Luckhurst: United prepared to move for a holding midfielder in January

As ridiculous as it sounds, tomorrow’s result could have a major say in whether we progress another deal before the end of summer.

Whilst I think we have approached our transfers In a more methodical way since Ole came in, it still feels as though we have a knee jerk in us, both fans and management.

Because he is 4th or 5th choice when everyone is fit, he doesn't have an impact in our attacking play so is easily replaceable by a youth player and he would bring money. Money we could use to sign a player we actually need and who could contribute more to the team effort to win silverware for the club.
He's not

This attitude is why we suck at selling players. James price is the highest it will ever be. We will struggle to sell him next season when he has not featured much and more people realise he's not good enough for this level. We have Sancho, Pogba, Greenwood, Rashford, Mata and Elanga for the 2 wing positions. We can even keep Amad if we want. Just sell him ffs.

We don't sell young players no matter what, we don't sell academy players no matter how old they are, we don't sell star players, we don't sell first team players who can be upgraded and we don't sell squad players.
Who the feck then we can sell? Coaches?

This with James and Lingard is mind blowing

Ole seems pretty bullish that one more should hopefully be coming on that makes it seems like they have something in the pipe line they are working on. I think for sure they probably need to move some people on first mind but wonder who this could be. Trippier, Cama, or a DM.
Think we might even go to 2 more before deadline . Neves and Trippier if we move some on.

@Chairman Steve

I don't think Chong has ever looked United quality -

But what's happened is that he is playing in a new position (Centre midfield) and looking like a better/new player.

Not sure if he is still good enough or not, but is playing like a new player.

Chong has been sensational in his first Birmingham-matches. If he continues like this - we should consider taking him back next season.

Let’s face it, does it matter if we sign someone else before deadline day?

Ole won’t start them until Xmas anyway :wenger:

We should be panicking a bit. I hope we are. Doesn't mean I want us to buy someone shite for the sake of it, but surely we can't go the rest of the season with these options.

Forget that I am all for buying for the sake of it after seeing that shite today

We are doing nothing unless we sign a midfielder of some kind in the next few weeks.

No truer thing has ever been said and perhaps today woke up those thinking all was hunky dory after beating Leeds

Saw someone talking 20m for Chong.

Unbelievable.
He'll go for 2m down the line I expect. If that.

In fairness we haven't even once started our 2 actual signings yet.
Until those 2 are bedded in we can't really judge the improvements of what we've already done.

Oh I don’t know, someone once said to me after the birth of my first child “You’ll never have peace of mind again” and that’s right up there with “Martial is shit”

He certainly was today

It's not going to fix our atrocious midfield though mate, people are talking about missing McTominay and that he's the best we have, the latter part I think is a fair shout but he's a bench player at any true top side. We basically have 3 midfielders, McFred and Matic who is changing CM to Corpse Midfielder at this point, as VdB is clearly not fancied and Pogba is finally being used as an attacker. We are short of depth and quality in this area of the team.

Yes we could do with a worldly in there.
But we were never making 3 huge signings in 1 summer. I'm still amazed we got 2 done.

Mourinho got 4 and did Lvg get 6 in his first season and 4 in his second? We got Varane for less than we paid for players like Mkhitaryan, Fred and AWB, surely there's £35M in the kitty for one of Neves/Bissouma/Camavinga.

Quite simply Jesse has to be sold in the next 9 days, surely Leicester or West Ham can find £20m

Maybe but today shows he hasn't got the luxury to wait for a year
Yep and we all knew that. That’s why I think draw could be a blessing in disguise.

People always talk about games at the end of the season being decisive but no, two points dropped today are just as important

Look at Chelsea playing Jorginho next to Kovacic. Both technical, but not defensively anything strong. Look how having two ball carriers and press resistant players can work even if you don't have a DM available right now. We're so reticent to do anything other than play with a defence first midfield that we scare ourselves out of being able to use good technical midfielders to run a game.

Yeah bang on pal and it's a damn shame

The game was frustrating to watch from our perspective. Jorginho and Kovacic repeatedly took the ball confidently with their first touch and moved it on. Our midfielders can’t do that with any sort of consistency and it’s why we consistently struggle against aggressive teams like Southampton today.

Well he has been quoted this week as saying he has been told no a few times in relation to transfers so whilst it is not Mourinho levels of toys out of the pram I think he is pretty clearly signaling that he has made it clear to the board he wants Trippier and a new midfielder and it is now out of his hands.

Yep try telling that to the brains trust in charge of this team obsessed with two holding midfielders

Why on earth is he being told no when there is a MASSIVE issue in that area of the field, so ridiculous

Part of that is due to those players; the other part of that is how their wing-backs, two wide CB's and front three move in relation to the two CM's having the ball. They always have options because Tuchel coaches the shit out of them to know where, when and how to move so that happens.

Us, on the other hand. AWB never knows whether to go higher and wider, or hold position parallel to the CB's; the team as a whole doesn't know how to deal with being pushed back deep into their own half, and so we try to play out, but it's a whole lot of instinct and not a lot of practiced instruction.

The problem - and worry - is that us sticking with what we have in midfield hurts us as it's not good enough and never was. It makes sense to wait out a window for a specific player when you're buying from a position of strength. Unfortunately for us, selling clubs can see we are even weaker than before with it being questionable whether Matic is even a PL player by now.

It doesn't rest easy knowing we've got only two players, in tandem, to play back there, and if one from the pairing is injured or suspended, the other looks half the player and cannot be relied upon in his own right. But worse than that, playing McFred incessantly will lead to burn out and fatigue by March, if not sooner, which is awful when you consider how much money we're wasting on players who we can't shift as well as our supposed ambitions for this campaign.

It'll be a bitter taste to have a net improved defence and attack that is brought down to the same mean as last season by a midfield unit that is actually worse this term than last.

We have to pull something out of the bag between now and the end of the window, all said without drama or hyperbole - our midfield strength and options are that bad.

ARAMBARRI TO SOLVE MAN UTD MIDFIELD CONUNDRUM
Manchester United are reportedly planning a shock late transfer window move to sign Getafe midfielder Mauro Arambarri.

The 25-year-old is one of the best all-round midfielders in LaLiga, where he has shone at Getafe since 2017.

He’s made 143 appearances during his time at the LaLiga outfit and has caught the eye with his all-action displays.

He’s been mentioned as a player United were keeping their eyes on in the past. Now, according to AS, they have been given strong encouragement that a deal could be finalised this summer.

The Uruguay international has just two years left on his deal and appears unlikely to sign an extension. And Getafe know that the time is right to sell now to maximise his market value.

As per AS, Barcelona have already been in touch with regards a possible deal. However, with finances tight, they are looking at a loan-to-buy option.

However, Getafe would prefer the straight cash sale. And that has reportedly encouraged United’s director of football John Murtough to make his move.

A deal worth £25m has been mooted for a player also being tracked by Valencia and Atletico Madrid.

This is the fellow who can't pass the football very well isn't it? Perfect for us.
