He was far better today than he was against Burnley, gets way too much praise for what he actually does though.

Shaw has played good in the first half of games then had really poor second half performances lately. Odd player and not one I'm entirely convinced will ever be good enough for a club looking to compete for the main trophies.

Agreed.

I think we all had such high hopes for him before that injury. After looking like a write off for so long to finally come back and put together a run of games we're all looking for the bright spots on his game.

Despite all that I think he generally plays it way too safe. Seems like one of those guys to put in a consistent 6/10 performance, and doesn't seem to be pushing himself to leave more of a mark on the game. A bit too laid back for me.

I'd like to see Tierney brought in to provide some competition. He looks a cracking player with a brilliant mentality, whom competition with could bring the best out of Shaw.

But hey at least he's playing consistently! That's still great to see in itself after the last few years.

Thought it was one of his better games today, but he definitely needs to be more involved attacking wise. Defensively he is not half bad, there is a reason teams attack us all the time our right side so he doesn't have to do much defensive work, and that's probably because he is doing his job pretty well.

I think Sanchez in front of him doesn't help at all with his attacking output, they just don't connect at all, with Martial he usually is a lot more involved in attacking play, but I do agree his attacking still have to be improved

Is he going to be suspended soon? 8 yellow cards already.
You get a suspension if you get 5 yellows before December 26th and a 2-match ban if you get 10 before March 30th. For your 15th yellow you get a 3-match ban.

United is the only team in the league that has gotten a yellow card every match.

Shaw also played a lovely pass to Rashford and should have had an assist. More of that please. If he could whip in a nice cross, he would be devastating.

He's a consistent left back that can actually defend. Why doesn't he deserve praise? He's been far and above my expectations for this season and we're lucky to have him considering the scarcity of good left backs in the world. Yes he's no Marcelo going forward but he's still decent whilst being a better defender than most.

Shaw is probably the best managing Mourinho did whilst he was here.

Delighted with his performance yesterday. Definitely the most solid LB since Evra.

I only predicting his growth to be upwards from here, perfecting his tools to attack more effectively.

Only then the fans can be generally happy with him as the main LB for United.

His first season where he plays a lot. I had my doubt, but his performance is getting more solid game by game.
That yellow card was silly, though. At least he shouldn't get one by doing such a meaningless foul.

@el3mel a Mourinho fan? He'd been calling for Mourinho's sack ages before it actually happened...
He definitely wasn't a Mourinho fan from what I read. The deluded poster who blindly supported Mourinho to the disastrous end was Haram.

I thought he did well again, could do with signing someone to push him for his spot though.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind another LB in his early 20's to give another option on that spot, knowing that Ashley Young is nailed on to start on the right for another season at least.

Dalot and Young on RB, Shaw and New LB at the left side of defense. Enough with the CB who can play as full back type of signings.

That's goes for pretty much the whole team. Our second halfs have been poor. It obvious the teams fitness levels are not up to the standards Ole wants. They were upto standard for José's tactics

A little more attacking output please, but overall a good performance.

The more he and Martial play together, the better. That familiarity will breed common understanding and greater interplay. As a consequence that should give Shaw the chance to get into more attacking positions

If he stays fit (which he is largely doing), we don't have to worry about the LB position anytime soon.

He really needs to work on his stamina. Struggles to maintain the high octane play required for a fullback after the 60th minute or so.

Shaw constantly is among our better players, and it's been like that the entire season for me. Can he do better? Of course. Ideally I would want another LB so they push each other for that spot, but it can wait considering our other needs.

He's one of most consistent players and defensively has been very good. Ideally I'd like to see him get him better attackingly but right now he's doing well.

Signing a LB should be the least of our concerns right now.

Quite frankly, he is a much better performer recently if compared with Young on the other flank. Very few mistakes.

It is understandable that he is contributing not so much to attack - our left flank is overloaded by Pogba and Martial/Sanchez, but that cross for Rashford was absolutely sublime, Pogba level pass - so credit should be given when credit is due.

One cross in 90 minutes is offering next to nothing in attack, so ok then, I could have added a couple of extra words in but it seems like you're trying to pick a petty argument, I've praised Shaw defensively after most games, but his offensive contribution is largely poor, there's nothing hyperbolic about it, I'm not even one of those desperate for us to sign a new LB in the summer, I just think he is what he is, a limited fullback who functions well enough due to the 2 players ahead of him on his side needing more defensive cover than attacking help.

Guess I was just wound up by people immediately jumping on the guy after each game and read your post in that light.

I do agree with you that his attacking game needs to improve, wonder if it's something that can be coached?

Did well but his lack of fitness is still holding him back. Conserving energy is affecting the amount of attacking runs he makes and defensively makes cheap fouls when he's struggling to stick the pace

I think that is harsh to say. Luke attempted a lot of sprints yesterday, dare I say more than what he usually does.

He was also the one who sprints back to make recovery runs.

I think he is at the peak of his fitness.

He is a good footballer, he has good touch and passing but his crossing is poor. Defensively he is good and also involved lot in build up play but when he goes to byline he just crosses without any direction.

Hopefully he will improve on that and one day one of his long shots will end up in the back of the net.

The lack of offensive output was Sanchez's fault. He kept drifting inward and didn't link up with Shaw. Martial and Shaw are a much better pairing like you say because Martial stays wider and has an understanding with Shaw.

Oh I see. Thanks for that

I don't know what everyone else is seeing, but for me doing okay is not good enough for Manchester United.

Does alright defensively, offers very little going forward.

Think of Irwin, Evra, Gary Neville, Rafael - United fullbacks need to be able to help make things happen and overwhelm the opposition.

Shaw looks unfit, like he's trying to 'keep up' with his team mates.

What kind of numbers do people expect a full back to put up?

People's expectations for full-backs have probably changed in the last decade due to the likes of Dani Alves, Marcelo, Alonso, Alba etc. and even Baines, Coleman racking up goals and assists. Shaw's best asset is his defending though, so we should probably be comparing him to the likes of Ashley Cole rather than those wing-backs who can hardly defend. Having said have just looked at his stats; he's had some interrupted seasons here but he's never managed more than a single assist in a season, so maybe we should expect just a little more - Evra for example used to get about 3/4 assists a season. To be fair to him it's probably that if Rashford/Lukaku were more clinical this season he would be on 3/4 assists.

He’s a Mourinho fan not a United fan so it’s not surprising.

Thought Shaw was good today.
I might not agree with his extreme views on Shaw, but @el3mel is definitely not a Mourinho fan.
Not all people who called nonsense on the silly anti-Jose posts (in the past) are Mourinho fans. I thought we were done with this #TrueFan stuff.

I think he was good yesterday.
However, I am sad about his habit to pick silly yellow cards in games though. Get yellow for good fouls when needed for the team, not for doing silly stuff.

This is my fair assessment of Luke Shaw. He is not the type of fullback to whip in crosses all game like a Mendy or score goals like a Marcus Alonso. He never was and he never will be. What he is good at though is dribbling and quick passing, Thus his main attacking input is bombing forward and assisting the forward in front of him with very good link up in tight spaces to occupy opposition and beat press. A quick view of our pass maps since Ole took over shows a high density of passes between him, Pogba and Martial- all three being good dribblers and good at link up play. My opinion is that with a left hand side of Pogba and Martial, Shaw doesn't really need to be a real attacking force in this sense that most here want him to be. I feel that should be the focus of our right side.

One of the reasons i don't want us buying a pure right winger is because based on the few games we have played under Ole, we play sort of a 442 diamond with the right sided attacker coming central and the right back going high and stretching play. I hope Dalot settles well and takes the rightback spot because those are his strengths
