Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

"It sure fecking does. I'd rather trust a businessman who has been responsible for deals worth hundreds of millions be responsible for transfers than a "football man" like ol' 'Arry."

started with this from @Lu Tze (you). Maybe I misinterepreted it - but that's what got this started.

I like that one of Manchester Uniteds chief executives, who we believe could be in control of transfers, and learned from one of the very best exec/football men in Gill, wouldn't have a single clue who Manchester United need to be signing. Where as some random lads on the internet(myself included) apparently do.

This in the thread discussing that he's trying to buy the (probable)best prospect in the world in his position, one where the aforementioned internet lads have already agreed we badly need a signing.

Our scouts probably have a page/app saved about Shaw on their lovely new iPads.

How long before "I don't want to do anything until after the World Cup. My focus is on England until then."?

I'm pretty sure nothing can be announced until after the manager is revealed anyway.

Yeah we can obviously announce signings before the new manager is in the hotseat. The question is do the club want to?

There is also the question of whether Shaw will want to commit at this point. He might not.

Hodgson wants Shaw and Lallana deals sorted out so they can focus on the world cup. Can only be a good thing for us

It can.

Fairly sure Chelsea signed players before a manager before. Possibly Edin Hazard was one.

I'll rephrase, I meant to say @ United as in, I doubt we would announce a signing before we announce the manager.

Shaw will clearly be happy with a move to us, we just have to get Southampton to agree.

Just hope Chelsea don't change their minds and go for him too.

Chelsea have some issues with FFP don't they? If they have got Costa, can they afford to spend more big money on Shaw? They probably can, but I hope they get cautious.

They've got shedloads of players to sell that are on loan. Marin, Piazon, Moses, could sell Ba too. They won't be struggling to shed out £60M with those leaving, and with Cole going that's a big wage gone too.

If they refused 27 million, let him there, for the love of good...

Chelsea signed diego costa for 32...

Yeah I figured the'y be able to free-up some money with other transactions. Hopefully we can get the deal done before they sell some of their redundant players then.

I think Southampton's current manager is key. If they want to keep him then they have to show a bit of ambition, which probably means fighting tooth and nail to keep all their best players.

They will get plenty of cash for the players, they just need a decent manager and they will be ok.

Naah, Pochettino's key for them. If he stays, think they'l do well considering the cash they'l get. But an average manager next and they might drop considerably.

They will sell Osvaldo too won't they? I'm not really sure what the deal is with him.

They'll struggle to buy players as good, or find a manager who can carry on what he has done. After all, they spent around £12m on Ramirez, who's been an absolute flop. They spent another £14m odd, from memory, on Osvaldo, with the same results. I'd rather have the proven players, tbh.

They still have a top class youth system though. I think it will be important for them to pick a good manager, not an easy task these days.

No matter how good your youth system is, you can't consistently produce players like Shaw and Lallana. I'm not absolutely convinced that this isn't their Class of 92, rather than proof that they have a conveyor belt of talent to replace every player they sell for big money.

But I agree. Get the right manager and it'll all be much more positive.

How much do you think they'd get for him? Or are the issues so great that no one else would even look at him?

He's on loan at Juve but they have the option to buy him for €19 million. If Juve don't exercise the option, I doubt that another team would pay that much for him. If they do however, it'd be great for the Saints as they bought him from Roma for €15.1 million. Making a profit from a 28 year old troublemaker would be great for them, highly unlikely though.

They also produced Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Not bad work.

Dont think they'l get much more than 10-12 mil. His off field troubles are too well documented and he isnt good enough to merit a high fee inspite of that.

I'm not doubting they've a great youth set up, but they sold Walcott in 2006, Bale in 2007 and Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2011. Bringing through those players (and others) in 5 years is obviously great, but if you were to sell two of your best players every summer, it'd be optimistic to expect to replace them seamlessly. Just to stay in the position they're in they'll probably need to replace Lallana, their captain and one of their best attacking players and Shaw, one of the best left backs in the league. I can't see it being that easy, tbh.

"The Secret Footballer" has posted this in his recent column. I don't know how he knows this, but interesting if true:

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Shaw, which you may not know, is that, during his formative years in Southampton's academy, he set the record as the fastest player in its history over 100 metres.

Faster than Theo Walcott, faster than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and faster, even, than Gareth Bale. With potential like that, it is no surprise that United are willing to part with upwards of £27million for the 18-year-old.

Pace!
