Typical José, deflection at its finest by throwing others under the bus.

Took credit for his performance as he was telling luke what to do...if he was on the other side he wouldn't have played as well so he must do better.

criticising him for a hypothetical performance!

Give the kid a break. Shaw comes in the last 10 minutes, plays some good passes and then wins the penalty for us. Instead of praising Luke for saving us a point, Jose further blasts him for no apparent reason.

Mourinho's comments are perfectly fine and some of you either need to simply back the manager or better understand what he is saying.

1) His comments were partly in general. Just because Shaw bricked himself and begged for another chance does not negate his lack of application in past months. Mourinho states that he has potential and everyone wants him to succeed but he is glaringly lacking in many facets of his development. Mourinho coached Ashley Cole: I reckon he knows a fair bit about the LB position.

2) It seems Shaw had to be 'baby sat' this evening, with Mourinho constantly having to tell him what to do. His point being, if he had been on other side of pitch out of hearing range, Shaw would have often been applying the wrong tactic.

3) Mourinho has no need to take any credit for his players performance, is just an idiotic thing to say. I think its Shaw fans, possibly of his generation, who cant take criticism of any kind. This is Manchester United: our manager should criticise players as they see fit. I'm fed up with mollycoddled over pampered rich kids who cant deliver to our required performances. And also fed up with fans who cry on players behalf that 'he was thrown under the bus'. Boo fecking hoo.

I personally thought Shaw did OK tonight, but that view is now tempered a little with the revelation of point no 2 above.

I thought he did alright, he was clearly instructed to pump that diagonal into the box over and over and did so efficiently, and he made two important defensive interventions.

Throws all his young players under the bus continuously. Darmian is dreadful, Young is dreadful, Fellaini can't attack but he never says a word about the older players.

He almost sounds like he is blaming Rashford for being inconsistent LIKE ALL YOUNGSTERS ARE.

Mourinho's getting on my nerves to be honest.
you sound like you're going to cry. Bless. Poor petal.

Was energetic, which was always one of his main plusses. Shame he didn't get the goal. It was his shot handballed right?

Most of his crosses were average at best but I thought he really took the initiative, Moreso than most in the last 10 mins.

A very good piece of defending and just a general bit of drive and desire, looked like he has a point to prove.

Very pleased for him, maybe worth a start but I doubt Jose will get that carried away.

Good post!

He needs to play more, he is the only one who will actually overlap Rashford or Martial and give us another forward passing option. Hopefully he wants to play more and push in training to show Jose he is up for the fight. Hopefully a blessing Blind wasn't great and Young got injured as he might get a chance to get a few games in now. Knowing Mourinho he will probably opt for Darmian instead.

'Took credit for the performance, 'threw him under the bus'... ffs.

Always a fecking overreaction to Jose's comments.

I'm mixed on his performance.

He came on and settled into the game which was positive given the focus on him and he blocked a shot from a cross iirc.

But he was overhitting crosses, not making of the ball runs, not getting wide, not getting to the byline, no one-twos etc. And this was while he was fresh off the bench. And there were a few aimless long balls into the box.

This.

The fact some of the Caf are raving about his display is rather worrying.

Young did better.

Shaw didn't off much by way of overlap or taking on his man tonight.

Young was more effective.

Thought he was alright. Right place at the right time to have a shot on target. He won the pen essentially.

Crossing wasn't up to much and didn't overlap like we've seen in the past but it was his first game for ages no?

In previous games he has done that more than the rest, It was clear his brief from Mourinho was to launch it in to Fellaini and Zlatan tonight. I do agree Young was more effective but on a long term basis we need a genuine LB playing at LB.

As the game went on, Rojo went forward, Herrera went forward, only Bailly stayed back and maybe he was reluctant to commit too far up. He did have to sprint back and catch Lukaku once so either he was following instructions or he was wary of the counter.

Those comments from Mourinho are exactly why he eventually falls out with his players at most teams.

He could learn a lot from Valencia, being a similar type who relies more on natural athletic abilities than ball skills.

Problem seems to be he isn't very good at learning. Probably bunked too much school playing footy.

"He needs maturity" Guess he means, that he can suck balls as footballer but he has to be old as Afroman.

Was passable today and played key part in that penalty, still has a way to go though. I really wish some people wouldn't project greatness onto him just because they're desperate to see it from him.

He's been very honest in his answers lately. In the space of 2 minutes he breaks down and explains a part of the difficulty of bringing up youth at the higher levels. His comments about him giving instructions in the game make me think of dancers rehersing. Why are those comments a bad thing? Dancers get absolutely drilled with instructions. Why is a footballer at that age different? Shaw obviously isn't good enough to start and has pretty much relied on athleticism and instinct but at this level that's not enough.

His comment about money are also very true. Getting so rich so young can't be good for everybody. Too many it will get to their head. Hell, not even money will just do that, simply being signed. How many players have not made it because they thought they were the bee's kness (that's a term?) at age 16-17? Wasn't there a major talent in the '92 group who basically didn't make it because he was too full of himself and so he didn't train as well as the ones who made it? SAF used to make a point of not giving youngster too much money too early in their career. They had to earn their wages. Shaw, I imagine, is probably earning way too much for his own good.

But why does he have to talk about it in public. It's so unnecessary and petty. How many players did José sign in his career and were offered ridiculous wages. Is José earning his wages right now? He too is on world class wages as a manager and spending world class transfer money but no one is talking about that.

The way he spoke about Shaw makes me believe that he thinks Luke is autistic.

Standard Shaw performance. Excellent defensively, lacking in attack. I can understand Blind and Young occasionally playing LB, but Rojo or Darmian playing ahead of Shaw is just pure madness on José's behalf.

He will never be this world class attacking full back people expect him to become. His offensive game is just too poor ( no goals and just 1 assist in his entire senior career says it all) and the improvement required is just gonna be too overwhelming for him. Some folks have realized this but find it difficult to accept while some still believe in his acclaimed huge potential.

Judging a defender by goals and assists? Judging any player by assists? What year is this? A FB can have a great performance without an assist. Most of their great performances do not have assists.

I don't think he would saying it if he doesn't feel it neccessary. Different players react differently. We don't work with these players everyday, we don't know what they are like. Maybe he does.

LvG said the same things about Shaw that Mourinho has said. Questioned his fitness, training and in a similar context talked about young players being paid too much. Shaw's response to those remarks was that he agreed and subsequently he played great before breaking his leg.

Van Gaal was probably wrong there. Van Gaal put Luke Shaw on "extra training" and Shaw was injured soon after and was stop and start for the rest of the season. Redacted said that Shaw's extra training was directly correlated to Shaw's injury.
