Louis van Gaal's tactics

Our problem has always been breaking down stubborn defences. Our record against the big teams last year shows that when the opponent actually comes out and attacks us, we can dominate them.

Not that it hasn't been a good performance tonight mind.

If Herrera is dropped VG can feck himself, a goal and a assist that's more than carrick, bastian, Morgan have combined

After an absolutely catastrophic 45 minutes, yes.

But of course the caf wint remember than and will focus on the ~20 minutes in the second half where he did well.

He had an average game on the ball really. Off the ball, he was pretty poor and provided nowhere near the amount of cover Schneiderlin provides.

I like the idea of the #10 being a second striker, but unless Januzaj improves then I'd like to see the #10 revert to a traditional role and allow either Herrera or Mata to stay there. Herrera can afford to take risks as well playing further up behind a set midfield of Schx2 or with Carrick.

What happened when he was put in that advanced role? Assist and a goal. VG plays him in a midfield 2, when he played in the advanced role, we saw the real Herrera. He is perfect in that free range role, and suits it much better than Janazaj

Most of the people wanted him alongside schneiderlin in a midfield 2.

Herrera as the #10 made a huge difference.

Not just to his own game, but to the whole team. Its clear as day.

Herrera is better in that advanced role, the weapons Herrera has got is perfect for that attacking role, we factor in his mobility, that also brings that mata Herrera partnership into the fold that Herrera is closer to mata, but also can pick out depay and rooney. That is why he would be gold in that advanced attacking midfield role, and with the protecting Herrera can fill in those pockets between the midfield and the striker, and he can score goals

I agree with that, but you initially compared him with Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Carrick.

I was, but what I meant he is our CM that can assist and score goals. The biggest head scratcher is? How Janazaj can get games ahead of Herrera, really want that Herrera and mata partnership to be given another go, with Herrera player in the advanced role. Herrera reminds me of lampard, he is has that goal threat from shooting distance

Still seems like our best midfield. Hopefully we see it soon

Bastian is someone I would use on occasions, I actually think fellaini should be one of our 3 midfielders.

Morgan
Mata herrera fellaini Depay
Rooney

That is the midfield and attack I see has our best team for most games. How we set up sat I hope realistically is

Carrick Morgan
Mata Herrera depay
Rooney

Herrera and mata are closer together, and Rooney has more players with intelligence that can play those roles like a boss, which Janazaj just does not provide

You'd prefer Fellaini to Schweinsteiger? You can't be serious

Bastian is best used in certain games, overplaying him he gets injured. A fine wine needs to be used for the best games

Fellaini does provide us a plan B from set pieces, and he is a goal treat. I would use bastian in the very big games

The three assists for Rooney came from the three behind in Memphis, Herrera and mata.

If Lvg doesn't play these four on Sunday I will very surprised

Schweini is not 40 yet plus he and any of our other midfielders are better than Fellaini. Play him upfront where he brings the most value

Not saying he is that old, but look at the Hargreaves situation. If VG uses bastian right, we have one hell of a player. I'm hoping we get atleast 35 games out of bastian this year

The first goal for me was standout and probably indicator of what LvG means having all players on same wavelength and playing as per a common philosophy etc. The pass from Darmian in defense was a good one to start with. It did look a bit risky initially but you can see how a player from defensive position moved into space when Brugge players were putting other defenders under pressure by closing down and Darmian played a perfect pass from right side touchline. That did open up the forward movement and allowed a run with the ball and then it was again a good understanding upfront between Rooney and Memphis. Even Januzaj I think bit of part with his movement at last stage. It was a simple move from when ball was played to Memphis and how he dribbled near the box but to have that much of space, the build up from back was key.

5 games in, unbeaten, 7 points and empathically into Champions League.

A near perfect start to the season by LVG - deserves our thanks and credit.

Its no coincidence that our best period of play this season has come when Ander Herrera is playing furthest forward in a 3 man midfield/No.10 type role, it was refreshing to see, until he got subbed 15 mins later but suppose by then the job had been done.

He was on a yellow so best just to save him.

Exactly. Bruges made it so easy for us to pick them off on the counter, our attackers had so much space.

Nice to see us play really quick, expansive football and some of the passing angles we created were fantastic. Not taking anything away from a good performance but it almost feels as though LVG's tactics are designed to soak up pressure and counter with one small problem, 90% of sides in the Premiership defend against us.

All those articles about lackluster attack and whatever else look really stupid now.

Think if we focused more on breaking with speed instead of dominating possession so much and just forcing teams to park the bus as we did today, we'd have a lot more success in the prem as well with our play. Combine possession play with counters basically, because Rooney, Memphis and Mata are all a lot more suited to counter attacking then breaking down static defences.

Reading some posts, not sure that some here understand why something looks improved etc.

I'm sure Hererra will feature as #10 in Europe and against big teams but he'll sit out in the league.
