Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

It's depressing that Moyes shelled this amount on afro man. I wonder if he'll be stupid enough to pay it again and take him back when he's at his new club. I wouldn't put it past him.

I am pretty sure he was making a joke.
Hard to tell here. Some poster I saw making a big deal a few weeks ago when Shaw apparently followed Phil Neville on twitter and took it as he's a certainty for us now.

As I'm Southampton based, I feel sorry for Saints - Lallana probably off, Shaw probably off, and maybe the manager too. Saints have had such great players down the years, if they could have kept hold of them, they'd have been challenging for honours.

Liverpool fans reckon they are signing Moreno, worried he could be a much better deal.

Aye, that's what the "in the knows" are saying at the mo. Would be happy with him, but would prefer Shaw. I really like where we're going with this British core of ours. I want Rodriguez over both as I've seen him a couple of times this season and in both games he's looked boss and he's been earning rave reviews from elsewhere.

He may end up failing to live up to his hype and revert to become just a simple young english leftback that isn't anywhere near the best in the world ( a bit like Anderson or Nani failled to live up to their hype) in that case he could be here for a long time or he could be sold to some other Pl team and he wouldn't have been worth the £30m investment.

He may end up living up to his hype and become the best lefback in the world, in which case no doubt he'll have Real Madrid all over him in a couple of years and we'll have to see how much we'll get for him to decide if he was worth the £30m or not. Or he might decide to feck us over when his contract is running out and decide to ditch us for his boyhood club chelsea.

There are many scenario thinkable were he wouldn't stay here for his entire career, no certainty about that at 18 years old. Just as you don't have a certainty that he'll become the best leftback in the world (in fact I don't think he'll ever be because Alaba clearly is). But I do know one thing for sure, just being english doesn't warrant £10m more in the price tag.

I think if anyone genuinely thinks they have an accurate grasp of the market value of an individual footballers in top level footballer they're absolutely barking mad. All we know is that £27m is a lot of money. That's as far as it goes. We don't know how it'll affect our budget. We don't know how much other players at a similar level would go for if we were to go for them. We don't know whether he's "worth" it. Premier League football clubs operate in a different stratosphere to ourselves. My company works with a handful of PL clubs (Southmapton being one of them) and those who work with these clients all say the same thing - you can't compare it to normal business because their decision-making processes just aren't the same. The fact that some of these businesses can operate on a loss and think nothing of it tells you that straight away. So I really have no interest in the financial side of these deals and I don't know why fans now see it as one of the core parts of being a fan - unless you work within it you won't understand it and it's probably painfully dull even if you did. It's not one of the captivating parts of being a football fan and I don't see why it's something that should be a core part of football discussion. Sure, fans have always had a laugh at the big money flops like Mark Hateley and Andy Carroll and talked about the record breaking deals Denis Law and Gareth Bale, but caring about the minutiae of every single potential transfer? That's too much, for me.

This idea that Shaw has only been good for one season is mental by the way. This thread was made almost 18 months ago when many were very impressed by him. He has looked completely at home in the PL since day one. It's worth baring in mind that he never even played a game in the Championship. Not one. He just walked straight into the Premier League and barely put a foot wrong in 25 appearances last season and this season he's stepped up to be quite possibly the best fullback in the league. It has been a natural progression rather than one standout season. He would be perfect for us.

Southampton will want more than 27, just my feeling on the issue. I'd love, love, love to have him here.

They will spend plenty of money this summer in response.

It does stink that they're losing their best players, but hopefully they'll be able to reinvest the £42m they make from these deals and push on.

We are going to look like tits if it gets rejected and it ends up being another saga like last season. I'd love him here though, he is going to be world class.

If Southampton get in the region of 50-55m for Shaw and Lallana, I think they will be happy with that.

They will easily get a decent left back for a decent price. Lallana would be replaceable from somebody in Europe, and they would have plenty of money to spare, on top of any budget they had before hand.
They may weaken, but overall, if they spend wisely, they will definitely improve overall

In fairness, he was probably involved in getting this one to whatever stage it is or isn't at.

Do you lot think Van Gaal gave the go ahead on this one or that it's such a no brainer, you just bought him without a managers say so.

LVG will be done tomorrow some are saying. I'd think he'd have been asked.

My mistake you were right it seems that people are actually taking it seriously.

Manchester United make £27 million bid for Southampton and England left back Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw could become one of the most expensive teenagers in history after Manchester United table a £27 million offer for the left back
By Jeremy Wilson, and John Percy

Luke Shaw is on the brink of becoming one of the most expensive teenagers and full-backs in football history after Manchester United last night tabled a £27 million bid to Southampton on Sunday night.

United are determined to rebuild their squad after their worst ever Premier League season and, with Louis van Gaal's appointment as manager now imminent, they have moved to make Shaw their first summer signing.

There is also interest in Shaw from Manchester City and Chelsea but, with Uefa's Financial Fair-play regulations beginning to bite, also a reluctance from these clubs to pay beyond £25 million for a left-back.

The most expensive full-back in football is Dani Alves, who cost Barcelona £29 million, while Wayne Rooney was the most expensive teenager in football when he joined Manchester United in 2004 for £26.5 million.

Shaw was again outstanding on Sunday as Southampton held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw and it appeared significant that both he and Adam Lallana should be substituted and then linger as they left the pitch to acknowledge all four corners of the ground.

To be honest the stats I was referring to I'd seen at a glance. Now looking into it, I guess what I'd seen is a little skewed because Evra has the extra CL games, but regardless his are better:
Evra - 3 goals and 5 assists in all competitions.
Shaw - 1 assist (I thought I'd seen it was 2, but seems to be 1 wherever I look)

I stumbled across this as well:

Thanks, that's interesting. My oppinion on Evra is based on the fact that he rarely hits a good cross while in good position, while I saw many good crosses from Shaw (not only today of course). Evra is very good at keeping possession though.
Anyway, I'm sure Evra's offensive contribution won't be missed.

The thing is I don't think Shaw will be a huge loss to them even if they didn't replace him at all. They already have Clyne who has played very well at left back plenty of times and Calum Chambers has just started to break into the team this season so they essentially have a ready-made replacement right there.

Some on the saints forum are saying it might be Cortese planting stories. Not sure how that makes sense.

Can't get excited until I know Chelsea are 100% out of the picture.

Luis from Atleti doesn't seem like the type of player Chelsea would buy. He's 29 years old and surely only has a few seasons left at the top. The exact opposite of the type of player they've bought recently.

Its great getting in early, a team like Southampton are resigned to losing their top talent but won't allow their team to be completely broken up in 1 window. Could well mean they reject bids from other teams for other players, Liverpool for Lallana for example

Not the opposite of the type of player Mourinho buys, though. He normally goes for experienced, established players.

As for is this on....I think so.

Been a lot of talk for such a long time. I just think they bid may have been made. agreement struck, before the match even kicked off.
Taking him off with time left, and now a bid.
It all seems to fall into place

Matt Targett looks a good prospect as well and is highly rated by Southampton

Whether he goes to us, Chelsea or another top club, the lad wants to leave. Surely Southampton can't hold on to him for next season. He'd want it settled before the WC as well.
