Louis Van Gaal - First press conference 17/07/14 14:45 BST

They basically asked two good questions.

The last one and the one with philosophies at Ajax, Barcelona etc one.

I know it's awful that Carrick apparently has an extremely long injury but I'll be honest, a part of me thought "well f*ck, we'll definitely sign ourselves a midfielder now!"

I took his last answer to mean that he has no respect for reputations, and that the strength of a player's personality is what defines 'experience' to him. So it matters not that you're 20 or 30, it's about your character.

This would suggest Rooney has no stature beyond anyone else for him.

Good press conference. He looked in total control, bit like Fergie.

Hopefully we actually sign some players before the season starts. 3-4 weeks to assess squad is fine but players like Ando, Young, Bebe need to be sold and not further analysed.

Good start. Think it's obvious we'll see no more signings for a good while yet. The Kids will love that about Seedorf

Not many surprises there. It's a shame is English is a bit rusty and he can't find the words to be more specific about is his philosopy and way of working.

Ok, if Carrick is indeed injured for a long time then i expect a midfield signing soon.

Despite the poor answers, he handled it very well.

So much difference from Moyes' a year ago

I want to look at the present players for 3-4 weeks, then i buy a player.

We're going to sign another midfielder?
Well feck me sideways and tickle my daisy, this day just gets better and better.

Feck, we NEED a central midfielder now.

To summarise: 1 - he’s not Moyes 2 - he’s supremely self-confident 3 - he wants to assess players 4 - he’s a winner 5 - Carrick injured

It sounded like he wouldn't want to buy anyone until he's fully assessed the squad. So probably no more signings until after the USA tour.

"For me the challenge isnt to finish in the top 4, I want to finish 1st" (paraphrased).

Love the man already.

Basically Van Gaal saying we are some huge bloated corporate juggernaut

He's not far off, success off the pitch means feck all if it doesn't translate to success on it.

I'm not satisfied with a good balance sheet ahead of a good team sheet.

Hopefully he puts a stop to the plans for mid season trips to the middle east to increase our brand value or whatever nonsense the suits come up with.

Michael Carrick being injured for a "long time" almost guarantees a central midfielder coming in.. surely?

What's important for me is whether he will try to do his best and make it hard for teams, Newcastle for example?

Rooney is an overgrown baby. Van Gaal wants him out. The sponsors won't let him sell Rooney.
TRUTH

Please be joking.

He said absolutely nothing specific about Rooney. He simply answered the very tired 'how important are experienced players to you?' with, in effect 'Not the be all and end all, because sometimes a youngster can be as 'experienced' in footballing terms as any older player.'

Which is something this forum badly needs to hear sometimes. Caftards are so obsessed with experience they regularly call for us to keep hold of expensive senior players who aren't good enough to actually play any more 'just to have his experience around the dressing room.' Which is ridiculous.

This is a good thing. At least now we can stay away from the transfer forum for 4 weeks then have a frantic last week of August! Nothing beats a class deadline day signing!

Oh God, does this mean more Fellaini this season???

yea he was playing with the people asking the questions. Hes well able to handle them

 When he was talking about the Dutch journalist laughing, the way he looked I half expected him to get up and go and knock him out!

David May hates Moyes. He's trying his best not to make it too obvious in case he gets axed by MUTV again.

big points for me:

1, probably not going to be no signings till he has assessed the squad, so any further business will be done in the final few weeks of the window.

2, herrera and shaw wern't his choice but he likes them.

3, He likes carrick.

3, Butts jobs safe, not so much neville.

4, he going to concentrate on the first team in the next few years.

5, he gives an excellent press conference.

Loved his answer about experienced players, that is the exact philosophy a Man Utd manager should have.

He's always had emphasis on youth. This isn't some sort of dig at Rooney, calm down.

It just shows how the journalist's wording of questions can influence people's reactions to the answer.

Van Gaal didn't even mention Rooney, but because the journo slipped his name in at the end, the idiots lap it up and take his comments as some sort of slight on Rooney.
