Initially he was benched after the Brentford game.So a minor injury sidelines him for 2 months?
He’s had a tough 15 months or so. He was great before that but seemed to go right off track after the Euros. It is a mental thing with Shaw. He can’t focus. He can’t apply himself properly. Who knows why?
Where does he go from here? I think ETH is the perfect manager to make or break his career - he is uncompromising but fair which I think is what Shaw needs - he has to have the rocket up his backside and the arm around the shoulder at the same time. He’s 27 now, has at least 5 years left and some players just don’t click until their late 20s and that could be the case with Shaw. But he is walking a tightrope and I think if he doesn’t see the light under ETH, he never will.
What I would say is don’t give up on the lad. He can do it still. And nobody needs to worry - he’s not going to be getting any free passes whilst Malacia is in form.
Seconded. I’d rather Malacia put in 6/10, 7/10 every game than Shaw putting in 3,4,5/10 with the odd very good game 8/10. sorry for my odd use of measurementYou must be joking.
He dropped off a bit in the last month of the season, but was still good. Before that he'd been fantastic all season. A combination of him being that good and the other three or so competitors for the title having off seasons meant that Shaw was (quite clearly IMO) the best in the world that season. He regained that form for the Euro's as well. Was he great for the full season though?
Memory might be failing me here but he had a really great month of assists. Pretty much doubled his career assists or something in four week.
But I don't remember him being great in the final third all season.
YawnHe's had a free pass round here for 7 years. Let's have standards as a club again and get rid.
Yeah 1 world class season. All the other seasons he's just a very good left full who's much better with the ball than without. There's not much out there better than him imo. This is a fair assumption.
It’s all I see with Shaw; an anomaly of a single world class season.
All I want to find out is if he can do it again for Ten Hag - if not then Shaw’s is no use to us anymore.
Nah 5 or 6 good seasons. 1 amazing season.I’ve long since given up on understanding this hill to die on. One (1!) good season. Goodbye to him hopefully.
Of course he is right. Malacia is not clueless with the bal. On the other hand AWB is looking like the ball is burning his feet when he has it. The guy just doesn’t know what to do with it.I hope you’re right, and this is the Shaw thread so I don’t want to derail it.
Lots of people are posting this or something similar but he has had several decent seasons. Won our player of the year at least twice. If we are smart, we would look to sell him and get some money when he still has some value. Our scouting should look to get a another lb to compete with Malacia. 1 great season out of 8 plus is shambolic.
He was quite good in 18/19, a season when we were quite crap (finished 6th in the table). He was really good (probably best in the league) in 20/21, a season when we were quite good, and continued his great form in Euros. He was crap in the two seasons that followed his best seasons.Lots of people are posting this or something similar but he has had several decent seasons. Won our player of the year at least twice.
Correction- he was our Player of the Year in 2018-19 (Fernandes won it in Shaw’s best year).
I agree. I just don’t think it’s too late for him. A lot of people think he simply cannot change and they might be right but they might be wrong.Di Maria and Lukaku were considered as a flop by majority of this fanbase even though they contribute a respectable amount of G/A and we recoup almost all the fee we paid for them so in my books they were never a flop. It's player like Maguire and Shaw who are a flop. Guarantee we will struggle getting 30m for them combined.
A wise manager once said to a certain England midfielder who is now at besiktas that there are huge difference between a top player and top potential. Many players have a top potential ( example : ravel morrison , adnan januzaj ) but they don't automatically become top player without consistent work ethic and attitude both in and outside of the pitch. I think that's apply greatly for Shaw.
Say it enough times and it becomes fact. Why our fans would want to deliberately mislead as to how good Shaw is, is beyond me.Lots of people are posting this or something similar but he has had several decent seasons. Won our player of the year at least twice.

Ok let us revisit his time hereLots of people are posting this or something similar but he has had several decent seasons. Won our player of the year at least twice.

Nah 5 or 6 good seasons. 1 amazing season.
To be fair, in 17/18 Young actually started the season on fire with arguably the best form of his career, probably the best leftback in the league for the first half of the season. His form dropped off in the second half of the season but Jose was his usual self and refused to drop a player he liked for a player he didn't, despite any question of form.He was kept in bench by Ashley fecking Young of all people in the seasons prior to 18-19, averaging only 10 league games in his first four seasons (although his second season he had that very bad injury, but then in his fourth season he managed to play only 11 times in the league).
I agree he’s only had one great season. That’s pretty much the consensus even among the people who rate him.Ok let us revisit his time here
2014-15- Raw talent, but hardly special season. Average at best with some encouraging games. Played just 16 league games
2015-16- Injured
2016-17- average season with mostly inconsistent performances. Featured in just 11 PL games. Second fiddle to Ashley young
2017-18- Another poor season with highly inconsistent performances. Again second fiddle to 35 years Ashley fecking Young who was outperforming him.
2018-19 average start to the season and a decent second half. In a season of shit, he was least shit so yeah fair play. But again hardly great, let alone world class.
2019-20- Again average where fans were happy to see Brandon Williams being selected ahead of him. His only highlight from that season was calling out Lukaku in twitter
2020-21- Hands down amazing season. A brilliant season, also an amazing euros.
2021-22- Back to being average again and being injury prone.
So 1 great season out of 8. And if we are being generous, 1 and a half out of 8.
This is so disingenuous. He was injured for most of his first 3 seasons with us.Ok let us revisit his time here

Yeah, Malacia is okay tehnically. AWB looks clumsy with the ball and watching him with it I always think he's going to fall overMalacia is far and away more techincally capable than AwB. He makes intelligent runs both outside the winger and when playing an inverted role too. After 5 games or whatever i think he's looked like he has alot of potential.

He has been for most part here, a total waste of space.
And still doesn't change the fact that he has had just one great season from 8 plus. The guy is unreliable is the point. This is so disingenuous. He was injured for most of his first 3 seasons with us.

Your summary assessments of the other years are too negative but I’m not claiming it’s been much better. Young was decent and Shaw was young and had injury issues so I wouldn’t make that out to be as damning as you do. Throughout Ole’s time Shaw was mainly decent.
You highlight one interesting point - Young at 35 was in the side (and playing well, I’d add). Makes it all the more ridiculous that Shaw is pronounced finished at 27.
Consistency, fitness and (apparently) attitude have been serious issues for Shaw. I think most people accept that. I don’t accept these sweeping statements that he’s been useless (I don’t see the point of them).
Ah, he's been plenty good the last 4 years. I wouldn't get rid is all.And still doesn't change the fact that he has had just one great season from 8 plus. The guy is unreliable is the point.
He’s had 2 player of the year for us, so one out of 8 is wrong. And still doesn't change the fact that he has had just one great season from 8 plus. The guy is unreliable is the point.
He’s had 1 Matt busby player of the year. He won 2 players player of the year. He’s had 2 player of the year for us, so one out of 8 is wrong.
Fair comment. He is talented but inconsistent and, I do admit sometimes downright poor.He is not finished or useless but I don't think he is that amazing like some think he is. If we are not smart, we will have another Lingard or Pogba like situation, instead let us just sell him.
We had a shit 18-19 and in that shit he was the least shit. Doesn't mean he was amazing or worldclass. He’s had 2 player of the year for us, so one out of 8 is wrong.
Pleany good, I don't think so. He was shambles last season. One great season and some good games here and there doesn't make one plenty good.Ah, he's been plenty good the last 4 years. I wouldn't get rid is all.
Where could Shaw go is the question? Chelsea?
Yawn
YawnHe was quality for ONE SEASON. New manager who the majority of the fanbase wanted comes in and he's been dropped after two games.
This is a player who is widely renowned for being inconsistent, lazy on the pitch and regularly called out for being unfit. We've been shit for so long you've either forgotten how good the likes of Evra and Irwin were or you're too young to know.
The thing is, if he’s out of our team because he’s (essentially) fat and lazy, the likes of Newcastle will feel they can do better.Newcastle?
They had Dan Burn at left back the other week.
21-22Pleany good, I don't think so. He was shambles last season. One great season and some good games here and there doesn't make one plenty good.
Again, I am not saying he is useless or shit but he is not reliable to keep and hope he plays 38 games in PL. Can he be our Robertson or Cancelo/Walker. I don't think so.
