Louis van Gaal's tactics

I said it before, but I bet LVG will stumble upon a three man midfield (possibly Schmidfield and Herrera) with Mata, Memphis, Rooney as the attacking three and it will be good.

And everybody will wonder why he didnt do it from the start :P

Although he should have never dropped Herrera on the bench in the first place, I'd give him a lot of props in giving him the chance/faith to start this important game and also the foresight to let him continue into the 2nd half.

I also think bringing on Hernandez and Young was a good move. The obvious choice would have been to bring on Fellani but in terms of seniority, those two deserved their chance more (due to their match fitness, not having got sent off etc). It sets the tone for everyone get's a fair whip. I still think it's a slightly dangerous 'perform because I gave you a chance' mentality because whilst that might instill fight and responsibility in some, it also brings fear of failure and lack of comfort. Take your pick really.

It'd be interesting to see what he does with Januzaj now. Will he be relegated to the bench for 10-15 cameos or will he still get starts?

Not saying he is that old, but look at the Hargreaves situation. If VG uses bastian right, we have one hell of a player. I'm hoping we get atleast 35 games out of bastian this year
Whenever fit and being the right option, he should play imo. He and Carrick can share that position so he neither would be overused

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me at all if Herrera is near the top of the pecking order. This early in the season dropped points can be recovered and besides, the pressure to win the league isn't exactly on. If however we somehow shit the bed and got knocked out of the CL before the group stage, that would be catastrophic. In that light it makes some sense to keep Herrera ready to go, but not commit him. Make sure he is healthy and ready for the most important match in the first half of the season.

Of course this is just a hypothetical. I suppose we will find out what position Herrera has in the squad in the coming weeks.

With Van Gaal in charge, I do think we have considerably more chance of winning the European Cup than we do winning the league. I have no basis for saying that; just pure gut feeling.

Yea, I liked having Young on, I just wish he had taken more runs at the fullback because I'd be very interested to see what happens with a quick winger across from Memphis.

That midfield and attack is like the super model we all want to marry

I wonder if we've actually been given instructions NOT to counter attack or play a risky pass? How many times do we see us bursting forwards and then pulling the ball back when there is no perfect pass to play.

Isn't this one of Van Gaal's golden rules? Never to risk losing possession?

Just wait till we start hoofing it up to Fellaini with twenty minutes to go.

That's down to the players. They lack confidence in their own ability to play a good through pass or a pass to the feet. This lack of confidence is also resulting in the players not playing in a total football approach. Case in point: Smalling moving up to midfield alongside Schneiderlin with Schweinsteiger dropping back. Smalling was open in midfield for a pass, and Schweinsteiger decides against that, instead playing 1-2's with Schneiderlin before playing it to Blind and moving back to midfield with Smalling going back to defence.

It seems like the players have got the passing triangles, team shape, and phases of play on point. They just need to trust each other and themselves more along with the total football approach. If that's not going to happen, we'll need players who are better on the ball and more confident in their abilities.

Us chasing is the best test of LVG's tactics. Posession, passing accuracy etc etc count for shit when you are losing. Fans only care about the end result at this point.

At this rate, we'll have to give City the ol' Spurs food poisoning treatment. But then City would definitely end up shitting all over us...

he knows more than we do - really because the world knew long ball was coming after the first goal by the swans.

Oh it's going to be a drubbing when we face them! Dreading the visit to the Etihad already!

Boring football. It might be suited to European style, but I don't think he's made much progress in the Premier League in the way we play football since Moyes' days.

Aside from those 3-4 games last season, it's been too slow, too static, too safe football. And if the passing philosophy doesn't work, just hoof it to Fellaini. He has to take responsibility and change things, but he won't.

I'll repeat what I said 2 weeks ago, if he doesn't reinforce before Tuesday he is gone by the end of the season

For all his talk about his 'philosophy' and making the ball work, we usually end up lumping it towards Fellaini... Not a very complicated concept.

I was willing to give him a chance last season because it was his first season.

But he's spent so much and we're still dreadful to watch.

Must say he has lost me a bit. All those millions spent and he needs to rely on hoofball to hope for goals.

It's reaching boiling point now. When I was excited to see us play some possession football I envisaged us being a slightly shitter version of Barcelona once it got going. However it's clear we aren't going to get anything remotely like that. We don't use our possession to create intricate one touch passing triangles in the final third or anything of the sort. We just hold onto it playing the safest passes possible for the sake of it and creating nothing.

If things stay like this for much longer then we should just think about getting Klopp in and playing some balls to the wall, end to end stuff. Even if the results aren't any better it would be much more entertaining seeing us draw 3-3 than this dour shite.

I can't wait until this man leaves the hell out of here. Got two seasons and money but still far proper team

Im suprised youve only just lost some faith.

Its been the same shit for 12 months. Weve drained all creativity from our team. We are a shambles in defense. God awful football side.

Oh and he spent 250 million to put us in the same position as Moyes did.

Well done Louis van Gaal and stick your philosophy up somewhere.
