Los Angeles Fires 2025

They ended up getting funding because people in Trumps camp showed him that the parts of California that were on fire were actually republican areas. It's sickening that we elected him again.
How did someone so petty, and cheap, and vulgar, and uncaring, and anti-intellectual, and venal convince so many people to vote for him? What is wrong with the red states? It’s like they were choosing the form of the Destroyer. I don’t want to watch the rest of this season of American Dumpster Fire.

I wish!

But it is actually true, failure to keep my feet moisturized enough caused a the skin to split under a callous and resulted in gangrene and a toe amputation

Let it be a warning, especially folks who have diabetes, lube your feet 'cos it might feck your feet up if you don't, and in a sidenote to the Heathcare thread, it cost my insurance company in the region of $250K so was almost worth it!
This made me feel a bit queasy. Thanks!

Holly feck man! I leave the puns there. Oh well, who needs toes

It was nearly 10 years ago, with diabetes you can get neuropathy, which I have, and basically you can't feel much, by the time you realise something might be wrong it's often too late, that was the case with me, had no pain, even when they cut it off, indeed the worst bit was the super strong IV antibiotics, 2 different ones at the same time for a week, didn't half mess up my guts for weeks!

I lost my pinky toe, but toes are way more important than you'd think, even just the loss of a tiny toe has screwed up my balance big time, been wobbly ever since.

I was lucky, another day or two and I'd have probably lost most of my foot, earlier this year I had a scare, I managed to get a small cut on the same foot, I was treating it but iy went bad pretty much overnight, that earned me 3 nights in the hospital and the bloody antibiotics again

I can joke about it now (when my mrs isn't around) but it's a serious issue and most people who are vulnerable to it don't really understand the risks

I just kept the posterior low key humour because you still played game. But I know how serious it is. An acquaintance of mine didn't take care of his diabetes (mental distressed that didn't want to take care of himself) and suffered amputations on toes and later half leg and then he took more serious.

And yes, toes are important. I am glad that you can take importance on the matter. I know that it would affect me. Is long overdue that a treatment that puts diabetes in a more manageable stage is discovered

I learned my lesson, still find it hard food wise 'cos I like the stuff I shouldn't have a loit of and hate most of the stuff I can, managed to cut out sugar in my coffee which I never thought I'd manage and no soda, not even the diet stuff and cut back on the milk

I have the right drugs now as well, a lot of them just made me sick so it took a few years to find the ones that didn't, was even given that weight loss onvr even though I'm not much overweight, that lasted 2 shots, made me sicker than a dogs breakfast!

But everything is awesome?

Was reading an article on the debate of the rich using private firefighting companies to save their property or attempt too. I mean as long as they dont get in the way of public officials or do anything illegal I don't see why it's bad. Apparently they are private businesses like hiring private security I get it rubs people the wrong way when regular people are struggling or waiting for public help.

“Do you know the kind of artwork most of these people have? The houses are like museums,” said one talent agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Indeed, locals like former NBCUniversal executive Ron Meyer and Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio have extensive and irreplaceable collections. Pieces by Murakami, Salvador Dali and Basquiat are in Leo’s possession.

Holter, based in Central California, cautioned against judgment for homeowners with abundant resources.

“Our service is cost-effective compared to public entities,” Holter said, noting that Los Angeles uses union firefighters. While his company might charge between $4,000-$5,000 per day for a small fleet for a client, a municipality will run closer to $20,000 for workers, trucks, overtime and backfill workers.

Presumably because they are using the same water supply (unless they’re trucking their own water tanks?) and therefore risking dropping the water pressure, which will feck the other fire teams, and they’re for sure not coordinating with whatever command structure is in place.

What part of town are you located in ?

They lifted the evacuation warning tonight, so maybe we’re through the worst of it. Thanks though for the concern. Just got an update that 14 more of my wife’s coworkers lost their homes.

I've been tracking things on Watch Duty. Seems like things are slowly getting under control again.

La Canada Flintridge, but a lot of LA people have never heard of it.

This is Altadena. One friend of mine lived two blocks up from the white box, another to the right of that where the dots are almost white. The fire knocked this city out in about 20 minutes. From the moment someone saw a tower sparking in Eaton Canyon to when their home was fully engulfed was less than 20 minutes. Unreal. There are now 30,000 people with nowhere to go.

And containment is still less than 10%.

Getting these short messages from relatives (they are old folks):

Encino is completely evacuated, including us. I am in complete disbelief.
Escaping from the fire late at night , confused , luckily found a hotel.

Question for LA based Caftards - how bad is the situation in Encino?

The amount of water a pump arrives with is just about enough to protect a team to get into a property and extract anyone from inside.

It's not enough to do any serious or prolonged fire fighting so they will need to hook upto the water supply.

The danger here with private companies is they will have potentially newer equipment and extract at higher pressures, reducing the water supply to others fighting the fire.

At major incidents the management of water pressure across multiple pumps is a complicated business and having a private company, incentivised to protect a particular property, could make the situation far worse.

We don't really want to go back to the original fire service model of only certain houses being protected because the owners had purchased fire insurance.

The fact these companies actively argue that their advantage is that the people risking their lives in their name aren't unionized says all anyone needs to know about them.

The fire is moving towards Encino among other places.

You can track the Palisades fire here. It is currently 11% contained.

https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/1/7/palisades-fire

Encino is the far northeast part of colored areas of the Palisades fire on the map.

Based on the color chart, a large swath of Encino already appears to be under mandatory evacuation.

Encino is not completely evacuated. The parts of Encino highest up on the hill are under mandatory evacuation and south of Ventura Blvd are under warning. I live in the valley and we're hearing the firefighters are trying to prevent it from crossing Mulholland which is a street that goes along the top of the hills separating Hollywood/Westside from the Valley.

For everyone not familiar with LA here is the area relevant:

What are the different colours? Orange for fire, red for evacuated, yellow to evacuate?

I’m guessing the owners were in a panic and misguidedly thought the cage might protect it, as opposed to allowing it to run free. Not the best choice imo.
Could it be a trap cage? Horrible timing if so.

“Like a good neighbour, State Farm is there”

feck insurance companies.
People are reaching the boiling point. One health insurance company exec’s death is not going to slake this rage. The way the Republicans are already politicizing this is infuriating. Some Ohio congress asshole said on Fox that federal disaster relief funds should be withheld from California under the guise of forest management practices (but a lot of those forest are federally owned). Trump blamed Newsom, made up lies about refusing to allow water to be used, lied about Mayor Bass cutting LAFD funding (they actually got a $50 million increase), and claimed that DEI is to blame instead of the driest 6 months in the last 150 years coupled with hurricane force winds. A lot of motherfeckers are going to face mob justice at this rate, and I hope I’m on the eventual jury (not guilty).

In completely unsurprising fashion, James Woods has said this:
This fire is not from ‘climate change,’ you ignorant a-shole,” he wrote in a reply on X. “It’s because liberal idiots like you elect liberal idiots like Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass.”
And to that I say, motherfeck him. He’s a complete fecking wilfully ignorant thundercnut. I’m sorry, but I will never, ever have sympathy for disgusting filth like him who say shit like this.

James Woods is an abhorrent human being. The world would be a better place without him in it. It's a shame he wasn't trapped inside his home.

Thanks guys. The latest prognosis does not look good.
