£30m is utter madness, this guy better becomes the best leftback in the world, remain here for the rest of his career and becomes a leading figure on the pitch for that kind of money to make any sense at all.

In his current form as leftback he is worth about £12m £15m. Add to that his potential, seeing as he is only 18, and a figure in the neighbourhood of £20m would be the maximum anyone should be paying for him. Even with the english tax on top of that we're still paying way too much for him, and I really think we shouldn't ever be paying the english tax anymore, we paid it over Smalling, Jones and Young in the last couple of years and none of them have been worth it. We shouldn't be buying players just because they are english...its bad business.

It is also not just the transfer fee, it is the wages aswell. £100k per week for a 18 year old leftback, that is unheard off, absolutley ridiculous. Januzaj in my eyes is a far bigger talent and he is only earning £60 k per week. If you know Chelsea withdraws because they think the wages being offered is silly money, than you know it is silly money. This just reeks of the same kinda mistake we made with Young, seems like we justed wanted him because he was English and there was a bit of a hype about him, now we are stuck with a useless player earning £120.000. Only Young is an experienced multifunctional winger while Shaw is an unproven leftback. If he doesn't fulfil his hype we'll be stuck with one of highest earning leftbacks in the world for years. Even if he does fulfil his hype, he'll have to renegotiate his contract a couple of times in his career, what kind of wages will he be on by the time he is 28, similar to Rooney or what ? It is one thing paying such fees and wages for strikers or midfielders that really make the difference in the team, it is another thing to be paying it for a leftback.

We could be getting Coentrao or Moreno for a fraction of that money and Ricardo Rodriguez would be even cheaper and would also do a fine job for us there. But we have to go and be silly and spend bonkers on an 18 year old that has had a encouraging season or 2 in the PL at Souton. Madness, we're taking a massive risk with this and I don't know with all the other positions in the team that need to be strenghtend if that is wise.

Bringing in an 18 year old left back is just what this team needs. De Gea (23), Shaw (18), Jones (22), Smalling (24) and Rafael (23) has the makings of a brilliant unit in 18 months or so and could be the backbone of our side for the next 5 years. Along with Januzaj (19), Mata (25) and Kagawa (25) we've got plenty of youth to rebuild this side. We just need that midfielder or two to knit this all together and we could be playing brilliant football with a vibrant young team.

Kolarov cost £19m at 25. A better left back at 18 for just £10m more doesn't sound like a disaster to me.

It is a huge risk but he's really talented. I think he has the potential to be one of the best left backs in the world for atleast the next 10-12 years.

If he does fulfill this potential then he'll be worth it. But it is a huge risk no question.

Financially it's a risk this club can take. We've been in a coma for too long, saving transfer funds for whatever it was.

Time to spend epic money and finally enjoy top football from a team packed with depth and talent... and soon, hopefully world class manager.

Was going to reference Kolorov as well, even if it was a City price. Baines was being quoted at above £20m as well. It'll no doubt be broken down with add-ons depending on success, too.

Why is Kolarov being referenced? City overpaid as they always do and he isn't worth near it. I'm not sure how his prices relates to Shaws. We could compare Azpilicuetas price, or Evras.

Thing is, even if he doesn't work out quite as well as we hope we could still sell him for a good price as he'd still have his peak years ahead of him.

We definitely need to look towards a new generation of players. The core of the 06-13 Fergie side is slowly dying out - Scholes retired, Giggs an OAP, Vidic gone, Rio possibly not staying, Evra regressing, Carrick regressing.

So far the only player we've properly replaced is Edwin van der Sar. I think Luke Shaw coming in is absolutely spot on, but if Rio leaves too (which I believe he should) it's absolutely vital that we buy a centre back too and someone close to the peak of his powers rather than a baby (such as when we first brought in Jones) or an oldie.

Delighted if we get Shaw though - although unless the club knows something we don't I do question his reasons for closing a deal (if it's true) whilst we are managerless. Money talks doesn't it?

Exactly. And Barca paid almost 30m for Alves when he was 25 and Madrid paid 27m for Ramos when he was only 19. I doubt either set of fans think it was bad business.

City overpaid for Kolarov because Madrid (among others) were interested in him. We'll be overpaying for Shaw because Chelsea are all over him and he's a boyhood Chelsea fan.

Does anyone think we overpaid for Rooney?

Is there any actual respectable journalist reporting that we are in for him? I assumed our link was based on Cole leaving and him being a Chelsea fan. Most speculation was before Azpilicueta switched seamlessly to Left Back.
Not anymore they certainly don't. I'm sure many had reservations at the time though.

I don't think Shaw is worth £30 million. He is clearly a great prospect but I'm not convinced he's a must buy, other than the fact he is English. I think there is better alternatives such as Coentrao or Rodriquez.

While I would love Shaw here and wouldn't mind us overpaying to get him here, I certainly can't say we can't find players of similar quality for a fraction of the price. Players with just as much potential as him, and would also be a viable long term asset to us.

The Guardian reported that our 30m offer and wage incentive is what made Chelsea pull out of the deal. http://www.theguardian.com/football...d-beat-chelsea-luke-shaw-transfer-david-moyes

Why is it such a massive risk?

The absolute worst case scenario is he flops, we sell him for cheap or he goes on a free at the end of his contract. And what? That's going to put us in financial ruin?

How much would Rodriguez cost? Probably at least £15 million because it's us. So we're paying twice that for a player who's proved he can cut it in the PL already at age 18.

If anything we're taking the safer option. There is risk in any transfer and if you want to build a team of the best players in the world you have take risks on up and coming players like Shaw. We did it with Rio, we did it with Rooney. Those worked. We also did it with some players and it didn't work but that's life.

Why bring Young into it? Ok, so we bought a player once who turned out to be shit. We can't worry about that every time we want to sign an English player.

I think 30m for Luke Shaw is abit ludicrous tbh. He's been brilliant this season dont get me wrong and could possibly be on that plane to Brazil but he's 18 years of age at the end of the day. United has already got a young left back as it is, id be safer if united get themselves a more experience LB like Fabio Coentrao.

Do we have a good prospect coming through then?

Or are you referring to Buttner?

Players of his age group? I doubt it man, Shaw in my opinion is the most talented young left back out there. Alberto moreno would be a good shout but he is not as good in my opinion. Shaw is evidently quality and will only improve, a very steep price, I agree but he will be worth it in the end.

I don't think Chelsea would be in the running for him anywhere near that price. Especially with the emergence of Azpilicueta in the LB role. They are trying to stay within the limits of FFP and have other priorities in striking position, midfield and central defense.

That's steep but obviously a result of the fact that Southampton know they're sitting on a gold mine.

Will be the best LB in the league for the next 14 years, so I'd say it's a decent deal.

I'd sooner see us spank £30m on Shaw than £60m on Cavani. At least we sort of need Shaw.

Is the Guardian meant to be reliable?

Depends who it is. I think it was Jamie Jackson who reported the Shaw story yesterday. He was convinced we were signing Thiago last year but not sure how reliable he is in general. Daniel Taylor along with Mark Ogden (Telegraph) and James Ducker (Times) is one of the most reliable journalists in relation to United so if he was reporting it you can consider it to be as good as the truth.

Southhampton will hold out for that because they want to remove their debt this season and they don't want to lose their whole squad. If they lost Lallana and Shaw, or even more, they would be hard to replace. Replacing Shaw would be simple for them, imo.

Even the BBC are now reporting as fact that we had him lined up and ready only for Moyes to delay it, so it's quite possible he had information but it was just a bit old. Taylor did mention this Shaw deal in his Cavani story, but I suppose he could just be piggybacking it from Jackson.

I've never got why people get so caught up over the transfer value of players. "He's never worth that" or it's "over priced" if it was your money fair enough but it's not. Fair enough it is a lot of money but that's the way football is. The player is worth how much these teams value them at, in this case if the club think £30million is a fair value then that's the way it'll be. You always pay more for English talent if you're an English club, mainly because they're so marketable in this country (on top of football ability of course.)

Maybe its just me but I never really get that caught up about transfers, it just seems a bit of a thing to say between fans, how you got a massive flop and lost a load of money on them.

Can't see Chelsea paying £30 million for an 18-year old LB that's probably going to spend a lot of the time being back-up to Azpilicueta. He has more chance of coming to United than Chelsea, I feel.

Sigh. Four point eight million caftards have already pointed this out, but still: what's the point of a scouting network if we're just 'unearthing' gems on display in a window at Harrods/Bergdorf-Goodman/(insert region-appropriate high-end store here).

Just a minor grumble about the club potentially sacrificing its roots/giving up way too much transfer market leverage in a fit of overreaction.

People are moaning about the cost. Without the lure of Champions League football this is what we have to pay. But we would have spent less had we spent a bit more in preceding years. We didn't, so we now need to catch up. That means massive wonga.

I think they called it as well http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...-Southampton-left-back-Luke-Shaw-for-30m.html

They do have a young lad who plays left back waiting behind Shaw I think, his name escapes me though.

Good post, we've also got a few youth players to come into the team ( all going well). I'd love us to get Shaw.

Matt Targett, interestingly enough I've been doing some reading on a Saints forum and plenty of them seem to think he'll make the set up to replace Luke Shaw though some believe they won't sell Luke but we'll see won't we.

Another few names Southampton fans are speaking highly off are Harrison Reed and Josh Simms who they believe will both go on to represent England. All I can say is I'd love to know what they are feeding their kids down their, what ever it is it seems to work well for them.
