Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

What makes people so sure he would stay 10+ years? He might but when you're looking at how good/bad a deal is I think your first criteria should be over the length of the contract the player is signing. So, is Shaw for 27 million and whatever wages he'll be on over a 5 year period a good deal?
Depends how good he is really. He's not likely to go for nothing after 5 years.

It'll only be 5 years if he gets injured and needs a leg amputated.

If we sell him during that time it'll be for more money than we paid for him, unless he's terrible. Which he isnt.

I thought he was nailed on for Chelsea? That's what everyone seemed to have accepted a couple of months back, at least. They need a left-back just as much as we do, and they've also got both a better manager and a much better chance of challenging for top honours over the next few years. Plus they can offer him (and Southampton) more money. The one thing we have over them -- our history -- is rendered moot by the fact that, apparently, he's a boyhood Chelsea fan.

That was the commonly accepted wisdom a couple of months back, anyway. So what's happened to change that?

It never works like that. Shaw will pick the club which he thinks suits him better (think Ramsey choosing Arsenal). There are rare occasions when money isn't everything, perhaps he feels that we want him more having been after him for a longer period of time? Who knows. Ignore the childhood fan lark.

I get that the childhood fan thing isn't a major component of any decision -- I just put it in there to counteract the point about our history being better -- but pretty much every other facet of choosing which club to go to (the manager, playing time, chance of trophies, wages) also favours (or at least is equal at) Chelsea at the moment.

They do? Azpilicueta's been getting rave reviews this season and he's only 24.

If one of Shaw's main criteria is getting fast-tracked into first team football then United is the more obvious choice.

Who knows, perhaps Chelsea haven't even made a formal bid. To be frank, i'm not getting excited because there's plenty of time for other clubs to match/improve on the offer. But 27m is a huge bid, I'm surprised I must say.

You know, I'd forgotten all about Azpilicueta, to be honest. My bad. I was thinking of Ashley Cole and that young English kid they really rated but hasn't seemed to have developed as well as hoped (Betrand)?

Azpilicueta will be moving back to his natural position in right back before long.

The current set up has worked brilliantly and it depends on the futures of Terry and Luiz. If Terry is still around next season and Cole doesn't retire either, it seems odd to shell out so much on arguably one of their strongest positions and shift someone who's excelled on the right into the centre.

They have an aging Cole and a right back who has been shifted to left back(albeit performing brilliantly while doing so) don't think its one of their strongest positions at all, think both them and City will throw a lot of money at Southampton for him this summer.

I can see City throwing a tonne of money at a few Southampton players. They'll be trying to increase their home grown player quantity.

I'd pay that, would still be less than what Chelski played for Ashley Cole. We'd have England's future LB in our side for potentially many years to come, if he fulfills his potential he'll be a gem of a player for us too.

We paid £5 million plus a William Gallas who was threatening to score own goals.

Ivanovic has also been fantastic at right back, while Terry and Cahill have been one of the best partnerships in the country. Azplilicueta is a natural right back but this run on the left is probably the best spell of his career. If they got Shaw, one of those four wouldn't play very often, given Jose's tendency not to change things very often at the back.

I'm not ruling it out completely and I'm aware he's a Chelsea fan but I don't really think it's a weak spot at all for them.

I thought the fee was at £30million....I've clearly rewritten history in my mind.

If I remember Arsenal rejected £16 million from us so Gallas must have been valued pretty highly. The deal sounds incredibly good now though with hindsight.

Total balls up by Arsenal board, I've always been of the opinion that it was Fiszman putting Dein in his place. Personal point scoring over the club's interests.

would be surprised if we payed this much for a left-back if im honest, surely theres a better option in europe for cheaper, £30M is a lot of money for a left-back.

Not when you consider his age, £30m is a snip really. Next season he'd be 19 and potentially have 12-14 years at the top level. £30m is cheap.

I suppose, and it is an immediate area, it's going to be a strange transfer window, just right now I see players like Ginter in germany doing very well as a young CB he's quoted at £8-10M then Shaw is £30M as a LB

When Ginter gets attention Bayern will come a' knockin and then it'll be difficult to keep him. Not that English players cannot have their heads turned but few do when it comes to foreign clubs.

The fact he's English and playing domestically adds to the figure substantially, its just that simple and we all know it, clubs don't want to sell their British talent because frankly, its rather scarce at present, Milner cost about 24million didnt he? if he was from Iceland and abroad he'd have cost City about 6.5mill max.

Edit, still doesn't mean he couldn't be a great buy in the longrun, even at an inflated "British price"

I just see it as a potential £20m we could spend elsewhere

Shaw should be a big, big target for us this summer. The kid is golden and he is going to be a brilliant player. I don't personally give a toss what we would end up paying for him. This is the sort of player we need to be signing, and even more so given that our rivals will all be after him.

Unless we're constrained by the need to keep up our home grown quota (which we may be), wouldn't Rodriguez from Wolfsburg actually make a lot more sense than Shaw? Much more developed player, better crosser of the ball, and still only 21.

I'd imagine he'll cost more too and interest all the rich clubs

I just hope we don't put all of our eggs in one basket and do a Baines. With Evra leaving our only natural fullback options are Buttner and Rafael and I really wouldn't feel comfortable going into the next season with just those 2.

What happened to the rumors about Evra signing an one year extension?

There were no such rumours. The rumour was that the club had an option of giving him a one year extension since he had played a certain number of games this season. There are other rumours about him joining Inter because his wife wants to move.

Chelsea seem to be going out all for a striker as their main summer mission, if they even seem to be considering selling Oscar and Hazard to fund it (which I can't believe!).

Hopefully they might not even be in this race.

Got him £27m 85k a week in the papers tomorrow. Been a huge admirer of this kid and have been watching Southampton just to scout him. He'll eventually be the best left back in the world.

I believe the Mirror will be running it.

Ya just searched on twitter and that seems to be the case. Apparently Andy Mitten is saying the same. He has very close links at United so there could be something in it. We certainly seem to have been linked with Shaw an awful lot the last few weeks.
