Luke Shaw | Deal done! Almost...

Can someone enlighten me as to what an agreement in principle is.

Nvm used Google so he's signed for someone subject to a medical? Personal terms? I mean I know where I stand on this but it's interesting that betting is suspended before anything is announced.

I think we have the deal wrapped up.

Jamie Jackson has feck all insight.

Yeah it would really be annoying and disappointing if he ends up at Chelsea instead but come on guys, no one can actually be surprised if that happens? We offered a good amount but I think losing Luiz and Cole along with having so much cash to spend now, Chelsea will be in for him surely. United seem to be sending a fair few mixed signals out to journos the last few days though so who knows who we're confident of actually signing now.

It would be more disappointing if we didnt even go for him. If Chelsea outbid us there are several other left backs out there including Filipe Luis who Chelsea have been consistantly linked with. It would just be nice to have an English player who is going to be world class in his position

He made a massive offer in terms of fee and wages that many Utd fans thoyggr was way over the odds. What more do you want?
There is no confirmation of that, in reality we know feck all. All I know is we need some decent players to come in this season and we simply can not afford to have another horrific summer in regards to transfers.

Anyway, I take it we are not getting him so? Would not know any other decent young left backs out there, fairly disappointed with this news to be honest. We are making pure balls of this transfer window as predicted.

Alberto Moreno. 21 year old from Sevilla. Better than Shaw at the moment, and would cost half as much.

Rodriguez from Wolfsburg, a real class act, solid defender & better going forward than Shaw.

There are a few good alternatives, as there are for all positions we may look to strengthen. People get hung up on 1 player and it's all doom & gloom if deals are not done over night!

Not even the best young left back in la liga or the europa league this season.
Fair enough. I've watched him and rate him higher than Shaw. He's played in Europe and won the Europa league with Sevilla.

Exactly. There are quite a few options other than Shaw. The only reason i would take Shaw is because he will help with the homegrown rule because most of our other signings will be foreign players.

We currently has 13 (if I have counted correctly) Home grown-players in our squad, over the age of 21. So we don't have any problems at all there. Shouldn't be a priority signing HG-players.

I have been talking to some Southampton fans and they are having the theory that the hold up on the deal is a show by them to tell the fans that they are 'negotiating' and it is also a display for sponsors.

Go to his parents house everyday and make them make Luke sign the damn contract? Making his family feel very comfortable about the deal is bound to be a success.

Think Shaw is much better defensively.

Many of them won't be here for long. There are doubts on the future of Cleverley and Fletcher (feck even Rafael and Welbeck aren't completely safe). Withing three years I can see Carrick and probably even Rooney leaving. Young will definitely leave very soon. Did you discounted Rio and Giggs?

Jordi Alba played better in la liga and in europa. Moreno wasnt one of Sevilla's best players and was in and out of the team in the final stages of the europa league with Navarro preferred in both legs Vs. Valencia. Navarro was also preferred in one of the games Vs. Porto

He's good but Alba clearly had a better season. Hard to say if either are better than Shaw now, they certainly werent at 18. I think he's the best defender of the 3 without question and the most suited to our league

Moreno absolutely dipped in form from January onward. Nowhere near as complete defensively as Shaw who is a whole 3 years younger. People just like to chuck in names.

I hope you're right mate. Chelsea are very sneaky, look at how they signed Hazard after being linked with both Manchester clubs for so long! They came out of nowhere!
God I hope I'm right too! I have a feeling we'll have to wait until the end of the WC to find out. The only thing I'm holding onto is that when Jackson or whoever it was reported Shaw had stalled, the journalist close to Chelsea said he's still heading for United but after the WC.

Last season, Home Grown over 21:
Ben Amos
Rio Ferdinand
Rafael Da Silva
Fabio Da Silva
Jonny Evans
Chris Smalling
Ryan Giggs
Michael Carrick
Darren Fletcher
Ashley Young
Tom Cleverley
Wayne Rooney
Danny Welbeck
Federico Macheda

14 players last season. Rio, Fabio, Giggs and Macheda has since moved or retired. Jones, Zaha and Lingard are born before 01-01-1993 and will count has Home grown the coming season. That's 13 players at this very moment. You can register 25 players, not counting those born after 01-01-1993, they are on the B-list. In other words, we can have 12 foreign (and not home grown) right not, if we wish to register all our 13 home growns.

Not counted as Home grown last season:
David De Gea
Anders Lindegaard
Nemanja Vidic
Patrice Evra
Alexander Buttner
Anderson
Nani
Antonio Valencia
Shinji Kagawa
Marouane Fellaini
Javier Hernandez
Robin Van Persie

12 players. Vidic has moved since then, so we are now 11. The rest is still here, even if Anderson are pretty much gone (who ever wants him). Bebe are not counted in here either. If we wish to buy more foreign players than 1 we have to get rid of some players, either Home growns or foreigns.

Correct me if I'm wrong in all this...

So sky have suspended betting on this fella now.

A) Any stall has nothing to do with Evra.
I disagree. I think the connection is there, it's just not Shaw decided to consider his options because of Evra's deal. It's the other way around. Evra's has been offered deal when it became evident that Shaw transfer will be touch and go and not a sure bet.

I don't think there's much of correlation. If Shaw doesn't come it will be because the stars have aligned for him to move to Chelsea. Fan, LB becoming available, CL etc.

How many times does it need to be said that Evra had an option for an extra year in his contract, that he could decide to take up if he wanted to stay. He wasn't offered an extension, he took up a pre existing option of a further year.

And who exactly reported it? Goal.com? Not the most reliant media outlet really.
As far as i know under FIFA regulations unilateral contract option are frowned upon. In many cases outright illegal. So the way these extension work legally is that when certain criteria is met, both party have to agree to activate the clause. So in terms of decision making it was an normal contract extension.

Evra's contract has no bearing on Shaw's signing because we need cover at left back regardless and having an experienced player like Evra who can start for a run of games if Shaw dips in form or has an injury is a fantastic option to have. Evra playing 30+ games is not an asset any more, but Evra playing 15-20 games is a massive boost to the overall strength of the backline. Evra also is somebody that seems to be a real positive to the morale of the squad overall which is something that is hard to quantify but is evident in his attitude and comments about the club. It's also likely this makes Buttner expendable, which is fine since I'd rather have Evra as cover over him. Evra is also a physical freak and if he is okay with playing a reduced number of games he can play another 3-4 years.

Evra won't get up to 30 games if Shaw signs, but used judiciously, Evra can have a new lease of life with us and that has to be a good thing.
