Would love to see Clyne at United. We should have signed him up when he left Palace. We need a right back who can defend and stay fit for more than 2-3 games.I wouldn't mind a double swoop for both fullbacks. Clyne can cover both sides.

Has he signed yet? What's his shirt number going to be? And how is the medical coming along?
No. 3. The white sheet is being prepared.
He was playing for C. Palace in the Championship, so maybe teams did not want to take the risk. I first watched him when Palace played United and was very impressed. We should have taken a risk with him as he went for peanuts since he was out of contract. We did seem to be linked with him when he became available. I don't mean it as a slight on Southampton, but I'm surprised no bigger clubs went for him at the time.

Also why are people saying it's a done deal? Aren't the report saying we've bid for him? Chelsea and City can still blow us out of the water. Let's wait and see what happens.
He is a very solid player, not as good as Rafael going forward, but defensively he is what we need. I love attacking full backs, but they need to be able to defend, and defend smartly. He isn't really that good. Calum Chambers will replace him in the next year or so.

Blackett can play LB but I imagine LVG would want some experience. He might like Buttner though being a fellow Dutchie we shall see
True, but we need someone who can stay fit for more than a couple of games. Look at the history of injuries that Rafael has suffered, he has spend more time out injured than been fit. Do you really want to rely on Smalling and Jones to play that position for most of the season? Also, i'm still iffy about Rafael's defending even though he has been at the club for 6 years. He's an alright defender, no better than Rafael here. Like all full backs, he's made mistakes throughout the season.

Spot on I think Clyne will be a great signing as well. 45m for both of them I'd call a great dealWould love to see Clyne at United. We should have signed him up when he left Palace. We need a right back who can defend and stay fit for more than 2-3 games.
I agree with the general point, either we promote Varela or we buy in some decent cover and competition. I'd actually take a punt on Sagna if he wasn't going to end up at City.
I actually wanted us to take Ashley Cole when it became apparent Chelsea are letting him go. He's still a classy leftback at his age
If we get Shaw, I think Southampton could just move Clyne to the left, and let Chambers take over at RB.
Or maybe they'll snatch Ashley Cole on the cheap. Man, that would be great.
I meant Blackett not Janko..yeah he probably will stay

Clyne is about 23, so way old to be doing his A levels. Also by average age, Shaw would be in University or full time employment so....Really? £45m for two lads who are barely even old enough to have completed their A Levels is a great deal?

They probably would've went for BTEC's anyway.Thought Clyne was a little younger than that. Still, ridiculous fee for the pair.
Why would we want clyne anyway, he turned us down because he wouldn't play a lot of games. His loss. Plus he isn't THAT good.Thought Clyne was a little younger than that. Still, ridiculous fee for the pair.

Yeah but he turned us down, and if Rafael has another injury free season he won't play much at all. What would make him change his mind. I don't usually like bigging up youth players that I or most people have not seen, but if Varela is any good as people have said, why not him, he would be more comfortable with playing less games than Clyne I would imagine.Rafael could do with a back up that isn't naturally a central defender or winger and he'd help with our homegrown quota but other than that, I don't really see a reason.
£45m would be pretty excessive but I don't think it's too far off the mark. I think £40m for Shaw and Clyne would be an alright deal. We know Shaw would cost the best part of £30m, and in Clyne we'd get a versatile full back who can play on either side, pacey and good going forward, and solid in defence. Still yong n lernin too.45m for Shaw and Clyne?

I don't think £40m for Shaw and Clyne would be a bad deal at all. We know Shaw would cost the best part of £30m, and in Clyne we'd get a versatile full back who can play on either side, pacey and good going forward, and solid in defence. Still yong n lernin too.
