Los Angeles Fires 2025

Certainly, and with the prevailing winds in the past and coming days the area isn't even getting moist morning mist from the sea. At least the winds should ease up tomorrow according to predictions, before getting slightly stronger over the weekend again, but not as strong as they've been recently.
Winds are miserable across the region. We shut down construction just across the state line in Yuma and will have to do so again tomorrow. Our wildfire was minor thankfully; not that there’s much to burn…

There's other factors too. Eucalyptus trees are non-native trees imported into California 100+ years ago. They spread like weeds and they are matchsticks, one of the most flammable trees that exist. There were Eucalyptus in Eaton and Malibu canyons. Of course these fires likely would have start even if there were no Eucalpytus but they do contribute because a lot of California native trees are far more fire resistant than Eucalpytus.
Wasn't the wisest choice of tree to bring in from Australia given

Terrifying seeing stuff like this. Literally nothing can be done, except a little here and there. You just have to evacuate and pray Mother Nature relents. I couldn’t imagine living in places where natural disasters are a genuine risk.

The idiot I am called my friend in San Diego (2 hrs from Long Beach) to check on him regarding the fires no where near him

Also, may be worth investing in the Midwest (no natural disasters apart from a shit ton of snow)
Even that isnt really true (anymore). At least here in Detroit I remember snow being on the ground for 3 months straight. Can't remember the last time we had snow last more than 2-3 days. We barely got anything with this latest storm paralyzing things south of us.

And oh yeah we also have tons of water.

Really horrific to see everything happening in CA.

The Eaton Canyon Fire has completely wiped out Altadena, where a bunch of my friends live(d). All homes burned to the ground. Talked with two friends today who lost everything but their lives.

Same with Sierra Madre, where I know 6 families who lost their homes. Palisades is gone.

We are currently under an evacuation warning, which is down from an order. So we are packed up and checking the fire alerts. No power all last night until noon today.

It’s quite a thing to select belongings knowing anything you don’t put in your car might be reduced to ash.

Dude this is heartbreaking. Thoughts are with you.

The winds were fecking ridiculous last night. 100 mph gusts that literally tore my neighbors’ roof off. Sounded like the house was being battered to pieces. Couldn’t sleep until about 9 am. Winds have died down a lot, thank feck.

I appreciate that.

I feel for the people in the Palisades who packed their cars early and then were forced to abandon their cars last. Police blocked the exit roads so fire crews could get through, then told everyone to get out of their cars and run for it. Then a bulldozer came along and smashed all the cars out of the way, it’s like adding insult to injury.

This honestly sounds like an apocalypse movie. How awful for those poor people.

This is awful. Hopefully the weather give s break to the firefighters. I had been there directly and indirectly and is heartbreaking to see family and friends losing their house and belongings due to the fire

Yes. It was a very highly desirable area to live. it’s not like Topanga or Kanan Dume or places that look like tinderboxes ready to blow. These winds were unreal. Fire aircraft were grounded and reservoirs were empty when fire crews arrived.

Yeah, that's the idea. Hoping it doesn't spread any further, but if it does, I'm out.
Fingers crossed that it won't hit your house but it's so terrifyingly unpredictable (as to which direction it goes next).

Was watching that fire spread in the news at 6pm. I had to turn it off it was so depressing. I hope the fire fighters can protect the homes and people there. Too many lost already.
I'm in South OC and the winds have really died down here. Hoping it's similar in LA.

They have died down significantly all over LA county from near Hurricane levels in some places yesterday to about 20-30mph today. If this thing can be contained, winds should be back to normal on Friday.

The roads out are completely jammed, FYI. La Brea, Highland, basically all of Hollywood is gridlocked.

Sadly these firestorms create their own weather systems. We see it a lot in Australia when they trip through and it’s why it’s so dangerous.

I remember those poor souls fleeing the Australian fires several years ago, when the flames were like 400 feet tall and it caught up to hundreds in their cars on the highway. Truly awful.

I assume that was Black Saturday in 2009. 179 people died including 27 in cars, mostly due to evacuating too late. We had got used to staying and defending our houses and the fires that year were so severe that this tactic didn't work well in the worst areas.

Yeah, my friend had just moved back to the states after living there for 20 years, then that happened. It still haunts me.

I'm so sorry for our American friends here who are caught up in this terrible disaster. It's truly awful to see firefighters unable to do anything but watch. My heart goes out to people who have lost their homes and will have to start again.

I know, I see a massive house on fire and a lone fireman with a hose. It just looks so futile.

Guessing because of the mass amounts of smoke they can't provide air support?

I wish there was a way to make these fires only target the houses of the rich and famous (when they arent home)

Good thing my goal is to be rich and infamous.

Jokes aside, fire doesn't care. I'm sure rich people will have been affected, but the poorest will feel the effects longest.

They definitely will and it winds me up seeing them crying about their mansions whilst so many regular people will be made homeless and ruined

Weather was too rough for a good bit. Can't send them up in 30-50kts of wind. Now with the winds dying down they can restart operations.

Absolutely devastating - must be absolutely terrifying and shattering for people involved. Hope anyone here that is based in the area/has loved ones there is safe.

Will LA recover from this? Hard to see insurance companies/businesses returning like they were before this. Feels like a hugely symbolic and monumental moment in American history.

I don't know a huge amount about such things but as Biden has declared an emergency and opened up federal funds I assume LA will be helped back to its feet?

The insurance implications of this will be catastrophic too unless they receive some assistance which is probably doubtful. I work in insurance for a construction company and even if we suffer a broken leg on one of our sites it affects the premium the following year so I dread to think what this will do.

A lot needs to change when the city is rebuilt to stop things like this happening again, or rather stop them spreading so quickly.

But overall it's just horrific, I can't believe what I'm seeing and I pray that things get better soon although the damage is already done :(
