Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

Interesting that be pointed out that the commericial goals of the club aren't always in line with the football goals.

I wonder if he isn't entirely happy with the pre-season setup.
Well it isnt ideal, arrive at the club only to fly thousands of miles away to play in a glorified friendly tournament.

This is a good thing. At least now we can stay away from the transfer forum for 4 weeks then have a frantic last week of August! Nothing beats a class deadline day signing!
You think you can stay away from the transfer forum? muhahahahhahaha! It will call you soon. You will be unable to resist the temptation of the Transfer forum.

He seemed to dodge the Rooney experience thing switching over to Carrick, either he just didn't want to talk about him (compare that to Moyes  ) or he's not a huge fan of him personally, with Van Gaal specifying you need experience as a human being. We'll see I guess.

So all these rumours that have been flying around in the past few weeks are nonsense if he wants to evaluate the squad first.

If Van Gaal doesn't make the top 4 this season he's going to be murdered by the press for doing a Moyes. If we do get in the top 4 he'll be a genius and Moyes will look like the job was too big for him, again.

I'm happy that he's going to evaluate the squad before we make any signings. Firstly, for my own sanity, it means I can enjoy the pre-season without getting whipped up into a transfer frenzy. Secondly, we may have some very promising youngsters that wouldn't have gotten a chance before and now will.

To be honest though, unless Van Gaal makes his mind up quickly about his players it may be another summer of regret. I just hope that the difference this time around is that LvG is up to the job and Moyes simply wasn't.
A new manager saying he first wants to evaluate his squad is as generic as it gets. His mind will already be made up about most of the comings and goings.

He's a pure destroyer, and they're only ever worth it when they're one of the best in the world at it, which De Jong isn't by any stretch of the imagination. Mascherano, sure. De Jong, no thanks. Swapping our second best central midfielder for a clueless thug would be a terrible idea.

De Jong - - - Fellaini

He seems like the complete opposite of Moyes.

Glad he took a little jab at the corporate agenda, I'm sure he's not keen on these friendlies we are going to play while we are out of the CL.

My favourite comments were his take on experience, the English players who now work for Sky in particular have banged on about keeping older players for their experience for years and I think partly because their buddies are still hooked into big clubs getting fat contracts, sometimes experience just means old.

So I'm supposed to put on a Scouse accent whenever I mention Rooney's name?

What you do is up to you, mate. But that's the correct pronunciation in Spanish. Not a particular Spanish accent... the Spanish language.

Worth pointing out, though, that unless he pronounced the V and a B, he's being inconsistent. You should either pronounce it in English-language phonetic - Valensia - or in proper Spanish - Balenthia. Not half and half.

I doubt the Carrick injury is serious. He would have said so if it was. He'll probably miss the tour. If he's going to miss the start of the season though, he needs to enter the market soon.

He said to journalists after that it was for "a long time", "much too long for me". It sounds very serious. Our cm problem was bad enough already. I don't see any way we don't get Vidal now, despite what Juve have said, without Carrick, we're missing serious quality. Could see us getting another 2 cms after that news (unless he promotes Powell, Pearson and Pereira and they rise to the challenge).

Honestly, the conference was good, but we can't really afford to wait another month before making more signings. The best will be gone, unfortunate as it is.

I think he was just more interested in getting his point about experience not being that important across. Rooney was just given as an example of an experienced player by the questioner.

I find the answer "3-4 weeks to asses the squad" much better than "you need 5 or 6 world class players to win the CL".

And just because he said this doesn't mean we will stop all transfer activity for the next 3-4 weeks, after all we have already bought 2 players and LvG didn't tell Woody to wait for those 2 until he has assesed the squad.

Is he talking about the place/club, or Tony V? If the former, he's right. If the latter, he's wrong - South Americans don't do the soft 'th' c like the Spanish do.

I thought that was Castillian only? Dunno what they speak in the basque region tho.

Nice to hear that straight away he's avoiding the mild inoffensive platitudes that Moyes spouted, that so often came over as submissive.

Already a neat little dig about commercial pressures, and making it clear that ability not experience is the main thing.

Cool.

This. They couldn't be much different in terms of personality.

I know Moyes would prob win a physical fight as he's 11 years younger but Louis gives off the illusion of strength.

But similar in the transfer market, we're leaving it last minute again.
It's mid July. What van Gaal said today doesn't mean we won't sign anyone in the next few weeks. What he said today about needing to see the current players is perfectly logical and it was when Moyes said it. Moyes just took too long to do it and didn't get anywhere near the performances out of the current players that he should have.

Few journo scum on Twitter saying the presser felt very intimidating. SAF like were the words used

Why are they scum? Because they're journalists?

You realise today wasn't a 'Van Gaal says hi to Rossi' event, don't you?

Hate it when people rag on the press as if they'd know feck all without them.

Well we have just bought Shaw and Herrara. I wouldn't take it literally what he said about the squad and transfers. I'm sure he will have identified targets and the players who will be leaving the team.

He's doing an interview on MUTV now for those who aren't aware.

To be honest, central midfield is such a pressing area now that there's no-one to assess in that area.

I think he means up front, where we have a tonne of players to get through.

Valencia is in Castillian-speaking Spain. I didn't see the very first post of this back-and-forth but I think we're talking about an English guy, so if he's going to go for a Spanish pronunciation that's the correct one.

(For interest, I don't know about Basque either but in Catalan it's true that they don't pronounce the soft 'th' c as they do in Castillian.)

Because many of them are just that, but not all of them thankfully.

The point of Van Gaal is that he will do everything he can do to make players better and make them play better. Any manager would say that, but he goes out looking for things a manager can do to contribute to the succes, not just the things managers generally do. Like having lunch together, but also on the football itself. That's why he doesn't think experience is that important, because if a player can learn from experience, he can also replace a lot of experience with his own knowledge. Instead of learnig it themselves by experiencing it, he teaches them as much as he can. So it's typical for him to see his youngsters play beyond their years.

That also means that he buys players to make the players he has play better. It's got to be a specific fit.

Louis calling it like it is: "It's not just the Theatre of Dreams but also the Dream of Louis Van Gaal."

The man's an instant charmer. No wonder he had the air-hostess kissing him up at Ajax!
