Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

feck me. 8 alerts.

You lot love picking on someone getting it wrong.

Sorry sorry. Ok they asked. I missed it.

Nice to hear that straight away he's avoiding the mild inoffensive platitudes that Moyes spouted, that so often came over as submissive.

Already a neat little dig about commercial pressures, and making it clear that ability not experience is the main thing.

Cool.

His passing and composure on the ball is miles behind carrick but a bit more mobile and a bit better at the dirty side of the holding cm role.

He's a pure destroyer, and they're only ever worth it when they're one of the best in the world at it, which De Jong isn't by any stretch of the imagination. Mascherano, sure. De Jong, no thanks. Swapping our second best central midfielder for a clueless thug would be a terrible idea.

Having a look at the players for a month before buying is going to be a bit of a highwire act. Get it wrong and we might have missed our chances on certain players. If he thinks the players are up to it and he's proven right then he'll be hailed as a genius.

I would not read too much into that comment or the press conference at large. He's hardly going to say he knows who is going to be sold. If someone of high quality is obtainable such as Vidal I am sure we would go for them.

"It's a big club. A big family. Can I meet their expectations?" Excellent.

He's also very aware of the commercial nature of the club. He knows the challenge. That's reassuring.
He's a great manager we all know that. But it is refreshing to know a bit more about the character. He's notorious of being arrogant but he's very very respectful for the club he's regarded as best in the world. He's also very very knowledgable about our club, history, family club and hopefully about the fans as well!!!! These are very important elements when he's helping us to more success. It's not just about a business. It's about football and tradition as well. Well done boss. I truly believe we are going to have a great season with him in charge. At least every week we will be looking forward to games and press conference. :)

He's promised to give his utmost best. And 1st is the challenge, not 4th. Just brilliant.

I didn't get what he meant about not being able to fulfil the needs of the club and sponsors at the same time.

The way i saw it - the aims of the club could be progressive over a couple of years. IE this year, develop a philosophy, finish 4th acquire a settled squad. Wheres on the other hand, sponsers aims are immediate and demand success, big players from the word go. So somtimes difficult to achieve both together

Just a guess

Most of these players being interviewed won't/shouldn't be playing on tour

Surely we didn't expect any real news to come out of this presser. Not this time, at least. The job at hand was to reassure United supporters that the club is now in safe hands and that his ambition is to win the league trophy back.

Louis clearly stated 1st, not 4th.

So all these rumours that have been flying around in the past few weeks are nonsense if he wants to evaluate the squad first.

If Van Gaal doesn't make the top 4 this season he's going to be murdered by the press for doing a Moyes. If we do get in the top 4 he'll be a genius and Moyes will look like the job was too big for him, again.

I'm happy that he's going to evaluate the squad before we make any signings. Firstly, for my own sanity, it means I can enjoy the pre-season without getting whipped up into a transfer frenzy. Secondly, we may have some very promising youngsters that wouldn't have gotten a chance before and now will.

To be honest though, unless Van Gaal makes his mind up quickly about his players it may be another summer of regret. I just hope that the difference this time around is that LvG is up to the job and Moyes simply wasn't.

I thought best was the part when he told that the spanish league was the best when he was there - the Bundesliga was best when he was there - maybe now the EPL gets the best league...

That was so much van Gaal... :D

He's only getting over his jet lag and now he's heading off to the states for a few useless matches for no reason other than to appease sponsors.

But thats the nature of the club. It needs to be the judith Chalmers of European Football. Hence why we get the largest sponsorship contracts. Same last season when we are in Aus or wherever and the farce that was Woodward leaving in a hurry for no reason whatsoever!

It can be because players are tied to sponsors and shirts need to be sold etc (commercial side), and then his hands might be tied if he is not pleased with certain players who can bring revenue to the club (rather than being kept for footballing reasons)?

Interesting that be pointed out that the commericial goals of the club aren't always in line with the football goals.

I wonder if he isn't entirely happy with the pre-season setup.

He also said he was given a list of players that some of he gave his ok to buy. Who says we are not in for some more of that list? Looks like he was going to go for his own players after assessing the squad though.

No one has a problem with the logic but our faith will wane if in that time our competitors buy our muppet targets! So basically Herrera and Shaw were not his targets. So the reason Sanchez, Fabregas and Kroos were not followed could be because he isnt going to buy anyone off his own back until he's assessed the squad.....nothing to do with them not being right for us maybe!

Is he talking about the place/club, or Tony V? If the former, he's right. If the latter, he's wrong - South Americans don't do the soft 'th' c like the Spanish do.
So I'm supposed to put on a Scouse accent whenever I mention Rooney's name?
