Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

They didn't even ask him about his thoughts on the captaincy.
They did. He said anyone in the squad is a candidate, he'll need time to make a decision, and that there is no point making a quick decision as it wouldn't be good.

If he is anything Fergie, I expect a signing in 1 week rather than 4. Why would he tell these idiots when he is going to sign?

Good press conference. He looked in total control, bit like Fergie.

Hopefully we actually sign some players before the season starts. 3-4 weeks to assess squad is fine but players like Ando, Young, Bebe need to be sold and not further analysed.

Like he's going to say what he thinks about those he has already said can leave.

Loved his answer about experienced players, that is the exact philosophy a Man Utd manager should have.

Contracts, reputation, player power mean feck all now. It's all about if your good enough for the job with LVG. I love the sound of that. It'll drive the players to work harder to play knowing nobody is guaranteed a starting place.

What a contrast between him and Moyes. I'm not a Moyes-basher, he was an honest man and while not right for United i don't hold anything against him. But for him to come out and say about challenging for the title (seems ambitious and unlikely, but would love to see it) he just feels so positive which is going to give everyone a massive boost, which might already up some of the poor form we saw last season. Also glad to hear he's going to be giving the fringe players a chance.

It sounded like he wouldn't want to buy anyone until he's fully assessed the squad. So probably no more signings until after the USA tour.

He was given a list of players though and it looks like he gave his yes to some of them. Might still be after others that were on that list. He won't go for his own targets without assessing the squad though.
That's at least the way I understood it.

De Jong just screams out to me. I'd take him for Carrick.
Yep, the fact he said he'd like to evaluate the players and if they could fit his system before signing any players would suggest to me he'd be interested in tried and tested players like de Jong.

Btw, There were like 4 relevant or good questions.

Rest was all rubbish generic stuff.

Reminded me of the shit questions they had about in Moyes presser. All Rooney Rooney Rooney.

I was a bit confused about so much talk about the sponsors from LVG. Hopefully it was just due to language.

Ander Herrera saying we're doing a lot of work with the ball. Satisfying to hear that!

Edit: He speaks excellent English for a Spaniard!

Herrera "every day we have the ball and every day we pass the ball"

Now that is a sentence that makes me happy

Having a look at the players for a month before buying is going to be a bit of a highwire act. Get it wrong and we might have missed our chances on certain players. If he thinks the players are up to it and he's proven right then he'll be hailed as a genius.

I didn't get what he meant about not being able to fulfil the needs of the club and sponsors at the same time.
