Luis Nani | 2013/14 Performances

All we want is at least one winger with the ability to take people on and make meaningful passes into the attacking players. Nani might not have put in a 'world-class' performance but that was much more watchable than Ashley Young pinging in ridiculous diagonals for Welbeck.

This 5 year contract better mean something!

Are you kidding me? If we use Young as a yardstick, half of our academy players are good enough to start. Nani was old Nani, flashes of brilliance coupled with frustrating things which make me squeeze my balls. I will give it to you that he hasn't had lot of game time but he still needs to improve on those aspects which were frustrating as a fan to watch given the talent he has.

I guarantee you Ashley Young will still get lots of games ahead of Nani and Kagawa.

Yeah, it's the first time in a while that watching United play hasn't made me lose the very will to live.

I put that on Kagawa/Nani.

I'd almost forgotten what an offensive winger looked like.

Should always start.

This, for me Nani proved he's a guaranteed starter. One wing position is definitely sewn up, the other one is still up for grabs between Kagawa & Janzuaj, Zaha and Valencia.

What was frustrating that couldn't be explained by lacking sharpness? Had a few shots that blazed over but most weren't easy chances. I thought he was a little reserved in taking on people today but that let to a more measured approach.

On the whole I thought he was one of our better players and for me showed that he'll give us something extra. Got to play next game imo.

Feel the same way. This match and the janujizz show against crystal palace.

As frustrating as he is, at least he generally frustrates by trying something that doesn't come off. This is in direct comparison to players who frustrate by not trying to beat a player, take a player on, attempt a shot or through ball and just repeat the same tactic that has not worked again and again. Nani is easily the best winger we have, one of the most capable players in the squad and someone who should be starting more games than not.

I hope not. I agree Nani did enough to start in league regularly. If he gets in form and rhythm, we can have exciting and multifaceted attack.

I still have no idea why SAF signed him. Baffled. Hope he explains in his book.

Do you honestly think he'll be getting into stuff like that?

He saw a good player, he thought the bigger stage will see him go on to bigger and better, and it turns our we're too big for him. That's that.

Better than Young, but some exaggerate, he was good but not brilliant, but no more than you'd expect from a player coming back though, give him a chance without making out hes the second coming as you only seem to end up slating him more when he then has a poor game!

I'd say that was rather good a performance given his lack of games. That bit of play when he refused to play Kagawa which would surely result in goal was fecking frustrating, though. Expect big things from him this season.

I'd so much rather have the frustration of Nani popping up trying different things, and jumping between the sublime and the ridiculous than the tedious shower that Young serves up every week.

This is obviously true. Nani offers something completely different - and I think this something is much needed for us. His decision making is so-so at times, as it's always been, and he did look a bit rusty to me in general. That's nothing to moan about, though. He did reasonably well and he should be played regularly in the fixtures ahead.

He also needs to get on the blower to Ronaldo - learn to press his shots down...

Tired towards the end, but it's not really that easy to play with Buttner too, played much better with Rafael on the pitch, or whenver he had someone else except Buttner to combine with.

I liked a lot of what he tried to do tonight, though it maybe didn't quite click as we'd have liked.

Hopefully this is the start of a long run of games - he can only benefit from that, as can we obviously.

Nani's a sports car slowly easing up the gears. Got into 3rd before he got subbed off. Can't wait to see him kick it up to 5th.

It's just the massive difference in a player who is happy anywhere across the front. It offers up so many more options to the team. Play it short and he can come inside on to his left or right. He can hug the line and whip in a cross either drilled or pick someone out. Neither of the other two wingers can offer that.

It's just that Nani has got stacks more ability and confidence then either of the other 2. They are rabbits in the headlights when in possession. Today really showed what we have had to put up with from the other 2 for so long. Nani just has a better picture about the game and can create things with clever passing, not to mention his close control being light years better than the other 2. I will be referring to 'them' as the 'other 2' from now on.

Yeah and today I thought he was quite reserved in how he attacked, he didn't take people on like we know he can. That's the other thing with Nani for me, becuase he's happy coming inside or going down the line on either flank he can play a more reserved game and still be much more impactful. Obviously he can have his poor games but I think it gets overplayed. Certainly the "frustrating" stuff. It always feels with Nani that if he takes a shot and it doesn't go in that he's made a bad decision.

It's all teed up for him really if he can get into consistent form.

Did well tonight if a little wasteful, which you'd expect. The problem with Nani has usually been his decision making but he seemed to be ok on that front.

Should really start at the weekend.

I'll put up with a few Nani brainfarts a game because you know he is capable of magic in a big game. He tries things, sometimes they come off, other times they don't. The difference is that he has the confidence to keep trying things even if they don't come off. The other 2 don't have these qualities and go into their shell when their limited games are exposed.

Nani can do things that young and Valencia could only dream of seeing....I think either one of young and valencia will give way for Nani and I hope that neither young or valencia will be in the first 11 very soon....Welbeck on the right....Nani on left with Januzaj and Zaha pushing them for their place.....shame we can't find a place in the team for kagawa! Rooneys form means kagawa may have to get used to the bench

Thought he was good tonight. Adds an unpredictability that Young and Valencia just cannot provide. Sure sometimes it ends up with him launching the ball out of the Solar System but it's worth that for everything else he brings.

I think it was simply to do with lacking that bit of match fitness/sharpness, so he was playing within himself.(maybe protecting his hamstrings?) I think he was just easing himself in. It's always going to be harder to do that against a full strength Liverpool who are all up speed. As he plays more games in the coming weeks, with a better midfield behind him, he will improve.

Oh yh it wasn't a knock on him it was more than yesterday he didnt even really have a go at people like we know he can and he still put in a much more creative and involved performance than we've seen from a lot of our other attackers.

Even rusty, Nani is more of a threat than the other wingers. He deserves a chance to regain his form with a run in the side. Hopefully he takes his chance because he could be a real plus for us this season.

I'm convinced that Moyes will use him more and more as the season progresses. He'll be a first team player, or else the new 5yr contract doesn't really make sense.

5 year backup for Young?

I thought he played very well. He looked reluctant to run at full pelt and he shied away from tackles, understandably enough. His short passing is very good though, and he was able to dribble himself out of some tough spots. Good game, but I think there is more to come.

It was a bit of a mixed bag I thought, some good stuff, some bad stuff, some weird stuff... basically a lacking match practice Nani performance.

Oh, and he has to be our worst regular corner taker out of the 4 of them? Bloody woeful

Nani in 1 game shows why he is still our best winger, and we would be nuts to let him leave.

Sure he has moments where he sometimes makes the wrong decision, or tries something silly and loses possession at the wrong time, but what he does on the ball more than makes up for the bad points.

His ability to go down the line, or comfortably come inside and pick a pass/shot really is invaluable.
