Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Read my post again. At the end of the coming season, during which he will have fully proven himself, I have no doubt whatsoever we will be sitting down with Adnan and renegotiating his deal.

You lot are hysterical.

Well yes but that should go without saying really, football is a performance business so if Adnan plays every game to a similar level as Shaw has been I'm sure he will get offered a new deal.

He was.
Awww... look how he is holding the trophies, he doesn't let them slip.

I've not really watched much of Luke Shaw despite us being linked with him constantly throughout the season. What are is qualities? Is he praised for his defensive capabilities or is he a fantastic attacking full back or both?

I've watched Southampton play around 8 times this season and I can say that he's very good while defending and he's also decent on the ball and his distribution is also quite good but he's mostly lauded for his defensive qualities rather than his attacking talent as far as I can tell. His positioning and defensive capabilities are very advanced even when compared with much older fullbacks.

I don't think he was. One of my mates who is a Liverpool fan has read his autobiography. Apparently as a youngster went to both Everton and Liverpool games with different sections of his family. He joined Liverpool at a young age like 7 or something and since then he's swung in favour of Liverpool. He may be lying but it is an explanation as to why there's a picture of him as a kid in an Everton shirt.

Gerrard's uncle(?) took him out one day and got that picture taken. Gerrard's dad wasn't happy about it.

My cousin has a kid with a Liverpool fan and she's converted to the dark side. When her daughter was a baby, the United fan side of the family put a little scarf and shirt on her and took a picture.

They key to sign Shaw is probably reassuring him that he's taking Evra's spot, full term. Many best LB's would take this job in a matter of seconds.

It's an epic offer for a youngster who's aware that he can play in Manchester United even close to the year 2030.

Hard to say 'no' as United already treating him like an adult and fully valuable footballer.

You know all too well that we cannot let that happen.

I want to trust that Adnan appreciates what he has. The idea that it would upset him or his agent isn't our concern.

Some of the Southampton fans on their forum think £27 isn't enough, one of 'em wanted £27 million plus Welbeck! :wenger:

Been lurking on some Southampton forums, they realistically expect us to include the likes of Kagawa and Welbeck in the deal, like they'd be happy to play for The Saints

They can help themselves to Young and Cleverley for free though. Good will freebies.

Southampton will surely reject it? They reject it and we will come back with more.
£27 million is a lot of money for Southampton, they may haggle an extra couple of million, but I'm pretty sure they're £30 million in debt, so they can't afford to reject an offer of this magnitude really.

Doubt it, all the signs point to the deal being worked on for a while now and just waiting for our match with them to be done for the official bid to be made public. Seems very similar to the mata transfer really.

How much more do we need to up the bid by to get them to take Anderson off our hands as well?

Complete guess on my part but I wonder whether they have come to an agreement of sorts on the £27m figure and it's a case of agreeing how it is structured with us obviously wanting as much down to incentives and them as much as possible up front.

I can't believe people are wasting space banging on about how his salary will upset other players, it's such bollocks.

I'm pretty sure every one of our squad loves seeing the money going up with every new signing, knowing that it means that when it comes round to their turn to negotiate a new contract then as long as they've been putting in the performances they are laugyhing all the way to the bank. The idea of them suddenly getting into a strop because of what somebody else is earning is just preposterous.

Indeed. On top of that, they will know from their own experience that the figures being banded around have been pulled out of the arse of one journalist or another.

£27m and £100/wk for an 18 year old is a lot, mate. It's a huge gamble. However, the cost would be justified if he had a long career with us and helps us win trophies during that time.

I would have preferred a more experienced player. However, the chance to acquire one of the very few top English talents out there, in an off season where we'll possibly lose a few British players, makes me happy.
I don't see how it's a huge gamble though. He's had 2 seasons in the premier leauge

I agree. Funny how the bid has broken straight after the match. A few journo's have been confident this has been done for a while too.

They might reject this bid but anything over £30m, they would be stone mad not to accept.
They would be mad not to accept £27m to be honest.

People may be looking at the £27m transfer fee and say it's too much for an 18 year old left back but if he's as good for us as he's been for Southampton, those £27m would become good value for money in less than 5 years let alone 10!

I actually agree that we shouldn't worry too much about his salary, but surely the bolded bit is exactly what those people who are worrying are concerned about? Every time we give a player a higher salary than might be expected, everyone else is going to want a higher salary when they sign/re-sign. That's the whole point of wage structures.

But as I say, I don't think £100k/wk will exceed ours. People are thinking of him as a young signing with potential, a Zaha or Smalling type of signing. But the reality is that we'd be bringing him in as a default first XI starter, and that's what we'll be paying him for. £100m is about right for that.

Especially for a fullback. Ludicrous fee to pay but at least that's LB sorted for a decade or more (as long has he remains fit).

Much as I find footballers' salaries disgusting, I don't worry about it in the sense of us somehow coming out worse out of this sort of thing. In an ideal world, they all get paid way less, the fans get charged way less etc, but within the context of modern football I'm not concerned if we're paying them all top dollar.

Always liked the notion of professional athletes being paid a set wage based on years of service, with an annual increase of xx percent, and incentives tied in based on both club and individual performances. A dream scenario if you will.

Martin Samuel doesn't usually do transfer rumours right?

Safe to say Shaw is coming here then.

Only the Mail and The Mirror so far saying it's agreed. Others just saying a bid has been made. Only time will tell.

They`re said to have been interested in Buttner. 25 + Buttner would make sense for everyone. They can spend a third of that bumping up Pochettino`s salary to get him to stay and a good left-back to compete with Buttner and use the rest on the rock of a CB they badly need to make the step, and the extra attacker they need (2 when Lallana goes) to go with Rodriguez and Lambert.

if true we submit a bid, hope we can conclude this deal as soon as possible, and that's before shaw joins england world cup training camp.

I am only believing it because it is Martin Samuel. He, as far as I'm aware, doesn't talk shit with regards to transfers etc.
