Los Angeles Fires 2025

What does a guy like Trump say about climate change in the face of this? Is he putting it on ethnic minorities yet?

Air is pretty nasty here in downtown LA. The fires are in the hills to the west and north, near the ocean. It's an area that is basically very hilly, lots of brush and some trees, and some housing dispersed there. Although it is close to the ocean, it's pretty dry over there.

The rightwing are basically blaming this on DEI and "wokeness." They're doing it by partially citing the budget cuts to the fire department. Which the last part is true and why the mayor should have to answer for her being spineless. However, the rightwingers are conveniently ignoring the fact that they exaggerated crime, putting pressure on the weak mayor to beef up the police budget at the expense of fire department and other areas. Strange how the right wingers have not made any mention of where the budget increases/decreases for the city were allocated to, namely the police.

The democrats are also weak in their response to this disinformation campaign.

I grew up in LA and there were fires all the time, but nothing like this. This has to be the worst fire disaster in American history.

Depends on what your definition of worst is. Acre size? Property damage? Deaths?

Definitely not in terms of deaths. That's still in the Camp Fire, which happened about 90 minutes north of where I live now. But in terms of property damage, these 5 fires together for sure. In today's dollars, the 1906 San Francisco fire caused $9 billion in property damage, but wiped out about half of the city. These fires together will probably climb over $100 billion in property damage.

Almost all of Pacific Palisades is gone. The Rose Bowl should be safe, but if the Rose Bowl goes the emotional impact on Southern Californians will be beyond belief. But there's a golf course and gigantic grass parking lot around the Rose Bowl and it should have enough of a break between it and fires raging around it.

A point of clarification , the budget for Fire was 2% lower because LA was still negotiating with LAFD, something Fox keeps failing to report. they set aside additional money and finished that negotiation outside the normal budget one. While $17M initially was “cut”, the department actually received $50M more, about a 5% increase. The misinformation is being spread by the right wing owner of the LA Times.

Just knock three times and we’ll let you in the side gate. Remember: we want free education, health care, gender equality, and a Raveonettes record in every home.
Just remember that, as a Danish territory, you are obligated to receive hordes of German tourists each summer who will dig giant meters-deep holes in your beaches. And no, they usually don't fill them back up before they leave. Just as a heads-up, so you can't say nobody told you beforehand.

9 billion dollars in 1906 is 261 billion dollars in todays money. So it will need to surpass that

That 9 billion was already adjusted to today's money:
In today's dollars, the 1906 San Francisco fire caused $9 billion in property damage,
The cost back then was estimated at around 350 million.

Man, this really changes things. I think we’re going to have to insist on Borgen on DVD as well as the Raveonettes album.

What I checked earlier when I was on my laptop was that the losses in 1906 were 8.9B in today’s dollars, not 1906 dollars. But it’s worth a second look.

Never read the comments!

I did!, it was on the local news that fkrs in Idaho (next state over) are up in arms over their firefighters going down to help the efforts. Complaining about who's paying them and what if there's a fire there.

Fkn idaho, horrible cvnts.

With huge bush fires more 4 on firefighters will only go so far. We have a massive volunteer rural fire brigade operation many times the size of the actual fire service which helps hugely as do fire fighting helicopters and planes. Howevere, in the end big fires can be more or less uncontrollable. One thing I heard is that back burning/controlled burns, to minimise the fuel load on the ground, isn't a thing in the US. This is seen as essential here and much of it is done in winter by the Rural Fire Brigades. Given that CA is probably stuck with lots of eucalypts I think this might be something to look at when the emergency has passed.

What’s a meter?
