Lukaku - transfer speculation | Gone

I'm guessing so. Still baffled as to why, but then again Jose won the Champions League with Benny McCarthy upfront so who knows.

Mou always liked having that bullish striker upfront, and Chelsea always likened Lukaku to being the next Drogba, that's probably why. Didn't see it myself, always did think Lukaku was a bit too heavy.

And Deschamps lost that final with Dado Prso.

You want to use Lukaku as an attacking midfielder?!

I was referring to how we’d play Bruno Fernandes. God no to Lukaku as an attacking midfielder.

My thinking being Bruno Fernandes can emulate a Lampard-Chelsea role and be the guy to chip in with close to 20 goals to offset that youthful but inconsistent frontline consisting of Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, James etc. Rashford or Martial could have a break out year and rack up goals Harry Kane style but who fecking knows...

Very little faith we will replace him. So that's all our eggs in the Rashford scoring more than 10 league goals basket......Great.

This
The money will go towards Maguire, and we'll close the deal within 24hrs of selling Lukaku to further prove we don't have the funds otherwise.

Rashy will be expected to at least double his best goal tally and lots of fans will delude themselves into thinking Martial comes good and Greenwood gets double figures.

Don't tell me we are getting dybala for him. All the juventus link is to get inter coming up with the asking price.

Or are we? :wenger:

But if OGS is so keen on moving Lukaku, why at the same time he doesn't want to get rid of other players who are even worse? Lingard, Matic, Fred, Rojo, Jones, Darmian, Mata,... It would be understandable if OGS were to consistently cut the deadwood
Because Lukaku is the only one of those who wants to actually leave, and is actually desirable to other clubs.

Yep, similar in height and supposed strength, but totally different as players.
Lukaku very very rarely ever battered anyone off the ball like a heavyweight should.

And even the crosses sort of dried up, leaving him very little service.

But it was the massive realisation that seemed to happen last year that he couldn't control a football that finally turned it. We ignored it in the 27 goal first season.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if the club had resale value in mind, mate.

I'm trying to convince myself that they aren't completely stupid, so please go along.

Maybe Ole wants go rid of the players you mentioned, which I would be happy to see go; but finds it hard due to the high wages Woody gave them, other clubs are going to want to match those wages so we are stuck with them.

Jones 4 year plus 1 was pathetic. Matic' and Darmian's contracts are up next year so hopefully they move them. I've read the Lingard is getting an extension and a £30,000 a week pay rise for doing feck all.

Phewww, my bad, apologies sir.

Make others understand they are not wanted and ship them out on cut prices. There will be takers if the price is low enough - it is always like that.

Must be almost complete

Not gonna miss him, he’s been pretty mediocre for us.

I’m worried about our attacking options now though. Martial and Rashford won’t get us top 4 there’s not enough goals in the side.

I hope we are not planning to replace him with ben yedder or dembele from lyon. Would be a massive downgrade. Nicolas pepe could have been perfect but I am not sure who else.

Ultimately he's been yet another transfer flop hasn't he, never dispelling the myth about his bad first touch or that he never scores against the top sides

The whole Lukaku v Morata debates look utterly ridiculous now given both have been moved on within 2 years

It'd be interesting to see what type of profile striker we bring in, proven goal scorer i.e. £80m+ or someone that would be happy to play second fiddle to Rashford?

My main worry out of selling him is no replacement and the club seemingly placing blind faith on Rashford, Martial etc. It seems like a naive idea but us fans have no idea what happens in training and what tactics are being devised.

Rashfords form dropped off the fecking cliff after January. Is he suddenly going to turn it on like Mbappe or Kane under a new fitness regime and style of play? Is OGS just hoping ‘Rashy’ can do that?

If we sold him for something close to 70m that means we made a profit this window no? Damn, we are doing an Arsenal while Arsenal is spending money!

It certainly does.
Fairly clear that Lukaku was both the wiser choice, and the better of the two, but neither were anywhere near a success to say the least. Bit harsh on Lukaku's first year, as 27 goals was quality. But it just never really felt right.

Seriously though, wish him well. Although, I have my doubts about us being competent enough to replace his goals.

Jadon isn't leaving this window. Seems we're hoping for him next summer. If we are to bring someone in to replace Lukaku, it'll be more of a forward than a wide player.

Based on what? With Martial playing upfront on tour we now have two readily available strikers about to enter their peak years, both of whom can also play on the left. On the other hand our right-wing consists of Lingard, James (??) & Mata... surely it's not hard to see where our problem area in attack is?

Pretty remarkable that he got 27 goals in his first season given he went on a run of about 1 goal in 3 months

You disregard Greenwood for some reason

just gone to Arsenal apparently

Clearly but we've not been reliably linked with any right-sided attackers this window. All the links have been players who prefer to play centrally like Dembele and Ben Yedder.

It happened the season before with Ibra though.

And I'm sure Van Persie had something like an 8-10 game run without a goal in his excellent season.

Lukakus goal frequency has always been one extreme to another. He could have a three month period where he’s scoring effortlessly then go three months where he couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo. An Everton mate found that frustrating when he played for them.

This whole United thing has been weird with him, but that’s a common theme with United overall since Ferguson left. Strange and unpredictable. When he was at Everton I really thought he had it in him to go to a top club and challenge Kane for the next 5 or so years for the golden boot and get close to the top charts overall. His first season at United, albeit a bit shaky still showed he had that goal-scoring potential. Last season was just crap. From the bizarre decision to bulk up to the lacklustre effort to get back on track and prove the doubters wrong. He’s gone two steps backwards and basically ruined his United career doing that.

He can say what he wants about where he’s came from and his desire to get to the top and not caring about what others say but all this crap that he did at Everton each summer with his agent until he left seems to be happening again at United. I thought it would stop as he was now at a club he wanted to play for but it hasn’t. Serie A if that’s the choice will probably do well for him and he will no doubt win trophies there and notch up some decent goal tallies but I think he’s proven that he doesn’t have that dig deep mentality that the top top players have.

It annoys me as I liked him a lot as a player. If he stuck at it with United I think he’d have been remembered more than going to Juve/Inter.

He's a good player he just doesn't and hasn't ever suited the way we've played. Will do well.

Sadly he’s not mobile enough for the EPL, not just for us but any EPL team with the pace and intensity of the game here right now. Think he’s making a smart choice to go to Italy.

Spot on. For all his talk off the pitch, he very very rarely translated it on to the pitch. Just look at Ibrahimovic' time and impact here. Look at RVP. They both had that mentality to play up top for a club like United and back up the talk. Lukaku just isn't anywhere close to that ilk. He's never been the right striker for us.
