Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Basically, Southampton can't believe what they've been offered for Lambert and thus accepted the bid thinking they'll never get a better offer.

Southampton are surely worried that they'll really struggle to attract a decent manager if they have sold off all their best players before appointing a manager. Selling a player like Lambert is not going to make the difference as far as any potential future manager is concerned. Whereas selling players like Lallana and Shaw will.

I'm still confident Shaw will move regardless. As far as we are concerned his value lies in his potential and to a lesser extent the fact he's English. We could sign a player like Coentrao, for example, who would make a better immediate impact, but wouldn't offer potentially 10-15 years of top class service.

From Southampton's point of view, Shaw hasn't exactly been the linchpin in their success over the past two seasons. A left back never is. He's solid and works well in their system, but his form from the last two seasons is replaceable. His potential isn't, but potential is always a risky game anyway. I'm sure they'll cash in on it while they can, and while we're desperate for a left back. I can't see his value increasing over the next few season anyway, so now is as good a time to sell as any.

If Shaw drags on I could see us going for Blind instead. Would cover LB and DM in one signing.

I can see Moyes being appointed as their manager and then persuades to Shaw to stay.

I'd say more he'd have to sell the idea of not selling him to the board.
I'd guess the player will want to join a top club, with a substantial pay increase, rather than stay at a team that isn't going to challenge for honors, nor offer him anywhere near the same salary. They can hold him to his contract but I think United's offer is too good to turn down. only way it'll fall down is if United get pissed off waiting & go after someone else.

So that is their reaction to £4m for one of the league's top goalscorers, but they don't feel the same about £27m for and 18 year-old full-back?

Wasn't it reported that Southampton finances are such that they need a lot of money?

I don't know, but I would have thought they were quite sound financially.

Over recent years, they've generally produced young talent and sold them on for a profit. Look at Walcott, Bale and Chamberlain as the prime examples, of course. They've also steadily climbed through the leagues, which will have generated ever-increasing TV and match day revenues. Further to that, they've got a solid fan-base and a fairly large stadium, which probably didn't need any upgrading or renovating whatsoever when they were promoted to the Premier League.

They've also managed to arrive into the top flight at a time when TV payments have gone through the roof, but also before establishing themselves as a long-term Premier League club. This means they probably don't spend nearly as much on wages as many of the clubs around them. I'd bet they spend significantly less than Spurs or Everton, for example.

He's hardly one of the leagues top scorers is he? 13 goals.

We should give them a take it or leave it offer with a deadline attached to it. We can't afford dragging this throughout the summer. They wont find anyone offering a better offer then us that's for sure.

It's probably just damage control. Hardly promising for the supporters if you've got no manager and 3 of your best players are gone.

Why the feck do they need to appoint a manager before selling shaw? They are going to sell him anyway for the prices quoted so what difference does it make.
Perhaps it gives the manager a little more sense of control if he's the one giving the final stamp of approval on the sale. If you come into the job and 3 players have been sold without your say so, it doesn't bode well for the future. Might even put managers off the job.

I doubt they'd be an attractive prospect to managers if they had sold all their best players before they arrived either. It'l probably happen anyway but it's more courteous of them to bring someone in before they ship everyone out.

I can't see us not signing Shaw at this stage. Surely it's just a matter of time.

Southhampton have a debt to cover and this is their best opportunity to do so, imo.

It's the 3rd most from anybody outside the top 4. Plus 15 the previous season makes him top 10 over two seasons.

I'd definitely call him one of the leagues top scorers.

I'm not claiming he's worth anything much more than £4m, due to his age, but the idea that that is somehow too good to turn down, but £27m for Shaw isn't is crazy. Lambert may or may not have much impact on Liverpool next season, but at £4m you can't say they are wasting money.

Koeman as their new manager would be a good thing, right? Dutch brothers in arms and all that. We could nab James Ward Prowse in a few years time, too.

Shaw isn't stupid.....he has seen Lambert go, Liverpool circling around Lallana....

If he had any doubts Before -it's gone now

Saying that he'll have 10 years of service for us doesn't necessarily mean he'd retire. Just may mean he'll move away. Impossible to say.

What I meant was if we can get 10 years minimum out of him, then I'd take it.

Okay.

Ten years would be a decent return, but if we sold him at 28, we'd get a lot of our money back. Probably the most accurate estimate of the transfer cost of a player is given by dividing the fee by the number of years left in the player's career at a high level. If Shaw can play at United level till he's 33, and we paid £30m, then cost per year on top of wages would be £30/(33-18) = £2m per year.

If we sold Rooney tomorrow, we'd get all our money back, so the cost per year of his transfer fee to Everton would be zero (or less than zero).

If I were Shaw or his dad I'd say stay at Soton for another year or two,

Makes so much sense does that. I'm sure he would develop so much better there than playing week in week out for United. Yes, much sense you make.

Think that's one looking for a response. Because going to a much bigger Club, whilst earning two, three, four times the money you're on now, and being a regular starter there makes no sense whatsoever for Shaw clearly.

So, looks like nothing will happen till the new manager comes in. Any clue who is being linked for the job ??
