Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Did we confirm the Mata bid straight away? Nope. The fee was already agreed, that's why it finally became public knowledge on Sunday. We can't just come out and say "It's done" - that would completely irk the Southampton fans - it will play out for a few days as if negotiations are happening, then it will be confirmed. Keep the faith.

Yup. Fingers crossed for successful resolution.

That's only because you follow the transfers closely, where's with other clubs you only hear about once it's close to being done or when it's done.

Yup, you're right. The Lallana thing also came out a few days ago and nothing has happened.

I'll shut up now! :D

Fair points all. Just hope we aren't gazzumped.

Whatever said and done, Ed Woodward would be cautious of the fact that unless he performs the miracles that he did with gigantic commercial deals we've acquired, his job may not be secure. He needs to perform. Last year he could blame Moyes, but this year he needs to work with Van Gaal and decide who to get and move quick.

The Glazers aren't idiots, they know that the Top Man of Manchester United can't be seen to be weak. Their commercial partners would be eyeing the situation closely and now it's our time to show the world that we mean real business.

If PSG can struggle to agree with Newcastle for Cabaye than we can to. If i was Woodward i would bid for R. Rodriguez in the same time, just to force Southampton hand.

Far superior might be an exaggeration. But there are certain risks present in signing any young player. Injury development, ability to perform at the highest level, composure in the kind of intense pressure situations United players face (champions League, finals, title chase etc) are all question marks. Personally I think Shaw will go on to be a star and deal with these challenges. But he may not, while we know Coentrao is already proven. Given that we have a need to strengthen in other positions, I think minimizing the risk and saving quite a bit in transfer fees makes Coentrao the better choice.

I'm not saying I'll be unhappy if we get Shaw instead, as he's definitely a talent. I just think we can get better performance, for our needs at this time, for a lower price.

The reason Coentrao is potentially moving on from Madrid is because he hasn't proven himself particularly capable of being a first choice fullback at the top level for an elite European club. He is proven in a sense, but some of the things he's proven so far are the reason for his lower value and Madrid's willingness to sell. Just look who Madrid are trying to replace him with - a young domestic talent. For me Shaw's an absolute no brainer and Coentrao would just be a good fallback option.

They`re said to have been interested in Buttner. 25 + Buttner would make sense for everyone. They can spend a third of that bumping up Pochettino`s salary to get him to stay and a good left-back to compete with Buttner and use the rest on the rock of a CB they badly need to make the step, and the extra attacker they need (2 when Lallana goes) to go with Rodriguez and Lambert.

I highly doubt they want Buttner, they have young players coming through and it would be counter productive. Afterall trusting young Shaw worked out

What the hell do we need Rodriguez for.

Because of uncertainty at Old Trafford? What is uncertain at Man Utd?

We are getting a world renowned manager, we are going to (hopefully) be investing heavily this summer, we are the 3rd most valuable club in the world the last I heard, second to only Barca and Real Madrid and despite our shite season we are still better than Southampton.

Plus at 18/19 years old Shaw is probably going to be the first choice left back at one of the biggest clubs in the world and is going to be paid a very healthy amount of money for somebody his age.

Probably not a bad idea. Leak a story saying we are going after another target, hopefully that'll force Southampton into realising they better accept or they'll miss out on quite a good offer.

Some pundits don't half come out with some nonsense, although I doubt Luke Shaw is gonna give a toss what anyone tells him if Manchester United are in for him, especially considering they're the team who dominated the entire time he grew up. I doubt one dodgy season would immediately make everyone regard us as a League Two side. Sorry, just hate Matt.

Going for another LB is not going to force Southampton in to anything I don't think. If we make out we are going for somebody else they get to keep Shaw so it doesn't really matter to them.

It would be a different story if Shaw was unhappy or if Southampton had to sell but I am pretty sure they don't.

That's just Le Tissier for you. A wonderful player with absolutely no ambition at all. Being loyal an all is good, but you want to win some stuff too while you have a chance.

Its understandable Le Tit wants a bright young talent to stay at his club, but not everybody is devoid of ambition as he was. He would get a chance to shine at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and most likely a number of trophies once we get our house in order.

Haven't followed this much as I genuinely thought a leak of £27m would actually represent a conclusion of negotiations and expected this to be wrapped up by either us or a second club sooner rather than later.

But I found this quite an insightful quote and I wonder if the likes of Shaw and Lallana share this view:

From Skysports- Argentinian Pochettino, 42, described their eighth-place finish as "the end of a project", but Southampton are keen for him to sign a new deal with just a year left on his current contract.

The other thing is at 18 years old Le Tissier wasnt one of the best in his position in the league, proven over 2 consecutive league seasons. I remember him talking this weekend about how he was given his debut and was around for 3 or 4 seasons before he really felt like he made it as a core part of the team, let alone one of the best in his position. Thats more of a Lallana story than a Shaw one

Shaw's got plenty of time, a couple more years at Soton wouldn't do him any harm.

Interesting. Might be why Rodriguez is also being linked with a move away.

Would anyone here take anyone else from Southampton other than the 3 being linked with moves (Lallana, Rodriguez, and Shaw)?

Wow. We always hear about projects these days, not often you get to hear a manager saying one was successfully completed.

Sounds like Southampton are the ones with the "uncertain" future.

Surely if Southampton lose him they will start to panic? They were punching above their weight this season and I doubt the fans or the players would be confident of improving without Pochettino. Shaw must be thinking he will be Uniteds LB week in week out at the top tier of European football.. No brainer if you ask me.

Or if Southampton had any sense in that scenario they'd give the other club a call and ask if it's true.

How well do you think Pochettino would do with Spurs?

Will be interesting to see if he brings his high pressing game to Tottenham or adjust more to the talent on hand. Obviously much will depend on how much he'll be given to spend in the transfer market, but I think if he's given 2 seasons he will deliver results. If he's backed by the club this summer and next I think he will deliver a top-4 appearance.

The same fee that has been rumoured a few weeks back is the one we started bidding at. To me, that suggests that talks have been ongoing and we have reached some sort of understanding with Southampton before the official bid was made. If that's indeed the case, then this will be finalised soon. It does resemble the Mata transfer.

I think so too, seems like we've asked for a price and just given it to them rather than making stupid bids.

 Very graphic.

I find this stance towards Le Tissier a bit weird tbh. Players are labelled as greedy mercenaries, lambasted for not staying loyal to their home club etc. - but then are called unambitious if they do reject to move upward.
That actually sums up Le Tissier, loyal but without any ambition at all. You have to have at least some ambition. Le Tissier could have been a lot better than he was.

Everyone was going mental about that despite the deal only taking something like 5-7 days to complete which compared to other sagas is probably a reasonable amount of time.

I'm sure the fee was agreed before hand and hopefully it's just personal terms left to agree.
