London 2012 - Track & Field/Athletics

I don't think you can really describe a sprinter as a genius

Bolt is lucky enough to be about 6 inches taller than all the other guys. I think they all are blessed with prodigious sporting talent and they must work very hard on their fitness all the time, but having very long legs must help in a short sprint!

Was watching a program the other day "how to beat bolt" or something. Said he takes about 40 strides whilst everyone else needs between 45-47.

Gives testiment to guys who are nearlly as fast, who are much shorter than him.

He's not built for the 100m, he's actually a 200m athelete.

Yep. He is slow from the start compared to most 100m sprinters. He is just so insanely gifted he can reach top speed in time and that top speed blows everyone away.

In the 200m he is even more dominant.

I'm just gutted Gatlin got a medal. To be a two-time drug cheat and still be able to compete is damaging for the sport.

I disagree. He served four years - that's a very long time.

Cyclists get banned for what, two years?

To be able to come back after four years, almost certainly running clean and win bronze in a field that has improved immensely since he was away is a feat.

In a way, it shows how ridiculous it is for sprinters to dope themselves. That a 30-year-old Gatlin can come back after four years and finish 3rd in the Olympics in such a strong field is just proof that it's not necessary in the first place.

Actually, this might be worth a new topic...

Bolt's the first tall sprinter to match the shorter guys over 30m. Previously the likes of Carl Lewis wouldn't hit the front of the race until 70m or so. It all came together for Bolt in Berlin where he led the field after just 20m.

I'm sure he'd love to the annoying queen. Drugs. I just hope Bolt & co are clean otherwise it'll kill athletics all over again.

Interesting that Gatlin is running the same times as when he was on drugs, either they didn't make much difference or he and others aren't getting detected this time. Nothing would deflate the Olympics bubble quicker than a positive for one of the top athletes.

Sorry, but to cheat once is something you could perhaps put down to temptation or stupidity. To cheat again after serving your first ban is basically taking the piss out of the sport. Seeing that he's running very similar times now, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still cheating.

Agree.

Btw, when does this Bolt chap actually race for medals in this Olympics? I've heard so much about him. Never seen him in action and not hearing much about him so far in London 2012.

:confused:He won the 100m last night amol...

200m qualification starts today, I think.

lol wut? He set a new Olympic record at the 100m last night. The most prestigious event of the olympics.

He's running the 200m final on thursday. Expect another Olympic record.

The mercury didn't help.

Speaking of which, anyone else notice how Freddie-like Ryan Bailey is?

Wow you are missing something, I stayed awake till 2:30 AM just to see him run for 10 seconds.

Apart from being the wrong build & race, and having completely different hair and facial features, I can see it.

An Algerian athlete is facing disqualification [for not trying] from the 1,500m after seemingly jogging round and then dropping out of 800m race just now.

ATHLETICS - Algerian runner thrown out
Drama in the athletics heats this morning where Algerian 1500m medal contender Taoufik Makhloufi has been thrown out of the Olympics for not trying in his 800 heat.

Makhloufi, who won his 1500m semi-final in style, had been forced to run in the two lap race after his team failed to withdraw him from it by Sunday's deadline.

The 24-year-old lined up at the start of heat five but was already well behind the field at the start of the back straight before stopping running completely another 100m into the race and wandering back across the infield past the pole vault area.

"The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events in the competition," read an IAAF statement.

That's harsh, he's clearly saving himself for the 1500m. He should have just feigned a muscle strain and limped off. He could have continued in the 1500m with a taped up leg and nobody would have suspected a thing.

Why did he go for the 800m in the first place? In any event what he did was too brazen to be ignored.

From the quote that Colin posted, it would seem his federation left it too late to withdraw him. I've not seen it yet, was it incredibly blatant?

Must have been very late India time.

I was listening to Katherine Merry report on it after the fact [not enough screens for all of this sport lol], however apparently he stopped somewhere along the abck straight and proceeded to clap the others round.

I think he was trying to make a point as much as anything else.

At the start he looked like he was going to at least give it a go, then realised he wasn't going to win, so dropped right back, and slowed down to a walk.

There is an interview with Thomas Wilhelmi. He is the physiotherapist at Bayern Munich - Bolt uses the Bayern doctor and works on their training facility with the Bayern physiotherapist when he is in Munich since about 2 years. He tells that Ribery and Robben would win the first 10 metres against Bolt with a standing start...

(just for a comparison with footballer's from somebody who is training with both)
