Luke Shaw: ‘People can say I’m fat but I’ve never been out of shape’

He's really touchy about this fat thing.

I don't care if he's fat the issue was multiple managers questioning his fitness level. You don't have to be fat to not be fit enough.

Hopefully he stays on track this season as he's a better fullback than Young when he does play

I really want to say he reminds me of Fletcher et all who were criticized at first but proved to be exceptional later on, but he just doesn't do it.

The desire to improve just isn't there. To have Ashley Young play as a starting makeshift left back over you should give you enough motivation to improve and put a foot on your starting place but it doesn't appear to be the case with Shaw.

Players have been moved on for less, he's lucky Mourinho has more pressing concerns than left back right now.

It's quite disrespectful of the fans to try and worm out of it by saying he has a Rooney body. Just get your head down and prove yourself.

Lots of footballers like to talk, but don't do the walk. Or the waddle in this instance.

Sounds like generic Luke Shaw statement about his fitness.

Shaw was good when given a run of games last season. A significantly better option than Young. Just play him and we'll get to see it again.

As for the interview, at times you feel as if the players can't win. Martial (understandably) wants to leave the club and is panned for not fighting for his place. Shaw wants to fight for his place and is panned for being some sort of free loader.

Now, I'm not saying it's definitely the same folk holding both opinions, but it's generally the same sort of people that take any opportunity to criticise our playing squad. So it probably is.

On the basis we're not buying a new left back, I'm all for Shaw giving it another go. He's our best option.

The "Ashley Young is a makeshift leftback" stuff is bollocks, he played there for an English team that went to extra time in a world cup semi final less than 2 weeks ago.

Ashley Young is now a recognized international full back, the idea that we should be embarrassed to have him play there for is is ludicrous.

He’s always coming out with little press releases like this, either him or his agent anyway. We hear this then he gets injured, then 3 months later rinse and repeat. Just get rid.

I must have missed it as I remember he was as clueless as ever in defence and useless in attack.

You must have. Either that or you have an agenda. Or worse, don't really understand this football thing.

Shaw was given a run of games over the Christmas period. He started a fair few off the belt and was quite rightly praised for his performances. Mourinho, of all people, even agreed.

Young came back and Shaw was sacked off, again. Look it up.

The way to win is to get your head down and really prove yourself. He's never done anything worthy of taking the spot off Young.

Clearly putting weight on doesn't prove yourself to anyone.

He has a gut most the time dunno what he's crying about. If any professional footballer of all fecking jobs is carrying weight they obviously don't take it seriously.

Well done for missing my point entirely.

You've merely made an entirely new one.

All this physique talk is just cover for his psychological issues. I think the injury hit him hard, understandably. Mou likes players who come out fighting and I don't think Shaw is that character. But I do see him being a decent squad player this year and signing a new contract. I don't think any other top 6 team would want him, not even Spurs.

"I’ve got that Wayne Rooney type of body.”"

Okay fatty McFatterson
It's not hard to see what he means. He will struggle to wear skinny jeans but it's okay. Stick with the body shape that gets you performing optimally, not everyone needs to look like Nani.

OTOH i wouldn't mind us passing on a LB signing to give Shaw one last chance, his biggest issue believe it or not is not the aforementioned fitness problem even though he plays in a position that would expose a lack of stamina ruthlessly. It's his lack of intelligence which even Mourinho once pointed out, that he needs to have his hand held on the pitch and told what to do in every situation which is less than ideal for an attacking FB. He may well have a second wind in his United career which i would not mind at all as he still has the talent IMO.

Physically, I've never doubted him... hes just unaware of what the feck is going on around him on the pitch

Looking forward to seeing everyone's 6-pack's in the "I want your pics" thread

Shaw was praised just because many United fans really don't like Young and desperately want Shaw to succeed. He has been average in all these games.

Christ, its like a load of venomous teenage girls in here.

If I have an issue with him, its that his footballing brain just isn't good enough to make the most out of his considerable physical and technical gifts. But I'm always going to hope he comes good as long as he's a Manchester United player.

I feel like I read that interview last year, and the year before as well. As for comparing himself to Wayne Rooney in any way - that just invites ridicule. Forget the body type stuff, Rooney at 22 was a great player who'd already contributed to United winning things. Luke Shaw right now is just some bloke who draws wages to sit on the bench or who gets subbed off early.

Maybe this season that will change. In which case great.

Funny how every manager he's ever had has questioned his commitment and or fitness levels. Never mind the fans.

Amateur psychologist me says it's not Shaw's weight that's the root issue and that he has mental health problems.

Might be projecting, as someone with mental health problems, but the things he says publicly do point that way.

Yeah, I didn't miss your point though. Unless you care to explain it better?

You did. In its entirety. I feel no need to explain it again as I'd be best simply copying and pasting. I made a point about the content of players interviews, in which they can seldom win (true). You made a point about the performances on the pitch being the most important thing (also true). They're separate issues, however.

He was praised because he had good games. That's a fact.

That is a really lazy theory. :D

Young was one of the players who surprised/impressed me most before christmas. Still I did hope Shaw would develop to surpass him, though I was beginning to have serious doubts.

When Shaw came into the tram around christmas, I thought he played very well for a young player coming into the team. He looked very fit, eager to impress, was very good 1 on 1 defensively, brought the ball up the pitch well. Positioning looked off sometimes, and last third passes seldom came off, but on the whole I thought he was amoung the best third of our players most of those games.

What I did get, though, was that Mourinho was less impressed than most, as it had something to do with wrong choices in regards to what the tactics where, in terms of positioning, when to press, what to do with the ball, when to hold back etc. It’s clear Young gets these things, why it got his place back and why he went to the WC semi, while Shaw regardless of fitness is a really slow learner.

Now, against Milan, Shaw disappointed me alot, and this time it was his application. He looked like Martial the game before.

Another example of Shaw being thick (pun intended)
Find it weird as much as you like. I find it weird people calling him fat when he isn't. Just because he isn't about 5% body fat like Ronaldo, he's deemed fat. There was a pic of him in training a few weeks ago where his 6 pack is showing, how is that fat?
A heavily filtered picture to make his abs more visible. That was a bit embarassing
