Never questioned his defending but I think he isnt all that great when attacking but thats fine. You dont need roberto carlos in every position.

He's certainly looking that way. Looks like Ole has been telling him to get forward more and he has been (obviously not so much last night). Some more darting runs in regular games, and a lot of crossing practice and we're laughing.
Tbf also, Jose was the one that manipulated fan's view on him especially that comment of being "his brain".
He was playing young ahead of him even though shaw looked to be doing better in the few chances he had (young had a couple of games that were fantastic but most times he was average at LB IMO)
Anyways, I love the fact people have now accepted him the way he is and he's fully deserving of that new contract he penned.
Hes a brilliant defender, he just needs to add more to his attacking game and he will be up there as the best LB in the world

Always been aware that Luke is a very fast player when he gets moving but in the game there is a moment when he and Mbappe are racing for a loose ball and it seemed like even distances but there was only ever going to be one winner and it wasn’t going to be Mbappe. Not sure if Mbappe was really giving it full throttle but given the situation you’d expect him to be and he must realise he isn’t winning this race and pulls out a good few yards short. Would have loved to see a straight line duel between the two.

Because blind left (by his own choice) and young was out because of the world cup. It wasn't by his choice.
I had given up on Shaw after an underwhelming 4 seasons here (with some mitigating circumstances) but he’s now looking like our long-term solution at leftback. United player. Well done to him for sticking at it.
Yep, especially for game like this. More attacking intent for those lower league teams will be fantastic to see added. But his discipline for the most part is fantastic. Again, he doesnt get easily beaten on one ones or one-twos.

We need to use his speed and coverage on the overlaps more, as opposed to him learning how to 'attack' but he is putting a very good case for his defensive ability ala Cole.

Yeah I think I remember that! He definitely matched Mbappe for acceleration a couple of times. That was incredible to see, since we all know how fast Mbappe is. (Ole: "he's lightning")
Would love to see him running at people more, then he'll have more moments like Lukaku's first vs Southampton.
I don’t think his attacking side has been fully unleashed yet. He doesn’t have the full license to go all out. Most of the time Pogba and Martial are very further up the pitch. Ole has played Pogba somewhere between LCM + AM. Matic alone isn’t enough to cover all midfield areas including the one left by Pogba. Someone has to cover the hole and Shaw just has more defensive duty than usual.
In big games facing fast paced players like Liverpool’s Salah and PSG Mbappe, he just had to be more defensive as usual. These few games where we have 10 injured players, Shaw just had to be more cautious as well.
Would like to see him being given full license to attack. For example, when he go all out, Herrera can drop back a bit more so Matic can cover Shaw’s area as well when all of Pogba Martial Shaw are storming forward

he outspeeds anyone running back to snuff the danger but hardly uses it going past on the overlap. i don't get it. he could become the best in the world if he incorporated a consistent overlap with deadly cross to his game ontop of his already supreme defense.

He can do it. He can work on it and do it. I have big faith restored in this guy. Has been tired of his lack of offensive output but last 3-4 games has been nothing short of immense allover from him.
I think it is obvious that with Martial and Pogba on his side he does limit his attacking runs and tends to go inside depending on where Pogba is positioned, he’s playing his role and is sticking to tactics, but recently without those 2 I think he has attacked more, or when he had Fred on his side and Pogba was on the right for me he got forward more frequently and committed to a lot more.
As I said earlier it seems clear to me he is under instruction not to be so gun hoe in an attacking sense hence not overlapping or going inside at every opportunity. What he does need to improve is that when he goes and finds himself in these areas he has to get better at making the clinical decision as he has all the ability to just go past people and drive balls across or pick out a man. That is what needs to improve and not the amount of overlaps. Because there are times in every game where he is in a great position and he doesn’t make the correct choice.
He has been this season's most reliable player, next to De Gea. Let's not forget that the injuries he has been through was career threatening. After healing up, he has overcome fan abuse and claimed his place in the squad. He deserves our respect. And, if he stays fit, I can see him as our leading left back for the coming decade.
@GifLord There was a part towards the end of the 2nd half where we lost the ball and they punted it long, Shaw and a couple others raced to the ball. They had quite a head start but he absolutely flew passed them!. I'd like to see that again as he seemed to come from nowhere.
His running is quite something. First of all, he looks completely unfazed when running. Against Liverpool, he and Salah had a sprint where both clocked in at 33 km/h, but the difference was that Salah was giving everything he had and looked to be flat out, wheareas Shaw looked to be jogging and was looking as if he hadn't reached top gear. Against Crystal Palace he had a run against Townsend where they were side by side, Shaw took one powerful stride and Townsend just gave up trying. The same thing happened with Alves against PSG, and Shaw also looked to easily keep pace with Mbappe.
On another note, his close control and short passing is top notch.
I think that is mainly down to instructions.
Ole is looking to find a right balance in the team, I recall him mentioning that we can't always go all out attack after the first few games in charge.
He is a good defender, no doubt about that. Just hope he starts bombarding forward more often.
? De Gea has been average for his standards in my opinion. Lindelof is having a better season, as is Pogba.
Once we get better at controlling games i'm sure he will. Right now if he bombs forward and we lose the ball our pressing isn't good enough to win it back quickly enough, so we can't play quite so risky.
People have a short memory. Before his leg break he was our best player that season.
Even with injuries and having to suffer 2 years under a manager (jose) who bullied him, he was always world class at defending.
I'm not surprised he's the best defensive fullback in the world. His attacking could obviously improve loads but you don't need to out-and-out attacking fullbacks. You get fine balance with a defensive one (Shaw) and a brilliant attacking one (Dalot). Barcelona had the exact same balance with Abidal and Alves. They weren't a bad team at all, eh?
Talent was never the question with Shaw, it was his mentality. A double leg break is very difficult to come back from, you lose so much confidence and he had his fair share of weight problems. I remember there were people in his life that were being bad influences on him regarding his diet. He worked hard in pre-season and looks to have gained some focus.
Absolutely stoked for the guy. Despite only turning 24 this year he’s played like a seasoned veteran these last few weeks. Still needs to take more initiative in the offense but once he does he’ll be an absolute top player.
Luke Shaw was excellent once again. One of our best players.

It wasn't my aim for the post to give a shoutout to every player who is having a good season, but to give recognition to Shaw by comparing him with De Gea (who has been Captain Reliable for several seasons now), and what you call average, is still fairly good to be honest. Lindelöf has without a doubt had his breakthrough season, so I guess I could have mentioned him too. Although Pogba is giving world class performances now, and since Ole, he had an abysmal first part of the season under José, and what|s more important in this discussion and this thread is that Luke stood out even in that period.
I remember questioning his mentality and whether he really wanted to succeed here, he really came across as timid and lacking concentration on the pitch. But jesus, the past 2-3 months he's been fantastic, one of the things that has stood out for me is his attitude. To me he seems to have knuckled down, his mentality on the pitch has completely changed (he even had a go at Pogba for a misplaced pass which impressed me) and just generally seems to be the most motivated I've ever seen him.

I had my doubts a couple of months ago that Shaw would make the step up, he has been brilliant since then. If he can do this consistently over a season he will be one of the best left backs in the game.

Well I don’t remember him being called ‘brainless’, and the fact that the same manager later played him and re-signed him is evidence to me that there was nothing personal, and the player did perhaps have to do more, after all.

I wouldn't afford him that benefit of the doubt. He might've seen sense in the end but it doesn't excuse the two years of disgraceful treatment that preceded it.
Given that he’s been one of the world’s best manager’s over the past 15 years, I think I will absolutely afford him that benefit of the doubt. Especially as it was also evidenced by Shaw not performing well when given the chance during that period.
I wouldn't blame Mourinho too much. Every manager Shaw has ever had has said he has fitness issues, it was getting to be last chance saloon with him. Mourinho had tried to be nice and got nowhere so tough love was called for, and it worked. He's playing better than ever now.
