Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

No it wouldn't - this is about what's best for Shaw long-term not about what's best for Man Utd. Jones would have been better off spending another year or two at Blackburn polishing his game at CB instead of playing utility boy for you.

You cant see the difference between the 2 cases?

Both sides are wrong. Players like Jones and Shaw would be best off at Europa level clubs where they will get 35 starts a year when healthy, but also decent coaching and teammates and not just be defending all game.

Jones would have been best off the past 2 or 3 seasons at a club like Southampton (where he would have beaten out Yoshida and Fonte).

Oxlade could have been at Everton as the first choice right-winger before Mirallas emerged over Pienaar and then the left-winger after.

Shaw would be best off at Spurs, surely, with his old coach and only Danny Rose to beat out at LB.

Jones has been a consistent starter whenever fit since he joined the club the problem is he has rarely been fit. And I really hate this notion that players should only play in their natural positions. Jones probably learned things in midfield and FB that will make him a better CB down the line.

Europa league level club : Erm, no but hopefully next year :D
35 starts a year: Check
Decent coaching: Check
Not defending all game: Check

Unlike Jones, Shaw doesnt have to fight anyone for his place here. If he comes, he slots right in as a starter.

He has to fight with Evra next year. It wouldn`t shock me if Evra`s form improves if he can stop playing every damn game. A chart just came out of most minutes played by players going to the 2014 WC over the last few years and Evra was absurdly high.

If he comes, he'l pretty much certainly be 1st choice with Evra as back up. We wont be paying 27mil for him to keep him on the bench. At worst, he'l get half the game time which even without CL football, will be close to 25 games. Its pretty much a perfect move for him. Money, top club, game time, everything.

Evra has skated by without giving any thought to defensive responsibilities, why would he change now? Fortunately he's still good going forward so he has something to offer and something to help teach the likes of Shaw.

I agree with this. He's started almost every game when he's been fit and the experience in different possitions will only hold him in good stead when he gets settled at CB. He most likely will play most of his games there next season since we will probably wont have an excessive number of centre halves. Jones will be fine, he's still very young. People are acting as if we have ruined him.

Not really at fault per se. But could have done better. A bit flat footed I guess.

Had it been Evra they'd be up in arms, obviously.

Probably split 'fault' from all 3 defenders involved: Milner let the cross come in unchallenged, Smalling mistimed his jump and didn't touch the ball, and Shaw didn't follow his man.

Tbh Shaw has been pretty poor so far. Just a friendly and all that, but good lord for 30m...

I know what you mean, I'm also basing my entire opinion on the first 15 minutes of an international friendly.

The silver lining is playing against Shaw seems to be restoring Tony Vs confidence.

Smalling and Shaw both to blame positionally

Shaw was one of the worst out there. As bad as Milner.

Smalling and Shaw both to blame positionally
I can't see how Smalling can be blamed at all for that goal, if he positioned himself any further back then Amy near post ball and we'd be talking about how far back he was. It was a terrific cross and its the of the full back to sweep in that instance.

Only saw it once so unsure about Smalling, I was focused on Shaw and he should never allow a striker to be goalside of him, school boy error.

It was definitely Shaw's error for the goal. Just lost concentration on the cross, and let the striker get a run on him from the back post.

Thing's like that are going to happen though, he's not going to be perfect straight off the bat.

Shaw should have tracked the run but Smalling was poor - got caught under the ball. He makes too many errors like that.

I didn't think he was that bad. He made a slight mistake for the goal. Valencia was able to get two crosses in by knocking it up the wing and crossing it before Shaw could reach and block it - it wasn't as if he beat him all ends up or left him for dead numerous times. You normally expect Valencia to do that 3-4 times in a match against any full back anyway. The back-line overall was very shaky although it wasn't helped by the midfield leaving them completely isolated for most of the match. No idea how anyone could say he was worse than Milner who was beat numerous times and kept giving hospital passes to the players around him, which is quite understandable when it's abundantly clear that he's not a right back.

Said no one ever.

You don't think Valencia knocks it past his man and crosses it 3 or 4 times a match? Most of the problem with him stems from the fact that it's all he now does and 80% of the time the crosses are useless.

No I don't. 3-4 times would be a massive improvement, he never gets into the space behind his fullback and gives himself time to cross anymore.

Have you been asleep for two years? Even my missus expressed surprise and slight annoyance when twice in a row Valencia put in crosses which made no contact whatsoever with the shins of the defender standing 2 feet in front of him.

He runs past them 3-4 times and much more than that on a regular basis, then he looks up, stops, basically confirming the myth that men can't do more than one thing at a time, and gives the defender the chance to get a block in. Ridiculous really as he is faster than all of them - he made Alba look slow!

Did Shaw struggle with the pace of Valencia, or did he keep up with him?
He never once physically sped passed him by dribbling, but he did his usual trick of stopping and then accelerating off quickly and putting in a quick cross - something that's pretty hard to stop whoever you are.

When Milner tries that, it never works, so give Valencia some credit;) Valencia's pace and acceleration is immense; I just think that he's not good enough at using it anymore - he stops before he crosses the ball. Shaw is more than quick enough for most wingers though.
