Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

It sounds reasonable though, Van Gaal would show his intention by revealing a superb young English player and a world class player. Would be a great PR spin for the club.

Worth risking actually laying hands on those players? What does it matter if we reveal them together or separately?

I like to think we've learnt from the last two years that when you want somebody, and it comes down to two or three million, you get it done.
It's possible we haven't though.
I just don't think it's in Southampton's interest to allow us to wrap this up quickly.

Do you think we're further away from getting him than is being reported? Or it's us dithering?

Firstly, we have a Chief Exec capable of anything.....so thats worth remembering. Secondly, why announce a deal for a player before having a manager in place? It would creat the impression he was a club signing rather than the manager, therefore, creating unnecessary pressure on the player himself.

We have been after Shaw for a number of months. I dont think anything has changed and i think its a case of minor details - not necessarily Southampton delaying, but more our fearless leader who is most likely attempting some last minute negotiation. I would expect some movement over next few days.

That would amazing

What makes you say we're close to tying up Kroos though? I thought it was just the Daily Mail that were reporting it?

It seems to be spreading. I think there's no smoke without fire. We're certainly in for him and I think the 20m fee sounds reasonable, I think the Media would ham the fee up to the 30m-40m bracket to sell papers. 20m seems like a genuine figure in my head anyway. /shrugs.

Ah, this old chestnut. Why is two shit papers reporting a rumour any more reliable than one? They're not getting independent inside information, you know, they're just parroting the rumour from one another.

What's to say its not been done and dusted already? But the official announcement is being delayed until we complete the Kroos signing. Seems like a reasonable theory, Woody and Van Gaal will know that having a double announcement will be a great PR spin for the club. It'd help boost those share prices right back up. Could be wrong of course, I'm just reading between the lines. A deal doesn't go from almost being to complete to a media blackout.

It's basically one dog eating another's shit. And repeating it over and over.

I'm sure we are in for Kroos and we may have had a deal with him for a while now. Bayern, though, that's something else. I don't believe we have any deal with them.

Indeed. The fact that it's spreading between shit websites doesn't make it any more concrete.

To be fair, tabloids do sometimes have big reports that end up being true. But when it comes to transfers, if things are correct, then the mainstream media tends to pick up on it during the day. It hasn't happened in England, there seems to be nothing on in Germany. So for me, the Kroos reports are crap.

I know none of this actually matters because it's all hypothetical, but why on earth do you think a double announcement is worth more than two separate ones? Shareholders aren't goldfish, you know - they won't have forgotten that we've signed the first player by the time we sign the second!

"Oh great, we signed Toni Kroos! Shame we haven't sorted out that LB spot yet."
"We did. We got Luke Shaw a week ago."
"Luke Shaw! Great! Now we just need to sort out that CM position."
"We did. We just signed Toni Kroos... here, I'll get you a photo of them standing next to each other to help you remember."

Well it's true. We're certainly in for Kroos and it seems like we've been negotiating with Bayern and the player for months (just like we have with Southampton and Shaw). Bayern aren't paying out the money to give Kroos a wage increase so Kroos wants to leave. At this point Bayern have three options: Cash in, Give in to Kroos' wage demands, or let him rot on the bench for a season and allow him to leave on a free next Summer.

It's either Option A or B. Can they afford to increase his wages which will no doubt cause a chain reaction throughout the squad (which tends to happen, see United this season for example). I think they'll cash in.

It's not just down to shareholders, it's the complete market value. Sponsors, Shareholders, Fans, even players themselves. Having Shaw and Kroos as a dual announcement shows that we're after top young talent but also are bringing in world class talent. I just think it's a bigger media spin, better media coverage etc.

The bigger the story, the louder it's spoken.

Nah I think it works the opposite way. If you announce two together you get one announcement for the price of two, literally. Announce them separately you get a boost Monday and a boost Friday. With a dual announcement there's the risk one will be overshadowed by the other. With all due respect to Shaw, Kroos will be the signing most salivate over despite costing less. There' a chance you might make a £27m signing and he's made a mere footnote in the story.

"United takes steps to solve their MF problems by signing 24 year old German superstar...........left-back also signed"

Well, we agree to disagree! :)

None of that has anything to do with this, its just you lot making up absurd theories. Nothing has been reported on Shaw but there has for Kroos, therefore, make shit up. Can you not see there is no logic to this thinking.

Separate announcements would have exactly the same effect. How dim do you think people are?

I seriously doubt they are delaying the announcement for any reason. When you are dealing with this sort of money it will often be a long drawn out process. People need to be patient. The season just ended.

*expect your full apology when it happens

Nope. Where've I said it won't happen? Just don't understand why you think it matters which way we do it.

Maybe you think it means something to do a double announcement, but most people understand that either way we would have bought the same two players.

Signal of intent, Van Gaals first signing. I think it means a pretty big deal personally. It's just a theory, I could be way off the mark. :)

 I don't classify Gamit/SolidState as Transfer muppets, making crap up and pretending to be an ITK isn't the same as a Transfer Muppet for me. They're ITK Muppets, a whole new breed!

So many fecking transfer threads regress into an entrenched debate between two camps. One saying it will happen. One saying it won't. Despite each being as utterly clueless as the other about what is actually happening. This can go on for pages.

Transfer threads are fairly fecking tedious at the best of times but at least discussions about whether a player will be a good signing and how he might be used make some sort of sense. Even if only hypothetical. This latest tangent is beyond pointless.

Sparkles isn't really a Muppet. He just had a hard on for Ronaldo and wanted to express his man love for him.

Thanks Damien, seem's my eyes weren't what they were..

Couldn't agree more, I think this is why I and many others only really read the cafe come Summer, I rarely post as I think it isn't as coherent, people would rather be right about a small insignificant point that have an actual discussion..

To be fair, a lot of the players we've been linked to recently will undoubtedly be good signings if we manage to pull them off. Not many people disagree with that and so there's no debate on it.

There are people on every transfer thread every year who would love to be unduly negative. My personal favourite is "I can't see it happening" which means nothing in the context of nobody actually knowing any more than anyone else.

Its not a hard choice to make - either a player will join or he wont. You're bound to be right some of the time.

And the person who, season upon season, thread upon thread, can't help pointing it out.

Face it, Pogue, there's no way to post anything in a transfer thread without becoming one of the idiots. It's satire of Swiftean inescapability. (That includes this post, of course - in the category of 'smug theories about the transfer forum'.)

Turns out we're not interested in him either.

It's not a wum. I'm just predicting the future.

As per the rest of my post (the bit you deleted from your quote) I think you can talk about transfers from a fairly informed position if you want to discuss whether you think someone will be a good signing or not and how he will fit in our team. Feck it, can't stand it myself but people can even talk about what sort of fee would be reasonable.

It's the will we/won't we stuff that is utterly pointless. Either we'll sign the player or we won't. Trying to convince other people why we will or won't sign a specific player when none of us have the foggiest about the answer just seems a spectacular waste of everyone's time. Of course, I'm aware that debating anything on here - or in any other forum - is arguably a complete waste of time so I appreciate it's all relative!

I totally agree that you could talk about transfers from those sensible angles. But you'd struggle to, on this forum in the dog days of transfer season. Once the will he/won't he starts it's a lost cause.

So I guess I wasn't disagreeing with your original post exactly, just adding to it.

I'm steering clear of major participation in any transfer threads this summer. The Fabregas thread last summer took my soul :(

"talks are ongoing" apparently.. seriously fed up with this phrase.. we've been speaking for over two weeks now, what's their to bloody talk about?
