Just a thought.. We once sold Hughes, Kanchelskis and ince in one summer

Guess what? We won the double

The most successful seasons under Fergie almost invariably came after relatively big summer shake-ups.

We sold Hughes, Kanchelskis and Ince, promoted the kids: Double.
We bought Stam and Yorke for record fees (and Blomqvist): Treble.
Bought Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves, got Tévez on a loan: Premier League and Champions League.

Because that's how Fergie likes his wingers, to an extent. it's why he loves players like Valencia and Young who can do a great job defensively as well. And it's probably to an extent why he's just never rated Nani that highly.

When we have gone 4-3-3 Nani was usually preferred to other wingers (Real being a recent example) because he's able to let him play a less restricted role in that case, but in 4-4-2 I don't think he's ever really trusted him enough.

Hmm, I honestly don't think Nani's defensive work is any less than Young's.

Mainly because I'm against the norm in not thinking that Nani is God's gift to United. People here over-rate him. He's a good player, and on his day he can be unplayable. But I reckon I could actually count the amount of times he's had those type of games. The scores of games he's played as his alter-ego: the wrong time to dribble, wrong time to pass, wrong time to shoot Nani is just too annoying. When he was yonger, many/some slated him while I defended him because of his lack of experience/decision making. Now it's the other way around. He's old enough now to have learnt all that and yet he still makes those frustrating errors.

If Rooney played like Nani on his average day, Rooney would have been hoarded out of the club by some of you.

I like Nani, slightly less after he refuses to be co-operated with the contract talks (unless there haven't been any contract talks, in that case clearly United doesn't rate him high enough). But yeah, I still like him.

I just think he's not good enough on a consistent level for us. It's my fecking opinion - it doesn't need to match the norm around here. I admit, I may have been a bit too exaggerative in this thread at times but that's because I'm just shocked at how highly rates he is on here. In terms of importance to our team, I wouldn't put him anywhere near the top 7 at least.
"On his day he can be unplayable...there, that's one very good reason for keeping him. Not many players are truly unplayable.

Rooney has had some absolutely shocking performances for us, did you miss them?

I don't seem to remember Nani not co-operating (as such) with any contract talks but I do remember talk of him being unhappy with the terms of the contract. As we don't know the details of the contract it's rather unfair to lay any blame on Nani isn't it. The concerns he had over the contract may well have been very justified.

The manager has changed. Nani supposedly isn't happy because he didn't get enough playing time last season, before the manager changed.

Playing time that was given to other players, including Young, despite Nani being the only winger last season who at any point put in an above adequate performance.

Basically we'd be selling our best winger for less that what we value our worst, which is quite silly, regardless of what's gone on inbetween.
Good post. 6 lines that says it all really. :)

I still remember this performance vs Ac Milan where he was simply electric, particularly the run and ball to rooney @ 2.10!

That's the funny thing: if Rooney and Nani were to return to anywhere near the form they had at that time, we'd be a pretty scary team (at least attacking-wise.)

I've never seen a player have so many repeating you tube videos posted about them, EVER. That includes the players United have had which can be considered world class and the best in the PL era ie Scholes, Rooney, Giggs, Cantona, Ronaldo, Keane etc.

Probably because those players had about 15 of those a season at least whereas its either 'that Arsenal game', the Chelsea game, or the AC Milan game with Nani.

Call it selective judgement but I prefer to remember him in the Chelsea games from last season :p

Still hes a great player when on top form and 8.5 million is a piss take, hes worth about 15-18 at present imo.

It's not selective, mate. We (comp makers) get hit with copyright claims meaning that our videos are taken down. There were many Nani comps on YouTube - a lot of them from 09/10. I'm hoping that I can escape the copyright claims, which I've so far managed to achieve. I'm still in disbelief.

He deserves a chance this season, can still prove a useful member of our squad. Just 26 years old, peak of his abilities

Bloody hell, just had a look at his Wikipedia entry, didn't know this

Nani was born on 17 November 1986 in Praia, Cape Verde, off the West African coast.[5] Nani emigrated with his family to Portugal at an early age. Nani was raised by his aunt Antonia in the Santa Filomena estate in the Amadora district of Lisbon after being abandoned by his parents.[6] At the age of five, his father left for a holiday in Cape Verde but never returned and when he was 12 years old, his mother left Portugal to start a new life in the Netherlands.[6] Nani has nine siblings from his mother, of which he is the youngest, and five from his father.[7] Nani gained his nickname from an elder sister at a young age.[8]

Fair play to him, photos from his facebook page show that he cares about kids who have similar destiny, every other week he is on some charity events around the Portugal/world, even during his holidays, he seems like a really nice person outside football pitch.

Would love him to hang around and get another shot with us. A pure quality winger who when on form is a handful for anyone.

Ranieri has apprently denied interest in Nani. Hope so.

Ranieri on Nani: "No, just rumours. At this moment we are finished our market but until the end something could happen but no Nani at moment

I just want to see him back to his best in a United shirt. Nani and Zaha on both wings sounds terrifying.

18 months of performances as good as Rooney, could make a lot of videos

Obviously he's been here far longer than those 18 months and in the rest of the time he's been up and down. But Nani is one of (our) few attacking players who have reached that level in recent times. If he could get back to it he'd play for any team in the country

Berba did reject Fiorentina though.

I guess all we can hope is that he hits the 2010 form and be useful. Or may be we can con Levy into accepting him as part of the deal for Bale.

For all we know Nani could have rejected a bunch of offers. He already rejected Barcelona after his second season according to the player. Importantly, we actually want to keep Nani

This in not after his second season but after his 6th. All we know is that the Russian club rejected him last season and Gala didn't want him this season.

Since we aren't getting anywhere signing anyone I'd love to see us give Nani a contract extension, that would be a boost going into the season. I just can't understand why we'd want to let him see out his deal or risk trying to negotiate when he gets to 6 months left in January.

He signed for Red Star Belgrade!

Just kidding.

Obviously because we don't feel his performances and contribution have merited the sort of contract he wants. Since it doesn't look like even the clubs who have endless funds are willing to give him a huge contract, if we do that and he doesn't improve or becomes more consistent we'll have trouble getting rid. I'm OK with keeping him for another year, even if he'll be out of contract. Maybe Moyes will get more out of him and suddenly both sides will find a mutual agreement. Maybe it won't happen and he'll leave for free. We won't get that much by selling him now anyway.

If we think so little of him then we might as well take the £8M for him as letting his contract run down, and then if he has a good season, hoping he'll sign a new one is a big risk. Giving him a 3 year extension at the least would have seen him go into the season with a confidence boost.

Give him a contract and play him. Fresh start for everyone, Nani included. We wouldn't get a replacement anywhere near as good as him for the fees being bandied about.

Nani will come good. With Zaha on the squad Nani will have to compete for minutes, and compete he will.

And I'm a well known Nani doubter here. About a year ago I argued that Bale vastly exceeded Nani in quality and I was laughed at, which I was okay with, by I'm telling you now Nani will be on a mission to regain his good name.

We will lift the English prem trophy and Nani will be a big part of our success. Laugh again, if you must.

Agree. Zaha and him on the wings will be some sight (given how hot they are of course).

Supposedly he's been offered to Monaco (whatever that means):

"He has been proposed to us," Vasilyev told French newspaper L'Equipe. "He is a very good player, but there have been no talks so far.
"We have already changed our group quite a bit and we also want to offer opportunities to our young players.
"We still have time to make a few alterations before the end of the transfer window, if needed."
