Great performance today, possibly motm after De Gea

Ehh, no. But I definitely don’t think he had a bad game at all. My big concern is his football intelligence, sometimes it feels like he’s not quite fully engaged.

He did better when they quickly switched it to his side and he had to get a last ditch block in, rather than an attack going all the way down that side.

Decent enough game I thought.

Yeah, it's almost like he was getting outnumberes routinely without any help until Lukaku came in and Rashfords moved to the left flank.
It’s a bit shocking that all these nae sayers haven’t noticed this and that tactically spurs did one on us and Ole took a risk not giving Martial any defensive duties or if it was supposed to be Pogba going with Trippier.

Like I said earlier Son,Lamela, Erickson, Alli kept moving in to his area so he has to cover them or go inside with them allowing Trippier free reign who wasn’t getting covered or was only occasionally getting covered until later when Ole changed it to a more traditional 433.

Also explains why he couldn’t really get forward as much as everytime he did they just pulled in to that space.

I thought he was strong defensively today and he's got some real grit in his game these days. The chances that came on his side were due to Jones vacating his space and charghing forward too often leaving huge gaps. He also showed composure in possession in tight spaces against the press.

Tbf I feel like it got even worse after that with Rashford mostly staying up for the counters and being too knackered to go back.

Most Spur's chance came from his side.
It is because Poch knew we were shit in the air and Trippier is obviously their best crosser. So their play was to work on that side to get him some space to put crosses in.

Gets sucked in and leaves his side exposed. Seen Pogba asking him to focus. He does this all the time. And he lets his man cross way too easily. Always drops off. He has the strength to nudge a player of the ball but hardly does it. He is good at passing in-between the lines and has a solid first touch. But he had at least 3 chances to play a diagonal to Rashford but chose to pass sideways. He doesn't overlap enough and when he does, he doesn't do it with enough intelligence. Decent player but its worrying we haven't been linked to a LB. He hasn't stayed fit for a full season in years and shouldn't be relied on as our only left footed LB. Ferland Mendy or Alex Telles would be adequate competition.

Very good in possession but gives his rw/rb far to much space. Wonder if he would defend different if he had Koulibaly next to him instead of Jones?

Our best defender today IMO. Really strong up against Trippier who is a threat and Martial didn’t give a huge amount of cover

he's really not that good, i find it really hard to see what other people see in him

Thought he was pretty good today. It was his instructions to stay back and not venture out too much in the Spurs half.

We need to get someone to compete with him in the summer, though.

I thought he was pony. Those that think he was good have awful standards. Offered nothing going forward and hardly any of the crosses down that side were stopped. I don't know what he is actually good at

My thoughts exactly. They always seem to have soo much space and free man down his side that one crossfiwld pass and we all out to Sea

For those criticising Shaw, do you realise he gets absolutely no defensive help from Pogba or Martial. Often he is hung out to dry, hence he gets caught out of position now and again.

I thought he was our most consistent defender today.

What? He's been good this season and played well today. Brainless.

feck me, i didn't say that he is bad. I just think that he needs to raise his game. In defence and in attack especially.
In defence today he stayed too many times too far from his players and in attack he didn't do much( but again it is maybe our gameplan to give Martial more space to go one on one with defender).

He’s excellent and terrible at the same time. He confuses me.
I think he just has a tendency to coast through games, he's a decent player but certainly not irreplaceable. Thing is, he's still young so there's plenty of time for improvement.

He’ll get time to grow anyway, it’s not worth the expenditure to replace him now with other priorities. On the whole, we could do with a bit more from our full back areas, but bigger priorities.

Weird reading the comments. I thought he was awful today. No first touch, always looked slow on the ball, continually played the ball into Matic's feet when he was surrounded by 3-4 Spurs players.

I thought he was good today, not great.
Young is poor on the right.

We should get ready to go replacements for the CB and RB

I love Shaw on his day and I honestly don't think there are many (if any) better defensively at left back than him. But his attacking play is terrible. Mind you, for a player I always compliment defensively he gave the left wing too much space at times today. Still solid, though.

Starting to think he should be a CB.

He is not a dynamic dribbler or crosser which you need at least one for a fullback. He has pace and power but doesn't even try to run with the ball.

I think he's very good today.

Spurs is an all high energy and high pressing maniac team, Shaw did well.

When Martial is out, there is a lack of support from the others to help him defend our left side. Pogba is the only one who helped him then, while the others are busy defending centrally and right side, while a certain someone is just standing around high up the pitch.

Martial and Pogba were non existent defensively unlike Herrera who was always there to help out Young.
Pogba covered for Shaw on a few occasions. To say he was non existent defensively is a gross exaggeration.

Its the mental bit for me. He plays like he is somewhere else in his mind at times. Makes him play in a lost kinda way, even though he looks confident. Not sure what is up with him. Not happy about the contract, we will need to upgrade but he isn't a bad backup.

We need competition at LB and bringing someone like Tierney or Mendy in, will be very beneficial as far as squad depth goes. Could also push Shaw to reach new heights.

You said he wasn't good enough for our club, which is clearly not the case.

I guess. He just doesn't inspire much hope in me at the moment, but it is possible. Mendy from City or someone else?

I love posters like you who analyze every word and put words out of context. I didn't say that he is not good enough for our club, he is just currently not good enough. Would i replace him with some top left back like Alaba or Marcelo or Sandro? Yes. Would i replace him with some random solid left back? No. Ok, lets put it like this;
At this moment, we can do better on that left back. Shaw proved in past years that he can play on highest level. But currently he is not playing like that. He must raise his game and start making impact in attack. Like he did in the past. And if we talk about Spurs game, his positioning in defence wasn't good. He was caught out of position couple of times. Lets not pretend that he was great yesterday.

Maybe I went a bit overboard but Pogba was definitely not there as much as Herrera was on the other side. This in no way is criticism of Pogba as his role is further ahead than Herreras. My point was that Shaw is left to handle the defensive side by himself quite often as compared to Young on the other side so the probabilities of attacks coming in from his side are higher. Plus, Tripper is a more attacking fullback so that played a role too.

Didn't think he was bad yesterday, but felt he was tucked in very close to the CBs. Not sure if that was tactical or not as there was a lot of empty space on our left but we didn't really change it till we made subs.

It also feels like he's playing within himself now, maybe that's because he hasn't played much football fuel to injuries and knows so long as he stays fit there are a lot more games to come, but he's not making the same volume of attacking runs as he was at start of the season.
