He didn't look at £30m player atall but then again it was his first start for England. Some glimpses he looked classy.Didn't notice him much last night. Didn't seem to have much time on the ball and Ecuador seemed to concentrate on targeting Milner at RB with is understandable.
Not sure if already posted :
Andy Mitten: "Manchester United is confident L.Shaw will be coming to Manchester United and his parent have preference for #MUFC move also."
I can't see how Smalling can be blamed at all for that goal, if he positioned himself any further back then Amy near post ball and we'd be talking about how far back he was. It was a terrific cross and its the of the full back to sweep in that instance.
There's massive exaggeration on here surrounding Valencia's game and that includes the supposed number of times he apparently hits players shins with the ball. You're just further contributing to this by saying he rarely gets crosses into the box, that's nonsense.Have you been asleep for two years? Even my missus expressed surprise and slight annoyance when twice in a row Valencia put in crosses which made no contact whatsoever with the shins of the defender standing 2 feet in front of him.

Defending is secondary to what a full-back does anyway. Has been for years.
Having watched Milner the other night (and with the promise of Johnson to come) you can't really trot out that old crap.Defending is secondary to what a full-back does anyway. Has been for years.
Not really - you tend now to have one defending full back and the other has more license to roam. Sagna defended for us, whilst Gibbs went forward more often. The same is replicated across many clubs.
And to illustrate that when United and Barcelona were at their peaks over the last 5-7 years they had Evra/Alves and Abidal/Neville/Brown/O'Shea. Since Barcelona brought in Alba to play opposite Alves and Rafael became a regular opposite Evra the two defences have just gotten worse and worse. It's not rocket science - if you play two poor defenders in a back four you're not going to have a strong defence. Fullbacks still need to defend.
He was fecking awful. Stood off one the most predictable wingers he'll meet at every turn. He even opened up the right channel at times in fear of Valencia cutting in on his left (LOLZ). The few times he ventured forwards he either wasted it or played it very safe.
Understandable for a teenager, but not for a 30m touted one.

Dunno where all this 'Shaw was crap for England' the other night is coming from. I thought he was effective enough and did ok. Valencia had a good game, and when he does there isn't many left backs that can cope with him. It's not as if Valencia bamboozled him at every attempt and made him look silly.
Rewatch the game and compare Shaws performance to the lad who replaced him after an hour. Shaw did fine, that Flannigan was totally ineffective and looked out of his depth and never got to grips with the game.
But you can see this is not a ringing endorsement for a £30m player? That is the point really isnt it? Its all relative.I thought he was effective enough and did ok.

Yeah lets not break an 18 year olds career on one bad game, regardless of how much he is valued, just like you shouldnt make his career
on shutting down another talented youngster.

No surprise it was a Liverpool fan on here that labelled his performance 'fecking awful'.
Absolutely, Im not disputing that. Im all for signing him as well. Bring it on.I guess it's the going rate if you consider the potential, longevity, and 'English tax'. The lad has all the ingredients to become one of the best imo. If the bean counters give the thumbs up, and it means beating Chelsea, City, Liverpool ect to a future star then I'm all for it.
It is a lot of money, but so was Ferdinand and Rooney at the time.

BUT. If you are in the market for a player for £30m and then you watch him play for England and "he was effective enough and did OK", it gives you pause. You say, OK it was an international and there is often a period of adjustment with that: fine. But at the same time you might hope for a bit more. Some players take to international football like a fish to water. At the other end of the scale, some find it harder to adjust - to international football, as well as to life at Man United.
All Im saying is its hardly surprising that people will comment, and even possibly overreact, to a fairly average display for a player who is about to become one of the most expensive defenders ever.
The lads 18 and making his full debut for his country against a right winger, who on his day makes even the very best left backs look silly. Can't really fault him for not being perfect. As I see it he will get better and better the more he grows as a player. To me he looks like he's one of those players in the same mould as Irwin. He will never be the most spectacular but he is always solid and effective. To me players like that are priceless.

Or over everybodys head and out if play near the corner flag .Valencia gets plenty of crosses in. The only problem is most of them are into the crowd and not into the box.

sure but we know international football is its own can of worms. Some players perform better at international level than they do at some clubs or vice versa. Hate to use this example to illustrate what I'm saying but KlebersonIn which case him being a bit meh against Ecuador wasnt about him being young and new to international football, it was something else. Either way, and again: you can see why people are scrutinising him and would hope for more from a £30m player.
