Louis van Gaal: "I am - or maybe was - a very successful manager."

A footballing managerial great. The idol of many and the one who created the path and basis on which Pep, mou base their tactics on. I hope he resigns and saves himself some image. Its should not end like this for him, but not everyone has the perfect ending. I think he is an old man in his 60's goin to lose his job, i feel very sad, i hope he is happy soon. I know united need to move on, i just wished, we could end this in the best way for louis.

He's expecting to be sacked, that post-match interview, his demeanour, particularly at the end of the interview. It's a shame but I think he's lost the players. He's not addressing the issue which is the creation of chances, he keeps banging on about possession and control. Writing is on the wall for him.

Yes he was bad but somehow people have this notion that if he is sacked, the next guy will just need to press a button to have us play how the fans want.

Same thing happened after Moyes need sacked and here we are.

If the next guy is Mourinho, I'm confident we can get things going.

He has made some big mistakes, especially with regard to our attack - selling RvP, AdM, Hernandez and bringing in only two youngsters in Martial (on the last day of the transfer window) and Memphis. But I feel sad for him.

I'd agree with those who feel slightly sorry for him. I've watched his teams as far back as Ajax when they beat Juve in 95 I think it was and have massive respect for him and believe if he had time on his side he would turn this around. I can see what kind of vision he has for us and it's a huge shame we are unlikely to see it as I think if he could have got us to where he sees us we would be easily in the top 2 teams in the world.

Sad to see him looking like a slightly beaten man but he seems to accept this is football and doesn't look for excuses or place blame. Still the English press are vultures and the pundits as well have been sticking the boot into him for ages. Hardly surprising the English don't like an arrogant "foreigner" coming in and telling them the inventors of the beatiful game how it should be played.

It might not work out for him at United but I am sure he will still be remembered by many as one of the greats of the game. At least those who have watched football for more than a few years.

at least he is taking it on the chin. That line ' i used to be a successful manager' is brutally cutting on himself for a man supposedly so ego driven

Have you not seen the countless times he has thrown a player under the bus in his post match pressers?

I'm sorry, but the fecking pressure this man is putting on the players to finish their only fecking chance is detrimental to us.

This. Its annoying how he thinks creating 2 half chances is enough for 2 goals.

I feel very bad for him. I like him a lot, but it's not working out and I really think the best thing is for him to resign and leave with his dignity in tact. It's a shame, but it's brutal in football - what can you do?
I would still have liked him to do some work behind the scenes for us - believe that's what he'd be very good at.

Anyway, Louis should go on and enjoy his retirement now and get away from our crazy club.
I agree with every word. It's really such a shame. I genuinely liked him as the manager, but some suicidal transfer decisions and his loyalty to Rooney has ultimately cost him IMO

I thought it was bizarre too. We want to be in a situation where we are having so many chances that we can afford to miss one or two and not be punished. Balancing the outcome of a game on one chance is madness.

Sometimes you have to be honest and assess yourself and I think LVG just did this. His tone has certainly changed. When I listened to his post match interview he didn't sound like the confident van Gaal we all know.
He stabilised the ship last year after the Moyes era and got us back into the top 4 again. Now however I think he has gone as far as he can, he is no longer the Manager he once was when he was managing Ajax or Barcelona and he may have realised this now.

Have you not seen the countless times he has thrown a player under the bus in his post match pressers?

I've seen him honestly assess players performances, as he is with everything he is asked. I've also seen he doesn't praise players as much as he should but when has he thrown anybody under the bus rather than called it as it is?

He is a class man and he has conducted himself very well. Shame it hasn't worked out and he has to accept some blame but he has had a great career overall and will be remembered as one of the influential managers.

People are talking as if he is already sacked. As it stands he is still the current manager. Nobody really knows whats going to happen.

He will go manage AC milan & im sure we will see some benefit of his time here as we did at other clubs.

Leaving Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern, United & AC milan with some quality advice will put him down as one of the best managers ever.

FFS really clutching at straws here aren't you?

There's actually some really sad quotes in there.

I remember his end of season speech around 6 months ago. At that time I really thought things would kick on this year but they don't seem to have done that at all. I will never hold anything against LvG and I would love for him to turn this around and for us to challenge again. However I don't see this happening at all and we should not take the risk. He sounds like a defeated man, which really is sad.

The game has been kind to us in Mou becoming available. We've made the mistake of not appointing him once already, I just pray lightning doesn't strike twice.

The way he talked about McNair immediately after a match just a couple of weeks back. There have been other such instances.
He was right about McNair. He is just very honest, sometimes brutally so but I'd say that overall plenty of players appreciate that. And he has shown just now that he can be honest about himself.

I completely agree with this he has always been honset and polite when communicating with journalists and fans.

Oh of course he is but it will need miracle for him to stay much longer. At the very max, he will be gone in summer if he somehow survives.

I genuinely feel sorry for him, but if I do a bad job at work, I get fired. It's the way things work and he's not doing a good job. I just hope when we do sack him we do it professionally and get Mourinho in. No fecking about this time especially with reports that Pep is City bound.

I would still have liked him to do some work behind the scenes for us - believe that's what he'd be very good at.

I think he would be great as a youth team director. Seems to have an eye for young players and very good as spotting which ones just are not up to the level. Many criticised some of our young prospects he let go at the time Welbeck etc but he has been proved right mostly. What we are left with now seems like a very good young team.

Also think if the English FA let him run rule over youth football and how players are trained from very young ages in a few years they would see huge changes in the level of talent coming through.

Want him gone, but that quote makes me feel really bad for Louis. He deserved a proper swansong at the highest level, guess it just wasn't meant to be. Never a good sight to see a celebrated manager go out the back door, especially one who's up there in age. Looks like he could use a hug too. :(

Yeah agreed. It's a pity really because we are desperate for some direction and structure with our youth set up. I can't see anyone else out there that would do as good a job as him. Giggs has no intelligence for the kind of organisation that would need - it's a huge job. Plus Giggs would have all his mates in for jobs.
Mourinho and others are short term managers, or not capable of a huge restructure. It's a damn shame really.

Would hate to see him being sacked, have backed him from the start. Worked wonders for us at the WC and i really thought he would be in instant hit from the get go. At the end i want to see Manchester United in the best possible situation. and t

He sounds like a man who is starting to doubt himself.

He also sounds like he's run out of ideas.

There comes a time for a manager when things are moving on and you can't keep up. This looks like it for Louis.

Will always prefer him to Moyes. LVG is a proud man, Moyes is smug. There's a difference.
His biggest mistake was putting his faith in Wayne Rooney. That decision has killed him.

Don't worry, his wife will give him a big hug:(
Needs to leave this set up though - it's too toxic and not good for the old guy...:(

Agreed with every word here.

Stan Collymore made the point that he won the CL 20 years ago. We often forget that and assume it was more recent. The landscape of football has changed majorly since then. He unfortunately hasn't.

He almost reached the WC final if it werent for the shootout. Our squad was not good enough for that semi final result. He was always known as a manager who can maximise the potential of the team.

Being honest with players is one thing but to point out mistakes by them in the presser and saying that is the reason we lost or did not do well cannot be appreciated by anyone.

The thing is he was so proud of being Manchester United manager so he will be gutted. But it just hasn't worked out. I can't help it, I'm a big old softie, so feel bad about the whole thing:(

Nobody asks him in the presser to assess individual performances. He can do that within the confines of the dressing room. If he was so brutally honest, why has he not yet accepted his stupidity to trim the squad to the extent he did?
