So because the team as a whole did better, it automatically makes each individual player better? I guess the likes of Cleverley really were better than Gerrard.
As for Ashley Young, I've always said people forget how damn good he was in the first half of 17/18. Not quite as good as Shaw was in 20/21, but he probably was the best performing leftback in the league (I remember him absolutely pocketing Salah to an almost embarrassing extent). However, just like the previous point with Lukaku, Young also fell away and was very average in the second half of that season and could easily have been dropped. Shaw maintained his level for almost the entire season, bar a slight drop in the last month where he was still playing well but not the brilliant form he'd been showing previously. Which also negates your point about falling into PR, as it was towards the end of the season where the media started really hyping him up, but those of us who couldn't care less about media knew that he'd actually been even better throughout the rest of the season. Saying that he wouldn't even make the top 10 shows you have an incredible bias against him as surely even his harshest critics would admit he was fantastic that season. Easily the best season any of our fullbacks have had since Evra.
