Ridiculously overrated on the caf, but a useful player and adds a dimension to us. His sale would necessitate the signing of another player in his position - which I am all for; United a traditionally a side very reliant on width and talented wingers, but our current crop are distinctly underwhelming.

I'm just going to put my head in the sand and hope the windows closes without anything happening. Pretty much the opposite of Rooney.

If we actually did land Bale, I'd happily sell Nani to anyone who'd want him.

But short of that (well, Ronaldo too, but that goes without saying), you really can't do too much better than Nani when he's in form. Problem is, of course, his form drifts in and out. We all Nani to maintain to form, but when was the last time he put in four matches straight that can be truly described as outstanding performances? We may have go back 4-5 years for that.

Just a thought.. We once sold Hughes, Kanchelskis and ince in one summer

Guess what? We won the double

Under Ferguson...

I'm not one of these doom and gloom types, but we just can't expect that to happen anymore without him. Regardless of who's in charge.

4-5 years? He was in the PFA Team of the Year and our Player's Player of the Year in 10/11, you don't think he put together 4 good games in a row in that time? Last season he wasn't given a chance and the season before he started out well and only drifted towards the end of the season when rumors about his contract began.

Selling him and Rooney in the same summer would remove at least a third of our total goals and assists in the past few seasons.

I'm not saying that Kagawa and Zaha don't have potential, but both of the above are proven at the top level.

And for only 15m...seems very odd.

So many people have used the phrase "when on form" when talking about Nani.

About sums him up really.

We won the title last season without him - he's not as big of a loss as some of you are making him out to be. Zaha is a good replacement for him, and he has the potential to be a better player than Nani - IN MY OPINION.

Nani is too much of an off-on player. I'll honestly be very happy with a transfer fee in the £14million region.

I don't think I've read a rational comment from you in this thread yet.

Replace it with 'when given a run in the team' then, seeing as when he's given a run of games he usually performs well. Up until Carragher tried to snap his leg he was brilliant for a long stretch of time, there's no reason he can't replicate that this season if he's given the opportunity.

Agreed, whenever he gets a run he beds in really well. To be fair I didn't think he was particularly awful this year despite people bemoaning the form of him and Valencia when they mention our wings. He played alright-to-well on the few chances he got this year, certainly better than Valencia who somehow played 39 games for us this season. I've got my hopes on Evra/Baines and Nani being Moyes new Baines - Pienaar on the left-hand side, except obviously Nani has far more to his game than Pienaar

I agree. That season he was our PPOTY he was great but for one reason or another (and we've heard them all on this forum) he's had issues with consistancy aside from that 18 months or so.

Remember this?

How do you think the comparison would look after the last 100? :)

Mainly because I'm against the norm in not thinking that Nani is God's gift to United. People here over-rate him. He's a good player, and on his day he can be unplayable. But I reckon I could actually count the amount of times he's had those type of games. The scores of games he's played as his alter-ego: the wrong time to dribble, wrong time to pass, wrong time to shoot Nani is just too annoying. When he was yonger, many/some slated him while I defended him because of his lack of experience/decision making. Now it's the other way around. He's old enough now to have learnt all that and yet he still makes those frustrating errors.

If Rooney played like Nani on his average day, Rooney would have been hoarded out of the club by some of you.

I like Nani, slightly less after he refuses to be co-operated with the contract talks (unless there haven't been any contract talks, in that case clearly United doesn't rate him high enough). But yeah, I still like him.

I just think he's not good enough on a consistent level for us. It's my fecking opinion - it doesn't need to match the norm around here. I admit, I may have been a bit too exaggerative in this thread at times but that's because I'm just shocked at how highly rates he is on here. In terms of importance to our team, I wouldn't put him anywhere near the top 7 at least.

I know it's your opinion, and you're welcome to hold it and post it as you do. I just think it's hysterical, irrational bollocks that makes up the majority of it. No-one thinks he's god's gift ffs, stop exaggerating.

I don't believe any one is doubting that you're capable of counting. Most of us can count these days.

I still remember this performance vs Ac Milan where he was simply electric, particularly the run and ball to rooney @ 2.10!

His performance against Bayern was terrific as well. The first and only time he's been given a completely free attacking role.

This is what I don't get. Why was his role in the team so restricted? I remember he used to cut in from the right flank and score screamers with his left but he never quite did that from the left even though his dominant foot is the right one. I feel he wasn't utilised properly and there were a lot of restrictions placed upon his general style of play by the coaching staff. Give him a free role on either of the flanks and watch him create mayhem in the opposition's half.

Because that's how Fergie likes his wingers, to an extent. it's why he loves players like Valencia and Young who can do a great job defensively as well. And it's probably to an extent why he's just never rated Nani that highly.

When we have gone 4-3-3 Nani was usually preferred to other wingers (Real being a recent example) because he's able to let him play a less restricted role in that case, but in 4-4-2 I don't think he's ever really trusted him enough.

He sure did trust Ronaldo with a free role on the wings when he was here and I think Nani offers more defensively than Ronaldo did.

I disagree. Ferguson has viewed wingers as the primary attacking source. They were expected to be as hard working as anyone else on the pitch. They weren't restricted. And he rated an on form Nani highly.

Nani along with Vida and Valencia apparently took part in a practice game. So maybe he isn't in Monaco as reported.

I will be very disappointed if we sell him and don't bring in an experienced replacement.

The trouble is, outside of the seemingly ungettable Bale and Ronaldo, who is out there right now that could replace him?

There's a few decent wing types in Italy. El Shaarawy could possibly be moulded into a genuine goalscoring wide man, Lamela looks like he's going to be a superstar with no exaggeration and the speedster that is Insigne.

Most likely as hard to get as Bale though. But that's the nature of 'improving' the team. You have to put up or shut up.

I agree with people who say te best solution for United is to keep him and try to squeeze out as much as we can from him. He's capable of being a top player, but he's quite fragile both mentally and physically with constant injuries and takes a while to get that run of form going when things go wrong.
