Luis Suarez

Kezman was slamming them in from 20-25 yards on a regular basis. Dont think he managed a single one from range for Chelsea.

Can't say I was particularly impressed with his overall game at PSV - there was little to suggest he'd succeed at Chelsea.

Other than his scoring record, I agree. But he was scoring all kinds of goals. He looked a decent player just not Chelsea quality. And then it turns out he's barely professional footballer quality and stuggled to find a foothold anywhere.

I watch Ajax every week, he's miles better than Huntelaar ever was, much more of an all-round player rather than a pure finisher like Huntelaar. Best Ajax player since Bergkamp, although Ibrahimovic also had his moments at Ajax.

I went to the Ajax-Juventus last night (made a little movie) and although Juve won, Suarez was by far the best player on the pitch, Chiellini had no idea how to handle him. Suarez has a hunger that I've rarely seen in a football player (Rooney has a similar hunger).

To compare him to Afonso Alves or Kezman is absolutely ridiculous: those players were known as lazy players in Holland and any scout would have known that. He's not an absolute killer like RvN or Huntelaar (who will still prove himself a top striker, watch my words) but he seems to have this ability to pull a rabbit out of his hat, much like Bergkamp did.

Seedorf, Davids, Edwin van der Sar, Ibrahimovic, Van der Vaart, Nigel de Jong, Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder, Ryan Babel, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Thomas Vermaelen ... none of these players were hailed in Amsterdam like Suarez has been... There's even talk that Suarez might be the new #14 (Cruyff's number)

Kezman never showed that he was anything but a one-dimensional poacher. Suarez has shown a bit more and certainly has better technique in-and-around the box.

Obviously £30million is ridiculous (how much for Kris Boyd who has a similarly outstanding record in a similarly crap league?) and I'd be surprised if he'd be good enough for a Barca or an Inter.

The Dutch league is miles better than the SPL.

A+ for that report.

perhaps he's been talking to forlan...therefore his interest in united.

i could see this lad doing well in the world cup, which would then add 10-15 million to his already high price.

Had they have been playing against the level of opponents that Suarez has been they probably would have. Or do you deny that the league is awful at the moment and nowhere near as strong as it used to be?

Fingers crossed... I haven't been that impressed with him in the national team though. He is good, has some tricks, but the "level" issue is a huge question mark.

I never had doubts about Forlan as a top class striker and big game player, he never seemed to do it for us but always did for the national team. With this guy the opposite seems to hold, against Brazil or Argentina I wouldn't be expecting the winning goal to come from him. Nothing to do with gutsy displays, just out of his depth.

Would love to be proved wrong come the France game

I don't deny that the Dutch league is awful at the moment... Look, I watch this crap every week, even though it's terrible (and it can be TERRIBLE!)!!! First of all, you should realise that the Dutch league has always been crap, even when Cruyff, Van Basten, Gullit, Bergkamp, Rijkaard, Seedorf etc were playing there.

Secondly, All I'm saying is that the public in Amsterdam has never been wowed by a player like they currently are by Suarez, since Litmanen and Bergkamp. Seriously, this guy is insanely good.

Perhaps he's just better to watch than the other "goalscoring machines" that have top scored in the Netherlands? All the same his record is not as good as some like Kezman and while that video you posted is nice, I just watched one just as nice with Kezman at PSV.

The thing is a striker can lose confidence when the goals arent coming so easily and then you end up with the crap performances Kezman put in for Chelsea. Perhaps Kezman wasnt ready yet to go to a top club and shouldnt have rushed it. Perhaps the same could be said of Suarez? Maybe thats the problem here. Just because you're playing great stuff over there doesnt mean you're ready for a top club in Spain or England.

If ever theres a case for waiting for a second tier club to sign a player, then see if he does well there for a year and then sign him from that second tier club then its players from Erividise. Yes, I know they'd cost a lot more having proven themselves but it sounds like he's going to cost a lot even now. So whats an extra £7 million to make sure he's able to adapt to a different level, in a different league and not just the latest good player to look like a God in the netherlands?

Kezman was lazy in Holland. Everyone in Holland knew it. The Chelsea scouts who picked him up didn't know what they were doing. It's no wonder Piet de Visser fired them! I never meant for the video to convince anyone of this guy's ability. Anyone who judges a player based on youtube videos is a complete moron.

Suarez won't lose confidence like Kezman did once he's no longer "mr. bigshot" because this kid has pure hunger. Not hunger for money like some players, but hunger to be the best. This guy is from Salto, Uruguay, the biggest dump in South America, but he's managed to become the best player for Ajax.

The usual criticisms that South American players face in the Netherlands (think Romario, Ronaldo, Alex, Gomes, etc) were all leveled to Suarez. He overcame his reputation of being a diver, he overcame his reputation of not being a team-player, and he totally shut up all his media critics in Holland. He was named captain of Ajax, no mean feat for a foreign player.

That sounds incredible.. I never knew that about him all I heard was that he had a big ego, was a diver and the lot.. So basically I only heard lots of negative stuff about him and very few positives (atleast about his behaviour and mental attributes as FM calls it) And yes thanks for the report it made a good read even though its quite short..

He really sounds and looks like a player we would need. Namely a goal scoring foward who is comfortable in wide areas. I'm not sure we will ever look at him though.

erm chief weren't you against bringing in a new striker?

(PS I am not pulling your leg here or anything, just 1 honest question to a fellow poster whose been here as long as I did) :)

Yes. Especially any forward who is incapable of operating like a top class winger. Fellows like Dzeko and Benzema who we've been looking at.

In comparison to those this lad like fellas like Di Maria and David Silva can play wide and upfront. Which would give us extra depth in attacking areas while most importantly, solving our left winger issue.

I haven't watched Suarez enough to build an opinion on him. Stating that he is really rated in Italy. In fact Juventus seems very interested in the guy. If his play is similar to that of Saha then we should sign him in. We need a guy who can both lead the line/drop deep when needed.

He is more like a C. Ronaldo than Saha. From what I've seen he is excellent out wide and down the middle.

I would think more like Robinho positionally.. I think he would be a good option.. He is young, talented & Has that Rooney like appetite to play..

Scored another hat-trick yesterday, that's 44 goals in 42 games this season, plus he can play wide forward in a front 3, he has to be worth a look IMO.

He'd be a dream signing IMO. If he fitted in well we'd never miss Rooney if Rooney got injured, we'd be able to play him and Rooney in a 4-3-3, and still be able to play him opposite Nani/Valencia with Rooney and whoever upfront in a 4-4-2.

In wake of the Hernandez signing, I don't see us buying yet another striker. Maybe we were put off his value, is he really valued at £35 mill, as the opening article suggests?

It depends. IMHO the evaluation of the article is inaccurate. Traditionally Ajax don't over price their players. I bet some thing closer to 23-25, maybe even much less would be able to convince them to sell.

And when it comes to him as a player. We could go for him as a wide man, since we've need a natural leftie for a while, or If we sell Berbatov, which might be very likely, he'd be a straight replacement.

I just wish we could look at him regardless.

I watch a lot of Eredivisie and I don't really rate him that high to be honest. Obviously he's got a great scoring record, but what you don't see is that he needs a lot of chances to actually score those goals. He also tends to score 3 or 4 goals against lesser opposition in games Ajax win 5-0 or 6-0, but when it's 0-0 with 10 minutes to go, he'll often be invisible and it's often someone else who scores that important goal for Ajax.

Remember Afonso Alves: he scored a shitload of goals in Holland, but only went to play for Middlesbrough and there he wasn't impressive either. Mind, I think Suarez is better than Alves, but he's more in the Kezman league. He scored a lot for PSV too, but turned out not to be good enough for the biggest teams, but good enough for smaller teams in Europe.

The thing is... the dutch league is not as strong as it used to be. And the defending is non-existent at times. It's just so much easier to score goals there, than in any other league of a decent level. So don't be fooled by the scoring stats of Suarez. Obviously, he's got quality, but it's more like Vilarreal, Atletico Madrid or Sevilla quality.

We have too many strikers looking to improve, they all need playing time..

He's different to our kids though, I mean he's scored 72 goals in the last 2 seasons, by improve I just meant fine tune but mostly he'd be ready to go, the kids are all very much works in progress.

It might sound like a weird statement considering we are talking about a player who has passed forty goals this season, but I dont consider him to be a natural goalgetter and I even doubt that his best position is centre forward. But I still think that he is top notch. In addition to his 32 league goals (seven from penalties), he has 16 assists (number one in Eredivise). He is young, has a great physic and is able to pull a rabbit out of his hat. In my opinion he would also give us options. Definitly one to watch, but I doubt we will.

Uruguay sensation Luis Suarez insists that he intends to stay put at Ajax for the foreseeable future.

The 23-year-old is one of the most highly-sought after strikers in Europe, with 32-goals to his name already this term.

That followed on from his tally of 30 last term, and hosts of clubs are understood to be keen.

Chelsea and Manchester United are reported to be leading the chase, but Suarez insists he is more than happy where he is.

The South American penned a new three-year deal in January this year, and he insists he would not have done so if he did not want to stay.

"I'm enjoying myself at Ajax," he told local Dutch television station AT5.

"I have not renewed my contract for nothing. I am here to stay."

Suarez is set to feature in this summer's World Cup finals, where he will look to form a potent strike-force with Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan.

The Dutch league is miles better than the SPL.

It has a bit more depth at the top but that's it. There's plenty of dross at the bottom of both leagues for strikers to boost their goal tallies.

Not sure you can read anything into that quote.

It's either: " I'll go if a big offer comes in" or " I have no ambition and would like to stay a big fish in a small pool"...

My money's on the former

I reallly don't think we will be in after another pure striker! Unless we get rid of Berba AND Owen! Fergie will have to go after someone who can both compliment Rooney and be strong enough to lead the line on his own!

And willing to possibly sit on the bench for all the big games.

The Ajax gaffer has made it clear that Suarez will only leave Amsterdam for one of Europe's best clubs...

Uruguayan international Luis Suarez has been in superb form this season for Ajax and the tricky attacker has already scored 33 Eredivisie goals in the 2009-10 campaign.

Suarez's outstanding performances haven't gone unnoticed in Europe's bigger leagues and several clubs are believed to be interested in signing the highly rated forward. However, Ajax head coach Martin Jol has made it clear that Suarez will only leave Amsterdam for one of the European giants.

"Tottenham Hotspur president Daniel Levy recently approached me to talk about Luis, but I told him that they can't afford him. He wasn't too happy when I said that," revealed Jol to De Pers.

"However, I know that Luis wouldn't leave Ajax for a club like Tottenham anyway. He will only leave us if the opportunity comes up to join one of Europe's best teams. He has developed into one of the leaders of our team."

European powerhouses such as Barcelona, Chelsea, Juventus and Inter have all been linked with a move for the 23-year-old in the past couple of months.
