This is what you get with Shaw, solid in defence most games but suspect in attack. Compare his delivery to Dalot and the difference is quite big, his delivery is difficult to defend against. Shaw will put in a good cross every few games, but attacking fullbacks do that a couple of times every game.

I for one have little problem with Shaw, as he has the potential to be a fantastic defensive fullback. He is also proficient in the build-up. The major shortcoming is that when gets near the box he is quite poor.

I’m with you, there are times he was being lazy to go forward. The talent is there but the fitness and stamina aren’t, if he can works on his stamina and lose a little kilo, he will reach his full potential.
 
Whether you like Shaw or not we still need a new LB. Someone to provide competition. Shaw hasnt shown he can stay injury free all season and keep fitness for a full season and the games he does stay fit he is still somewhat suspect at times. If Shaws out we have no left footed leftback. Alex Telles is at the right age to come in and make an instant impact. Shaw still needs to do better he gets away with a lot because we have Young as a RB who is one of the worst players in our squad.

Yeah, so basically he's a 6-7/10 player if playing consistently.
Is this what MUFC should be satisfied with, though? Bearing in mind we've had Evra and Irwin as long-standing legends in that position in title winning teams.

One of the best performers today, on both sides of the pitch. One of the standout performers this season as well. Long may it continue Luke.
 
I thought he was brilliant today. He needs to work on his crossing but his general work around the pitch is of a very high standard.
 
He is effectively a rock at the back and he’s making it look easy as well, if he adds a better and more consistent crossing level to go with his obvious great approach play then that’s the complete fullback.
 
Was really good. Won most of his 1 v 1 situations. Only complain I have is he tends to tuck in a bit too much allowing crosses to come in. Don't know if that is down to instructions or if it's Pogba/Martial who is actually supposed to be the blocking those crosses.
 
I love him. I don't care that he isn't the best crosser and has the best shot at him, his short passing is very, very good, and he protects our left side perfectly. A very reliable defender. Maybe I overrate him a bit, but he is certainly underrated here on the caf.
 
Solid defensive performance, he's been a steady 6/10 performer for us over the last couple of months.
 
He’s really good and seems to be getting better. He’s part of the reason we’re so strong on the left side and has a great understanding with Martial and Pogba down that left channel. Defensively he’s looking much improved which is a big positive. His crossing could do with some work though.
 
Had a great game Luke. Looked more assertive than in a while. If he only can keep working on his delivery and offensive output as well as and just keep improving decision making and consistency, he might come good. I'm not writing it off, even though I am a bit hesitant with fully believing in him. Still has a way to go. But showed some actual maturity this game, so thats very good.
 
He's constantly improving IMO. Under Mourinho he was starting to get regular action finally so that was the plus, but he still looked "meh". Now he's looking very assured on and off the ball, supports the attack, is excellent in possession and is solid defensively. Just hope he stays fit, but he's an automatic choiceright now.
 
His passing is fantastic. He threaded a brilliant ball into Pogba in the second half, which then set Martial off free on the left.
 
He has become a consistently good performer for us. So different from his injury prone, weight gaining days.

MUFC have had players like that for decades. The way I see it is as follows.

If Shaw improves his end product then he becomes an automatic starter, if he doesn't then he needs a specific setup to excel. He's a very serviceable defensive fullback. Very good 1v1, great recovery runs, difficult to beat in the air, can play out of the back.

Isn’t that what Irwin was. 6/7 out of 10 consistently every game and great at free kicks. I don’t recall Irwin really being like some mind boggling fullback and his main strength was his consistency.

Yup. I’ve never understood it when people have had it the other way around. There’s a reason Shaw was playing professional football in the Premier League when he was 17. It’s because he was a strong lad that could defend.

The numbers didn’t back up his time at Southampton but he was a proper attacking weapon just going past people driving in to the box and rolling balls across the box that people just didn’t take advantage, he was actually quite frightening going forward, could pick the ball up in his own half go past 3 and hit the byline and flash a ball across the box so the attacking ability is there just think now he is a lot less reckless and playing with more maturity than the arogance of that 17 yr old.

He certainly better defensively now than he was then as now I’d say his reading has improved massively where as back then he relied on his pace alone.
 
His touch and short passes definitely is up there with the very best at the club. So calm and clean under pressure.
 
Good professional performance yesterday. Nothing to complain about even though I'm still not 100% on him like others, but that was professional performance.

Our LB has to facilitate Pogba and Martial offensively and cover for them defensively. Shaw does this very well. He will never be a Marcelo type and he does not have to be. I agree a few more assists over the course of a season should be expected though.
 
Another great game from Luke. If he can just learn to time his overlaps better and put in a peach of a cross, he will be the complete fullback.
 
I thought he was excellent and one of our better players on Saturday, surprised to see his rating lower than 7 for the game. He was an 8 for me.
 
He's a great LB. Probably the best defensive full back in the game. His attacking game isn't going to improve by much but that will balance well with an attacking RB. If and when we sign one.
 
He still needs competition. We need another LB. Someone like Alex Telles would be perfect. Hopefully Solksjaer is just doing this nice guy act until he gets a permanent contract. If anyone knows the quality United need it is him seeing as he has been in a CL winning team. Need to see him demand quality and players for depth.

Luke excels in play build up, link up, passing(excellent technically enough to be midfielder!!), dribbling and with excellent defensive contribution. With Pogba and Martial on his side, he does not need to be an extensive attacking outlet. He needs to compensate for Pogba and Martial's attacking game, being good positionally, overlap and link up when required. A role which he has done superbly. A more attacking FB would have let our strength i.e. our left side become a weakness. Instead, he has shown maturity and complements Pogs and Martial very well.

If I am nitpicking, his crossing and assists could get better, otherwise we have a potential world class LB on our hands.

Exactly, we have Martial who stays wider left and Pogba who occupies the inside space, where is Shaw supposed to overlap? He’s much better off using his good short passing skills and touch to out together passing moves and staying back to cover Pogba’s lack of defensive awareness.
 
He can only get better in this set up. Link up play on the left has been good, makes good runs. My only concern is his crossing ability which looks below average.

I can only assume it's people who play FIFA expect everyone to be as good as Dani Alvez and Marcelo. When it reality there isn't a LB or RB in the last 20 years that are as good as those two at attacking. In fact, they're probably better than most out and out wingers. Other honorable mentions maybe Alba and Alaba, but those two aren't as good as attacking as people think, just check their stats. Alaba is obviously a baller but that's beside the point.

There isn't many LBs better than Shaw yet some United fans have an agenda against the kid. His crossing isn't the greatest and won't improve really but he adds loads to our game. Good build up play, a Brazilian type first touch, fast, strong and the best defensively. As I mentioned above, those attributes are excellent for balance if and when we sign an attacking RB. Similar to Eric Abidal's role for a team with Dani Alvez.

His attacking or lack of it got shown up tonight. He can’t cross to save his life.
 
These big matches show that he is just average PL defensive full back. Or how we United fans love to describe our players; solid.
 
The lad has such poor attacking instincts and anticipation. Why is he so reluctant to overlap? Roughly around the 76th minute, Sanchez was on the edge of the 18 yard box to the left and for some reason, instead of occupying the obvious space out to Sanchez on the outside of the 18 yard box, he shifted backwards. It's not just an isolated incident either. He does it in almost every game.
