Never been impressed. Wouldn't want him for that price. Coentrao for me.

I'm not an expert on him but I've seen him a few times, looks quite solid and can get forward, considering hes like...19? or something you have to say the potential is there.
Ideally I'd love to bring him in and have him become a 10+ year legend but considering all the holes we have to fill Coentrao may represent better value and immediate results.
Saying that he's hardly played any football for a couple of years...

Sounds a mental high price, but that seems the way it's going.

Like others have said, you have to think he could be the answer in that positions for 10-15 years. So would work out a good price in the end.

Surely a big question mark about whether an 18/19year old can come straight in and play every week for us though. Buttner would surely have to help ease him in.

Plays every week for Southampton and does it thrice as well as Buttner. Wouldnt be a slight concern

If we rate him that highly, we shouldnt baulk at the price. Whoever gets him and moulds him properly gets 13-14yrs of service. 27mil is very steep but considering his age, I wouldnt mind us paying that.

Honestly think we could do with both him and Coentrao given our injury struggles at the back. The latter can play on the right and in midfield and given our injury struggles at the back both would be useful

How good is Shaw then?

He doesn't strike me as the free flowing wing-back type. He only has 3 assists this season in all comps.

Looks like a proper full back who can actually defend, rather than being a converted winger like a lot of the continental players.

Looked very impressive every time I've seen him - especially given his age. Looks mature beyond his years - the sign of a good player.

Don't have any issues with the price. Would sort out our left back position for the next decade or so.

He will more than likely be a top quality full back for 10-12 years. A brilliant signing for whoever snaps him up.

27m is silly money, but, even though we have other areas to address with a lesser kitty, I'd hope we matched such an offer if soton accepted it.

We'd no doubt get slaughtered by the media/other fans for signing an 18 year old left back for £27m, but I (and many others) rate this guy so highly, I'd be over the moon if we could get him.

Would be worth it just to stop Chelsea/Liverpool/City getting him. And would be great for England too, with Jones, Smalling and Shaw playing together for the next 10 years.

I'm a bit worried we're going to spend crazy money on Shaw and Barkley and get burned by English players not living up to their hype.

I feel £27m for Shaw is pretty silly money. I know the football landscape has changed significantly...but Rooney cost us £25m, and he was triple the talent Shaw is. Coentrao for 10-15 is a far safer bet.

At £27m, we'd make him the most expensive full-back in the history of the game. Alves and Contreao being 2nd and 3rd most behind.

That's insanity, and the premium we're going to be slapped around with all summer for no longer being a CL side.

Shaw's a good player, and may well go on to be a great player, but for £27m, you're moving into the realm of what you'd expect to play for an all-time great. No-one can say whether he'll become that or if it's his trajectory, but for that price, it better be!

I'd agree normally as City spent around £100m and got Lescott Barry Rodwell and Milner and all way overpriced and under achieved for their fees. So far the last 5 English we signed were Jones Smalling Young Zaha Powell and none of these are regulars and for their fees been great value to date. So it's a tricky balance but there is always the chance we could get a Rio Cole or Lampard here and Shaw and RB look pretty special types but they should be the fairy dust on top of us signing 3-4 proven internationals.

Bryan Robson costed us 1.5m. Times changes, fee changes.

The thing about cost... I think United have bigger problems right now.

Won't complain if we'll sign him.

Times haven't changed that much since Chelsea got Dave for 7 mil in 2012, an excellent young full back who had already proven himself in La Liga and Ligue 1. 27m is crazy money.

Crazy fee but if we are to believe the rumours, there are a few clubs after him, which will always drive the price up. Being British will bump it up further.
Wouldn't be fussed if we paid that for him. I think any club buying him will have to pay it.
We desperately need a good LB - is it too early to be relying on Shaw next season though?

I invite you to find a quality and young British full back for 7m.

I literally don't care how much we pay for players. Our commercial income pays for all of it. Silly fake money in a different world.

Looks decent though this lad. Would ideally get two left backs this summer.

And had injury problems at Marseille

Shaw and Coentrao is the dream

The price is what the market will bear. I'd be amazed if they're not able to get comfortably more than £20m. He has fantastic potential and is at an age where he still has plenty of room for development. Plus he's English, which always adds on a premium. If he trains on as looks likely he'd be a brilliant investment, even if paying that much for a full back seems daft.

Yeah certainly seems like two players we've been linked with who could come in and do a job.

We have a lot of games (hopefully still in Europe next year) and Coentrao could cover other positions.

I hope to see 3/4 new defenders this summer hopefully

The lad is the real deal. Cole's successor and will probably be as good as Cole and get 100 caps in his career. £27m is a lot now but over the next 10 years or so it would be peanuts. We paid this money for Rio and Rooney and they've given us great value.

And? Do we need the extra home grown/English players? We have Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones, Carrick, Cleverley, Welbeck, Rooney, Januzaj, Zaha, Powell, Lingard, M Keane, W. Keane and more to fulfill the HG/English requirements. There is no pressing need to spunk 30m on an English fullback.

Why do so many people still rate Coentrao considering that he failed to become a starter under two managers for Real now?

Because Marcelo's a top LB and not starting over him is no slight on Coentrao?

Because he's behind Marcelo? Isco, Jese, Morata, Varane, Coentrao, Illaramendi and Khedira all don't start for Real if everyone's fit but all of them except Morata would improve us considerably.

We need one left back. Just keep Evra.

With us playing less games next season, don't see the point of spending big on two left backs.

Yeah just the problem with Coentrao is that the last good game I can remember from him was about two years ago. He was decent yesterday but probably the least impressive Real player on the field. Imo he offers very little in terms of improving our squad and I'd rather keep Evra for another year or two then get him if I'm honest. Of course Evra might not want to stay so we might have to go for another player but Coentrao is really a player I only think we should consider if he was available for a very low fee.

The figure being branded about is 15mil. Very good price for someone of his quality.

If we sign Coentrao, then I hope we use him as a left winger rather than a left back.
