming up, best not get stuck in to the hard tackles...."

God, I hope we wrap this up soon. The silence regarding this deal is making me a bit wary.
I really hope we get this deal done before the WC. If Luke Shaw has a great WC Southampton might want more and others might come in for him. I don't understand all the silence. We allegedly made a bid for him and have had no response to our bid to our knowledge.
It's safe to assume that it's Southampton's side who are prolonging this, and not ours (maybe we're weighing up our options - but I doubt it).
It's not really in their interest to get this wrapped up this quickly, and with the world cup they have the perfect excuse to take their time and drag it on.
And often one of the biggest hold ups isn't the fee itself, but the number and rate of instalments.
It could also be a case of waiting until Shaw himself has signed the paper work before we announce anything, or it could be a desire to unveil this signing (if it happens) with another one or two.

I'm not that old, and I very clearly remember doing that too. It was either that, or waiting for the news to come on to find out results. I remember when I found out about streaming (which was probably around the time streaming actually became a thing), it was incredible. You mean I can watch games that aren't on the TV? These days I get grumpy if I can't find a HD stream in English.

I like to think we've learnt from the last two years that when you want somebody, and it comes down to two or three million, you get it done.
It's possible we haven't though.

I think it isnt a case of the deal has not been agreed, I think its similar to LVG there are small details to iron out and I think well get an announcement with another signing fairly soon.
Im basing this off what happened with LVG and also the widely reported suggestion that we will have two players signed before the world cup with announcements happening hopefully within that time frame.

Perhaps he's dotting the i's and crossing the tease.
That's a risky game to play with players.
There wasn't another club LVG was going to apart from us, so we had time to dither around and get all the small details sorted and not have to rush, however with Shaw and Kroos just a single phone call from Chelsea, Barcelona, Madrid or one of the other top sides could could change their mind completely.
If we lost these deals over small details I think we would all have a right to be fuming with Ed, we need to be ruthless now.
Agreed, however I think its way way beyond the point of no return. Shaw is probably training with England pretty relaxed knowing exactly where he will be.
Also I think Chelsea are more interested in Filipe Luis. We are essentially taking a huge risk on this fella, everyone can see he has bags and bags of potential but he is far from proven in the Premier League and will need mentoring and guidance.
The only club I could see coming in for him in a serious way would be City and considering the fee will be in the region of 27m that would be over half of their spending cap.

Well he's more 'proven in the Premier League' than Filipe Luis... but I do see what you're saying. Less proven in top-level senior football is what you mean I suppose.
Can you imagine if we missed out on a player because we were delaying so that we could announce two together? The caf would fecking implode.
It sounds reasonable though, Van Gaal would show his intention by revealing a superb young English player and a world class player. Would be a great PR spin for the club.
Isn't it most likely that there are delays because we're negotiating the fee with Southampton? I can't imagine this has anything to do with another player.
